Before: Beautiful brunette Holmes nearly a decade (9 yrs, 10 mos) older than 22 y/o Swanepoel; almost as tall (1 in.); and with nearly 50 fights more on her resume. All in all, daunting obstacles for the inexperienced young blonde. Still, there's reason for cautious optimism: Swanepoel was discovered by one of the women who took her countrywoman Charlize Theron to international fame and fortune and she's being trained by the same trainer as well as by Theron and Charlize's personal trainer, the legendary Catherine 'Cat' Bell. Other things to brighten Candice Swanepoel's outlook are: she won her last fight against another tall, rangy, brunette Angie Harmon. Then too, Holmes has had a losing record since 2007 and while Holmes packs a wallop, her recent record indicates when she has been able to stop an opponent, it's been with a sustained beating rather than a single, punch. The young, lithe, limber, Swanepoel hopes she can use her leggy mobility to avoid trouble while her longer reach punishes Holmes as she stays away from Holmes' body attack.
"The girl just looks fragile," Katie says, her shoulders turning as she preens and poses at the podium. "Sure she beat someone; someone who used to be pretty good matter of fact. And I give her full credit. But WHO did she beat? I mean, Harmon? She's even more fragile than Swanepoel - who may be thin, but she's 'model thin' - you know, sorta healthy looking with no meat on her bones. I'm going to take care that I don't break her while I'm toying with her."
Candice chipper, perky and up-beat; perfectly coiffed golden hair high-lited, pouffed and teased to a fair-thee-well for her first pre-fight press conference as a fighter on a 'win streak' - however short. "I am soooo excited to be getting into the same ring with Katie Holmes," Swannie gushes, laying on the faux excitement a bit thick. "I remember growing up in Natal, South Africa we'd get old American telly reruns. I'd watch 'Dawson's Creek' and thought Katie was just terrific. I must have been 8-10 years old and knew I wanted to be an actress too." Holmes' eyes tightening - she's getting really, really, tired of FCBA ingenues reminding her she's past the 30 year mark!
Holmes: elegant black bikini, displaying a good figure to maximum benefit, black trainers. Candice in baby blue Victoria's Secret bra/panties from their 'Signature Collection' low slung hugging narrow hips; butt cheeks rippling as she walks to the ring in bare feet. Red gloves for both. When Holmes answers Swanepoel's offer to touch gloves with disdain, Candice gives Katie a toss of long, golden, hair, then struts back to her corner shaking her butt at the brunette. Interesting!
During R1: Swanepoel confidently bounding out of her corner all lanky-limbed and perky; pushing a straight left in Holmes' face, scuffing her up nicely in the first minute with crazy wild, combinations; the odd right hand lead and even trying an uppercut (misses). Katie uncomfortable in the face of Swannie's wild, bendy, haymakers; retreating awkwardly; blocking frantically with uncoordinated jerky movements; just trying to avoid any serious bodily harm while she tries to figure out the unorthodox South African. Canidice having one of her best rounds ever, sweeping Holmes before her as she chases her around the ring behind a withering barrage of punches from every point of the compass.
R2: Same again! Candice Swanepoel's unorthodox wildness proving a decisive element of success as Holmes' time and again just can't get comfortable in the face of her bewildering array of punches. Katie continually forced into retreat in the face of flashing South African leather at the end of the willowy blonde's long-armed, whiplashing, punches. Every so often, Katie is able to pick a spot; stand her ground and deliver a blow. When she's able to dig in her toes, she can hook the blonde's ribs, trying to slow the rapid pace of the young, fresh-faced, rampaging, blonde. Despite Holmes' best effort, however, it's clear Swanepoel still has the shorter brunette on the run through two.
R3: As her adreneline rush ebbs, Swanepoel's punch rate slows; unable to maintain her high energy, rapid-fire punching. Holmes helping her own cause this round, settling down and getting comfortable as Candice punching becomes more orthodox. Katie targeting Swanepoel's exposed ribs whenever Candice extends outward, slightly off balance after punching. As Swannie's pace slows, her head becomes available and Katie begins to establish her disciplined jab; poking the pink-cheeked, cherubic, blonde face; rocking Candice's head as she starts to work some crisp combinations - dropping the occasional right on Candice. At one point, a sweet left hook/right cross combo puts a distinct shimmy in Swanepoel's limber knees - but the blonde comes firing back when she's hurt and a looping overhand right sends Katie scurrying back shaking her head to clear it as she regroups. But Candice is subjected to systematic punishment this round as the veteran Holmes is able to work combos behind her jab and firm up her stance.
Swanepoel vs. Holmes (Conc)

R4: Very workmanlike Holmes this round; pumping her jab steadily....pump the jab... pump the jab. She's mixing in right hands everytime it looks like Swanepoel anticipates the left. Midway, Holmes with another hard combination, a straight right off the jab. DOWN GOES SWANEPOEL! Candice up quickly, stumbling, falling to all fours, spitting out her mouthpiece; pulling herself up the ropes, staggering back to the ropes where she takes the eight with her butt on the strands. Candice clearly dazed and woozy as Holmes gets after her at the ropes! Holmes digging lefty in under Swanepoel's right elbow, coming over her left shoulder with the right; gobsmacking her head onto her right shoulder! Holmes squaring up, working the middle; coming up between Swanepoel's elbows with two uppercuts - one to each of the Victoria's Secret Signature Collection cups - taking the blonde's breath away! Then it's back to the body! Holmes drilling lefts and right in under Swanepoel's flapping elbows, smashing her belly button! Candice' arms drape limp over Katie's shoulders; hips thrusting forward; blonde struggling to wrap up and clinch. Holmes stepping back, making space between their hips; gutting her girl with both hands! Candice no longer fighting back, arms just hugging Holmes' neck, cheek on cheek like two lovers. Referee - seeing no choice - jumps in, cradles the sobbing Swannie in his arms and bundles her away to her corner where he delivers her into the tender embrace of Charlize Theron - who looks totally stunned by the disheveled state her countrywoman protégé was reduced to in a short period. TKO4 Holmes.
After: Holmes getting her gloves off quickly; running a comb through damp hair - wanting to look good for photographers; then turns and heads to Candice's corner for some postfight 'fun' at the blonde's expense. Katie not known as a 'walker' but there's just something about this particular leggy blonde that appears to have Katie's teeth on edge. So when she arrives and stands firmly in front of Swanepoel's stool, legs wide apart, hands planted on her hips, gaze fixed and glaring down at Candice who looks up with trepidation, fans are on the edges of their seats.
Holmes extends a hand, wiggles her fingers, "Up," she says simply. Swanepoel, with Theron's hand on her butt to steady her, rises and stands in front of Holmes suitably subdued; head bowed. "I want a victory lap," Holmes grins. "And at my 'advanced age' I might need someone to take my arm...you know, to help me if I fall and can't get up?" she laughs.
Swanepoel blushes, shakes her head, "I...I didn't mean..."
"Shhhhhh," Holmes quiets her with a finger pressed on Candice's swollen lips. "You just come along like a good little lap dog; watch; see how it's done; learn. You never know - you may get a chance to enjoy another victory stroll someday." Holmes takes Swanepoel firmly by the elbow and together they make a circuit of the ring to loud applause from the 'Katiacs' in the crowd.
When they return to Candice's corner, Katie leaves Swanepoel, exits the ring and goes to meet the media. "She's a tough little girl," Katie tells them, "Gave me a lot of problems the first two rounds. But, as I expected from watching her video, she's undisciplined. It just took a while to figure her out, but she left me a lot of openings to exploit. Frankly, I was surprised when the referee stopped it; I'd seen how tough she fought Miller and I expected she'd take a lot more chopping before I felled her, but so be it. Anyway, looks like this brunette still has what it takes to tame those blonde youngsters, doesn't it?"
Candice Swanepoel downcast in her appearance, not unexpected in view of her recent record. "I thought I'd turned a corner beating Harmon," she said. "It's hard to believe, but maybe I let myself get a little 'overconfident' with Holmes. The first two rounds, she was running away and she never hurt me. I thought if I kept after her I'd eventually catch her and knock her out...or at least down. But she had an answer for everything I did the last couple of rounds; caught me with a right early in the fourth and I don't remember much after that. She's better than her record led me to believe. Maybe I should stop paying so much attention to the records and start listening to Char and Cat."
Charlize to the podium, pointing out, "Candice is going through a tough learning period right now. Some may think we should be protecting her more, but Stone and I have a development plan for her. She's faced some hard veteran fighters and we're putting Candice's style together one fight at a time. It's a long term process. I want to point out, however, that I really like what I'm seeing from Candi. She's being knocked down, but she's always getting up. She's tough both physically and mentally; always eager to work and learn in the gym. No reason at all to doubt she'll turn the corner sooner rather than later."
Holmes upbeat; finally seeing her name on the left side of the ledger again after a couple of "rough years" she called them. "There's no reason in the world I shouldn't win fights. You know I've had trouble with free swingers like Swanepoel in the past, but in the end, those girls are usually easier to beat. You have to wait them out, time them, then you can drop the hammer. Boxing is like relationships and riding horses; you've got to work hard and if you take a fall, you get right back up and get on again. And...I do love a challenge," she added, turning to check out Charlize Theron who was sitting to one side, a reassuring arm around Candice's shoulders, consoling her young protégé.
