This weeks PPV consisted of seventeen bouts. We will review them in the order that they took place.
WITHERSPOON/ DANIELLE HARRIS. Two fighters on the track to nowhere. This was an entertaining bout. The two were fairly even at the end of the first five. In the sixth Witherspoon decked Harris and is was all downhill for Harris from there. Witherspoon pitched a shutout the final five and got the wide decision. Witherspoon is having some success under the Academy but just how many fighters are left that she can beat? Not many
SWANEPOEL/ HOLMES. Never, ever, remind your opponent you were a child when you first saw her on TV. Swanepoel did and lived to regret it. Swanepoel did take the first two rounds but Holmes started establishing herself in the third and lowered the boom in the fourth, when she decked Swanepoel and finished her by punching her into swoon and the referee stopped the fight. Theron was stunned by her protege’s loss. That was nothing like she would look like later in the evening.
MEADE/ HENDRICKS. This bout really didn’t excite us but we remained in our seat and toughed out. For the first five rounds it Hendricks has a slight lead but it all went to pot in the sixth. Mead dialed in and and won the rest of the rounds to get a wide decision
MICHALKA/ DOBREV We really have no feel for either. Michalka is apparently on CW which kind of means, if she can’t get a job on a major network, she might as well fight. Dobrev looked like she was going to clean Michalka’s clock for the first three rounds. In the fourth, however, Milhalka caught Dobrev with a hook and Dobrev was undone. Michalka proceed to pound Dobrev until the referee stopped the fight.
KILCHER/ McCARTHY This was one of the most anticipated fights of the night. It wasn’t as brutal as expected. Oh, it was a good and enjoyable fight. For the first three rounds it looked like it was going to be a long night for McCarthy As we see it Jewel had a slight lead at the end of five. McCarthy came back to take four of the last five rounds and salt away the decision. We were surprised that there were no knockdowns and we didn’t expect this fight to go the distance. Actually, the only hope Jewel had was a knockout and she didn’t get it.
FISHEL/ MACK Fishel trying to prove that a fighter can come back from retirement and have success. She hasn’t done it yet but she made a giant step towards that goal last night. Mack was never in the fight. Fishel gave Mack a little rough time in the first but in the second she brutalized her with a vicious beating. Mack, not surprisingly couldn’t take it and went down to all fours where she was counted out.
DUFF/ PANETTIERE Duff apparently losing weight for a wedding. She should have gone to the alter rather than the ring. Duff did take the first round and floored her opponent in the fifth. The rest of the fight belonged to Panettiere who dropped Duff twice. Duff managed to finish the fight but we hope her wedding is not in the next week or two since she looked pretty beat up at the end of the night.
ARMSTONG/ SCERBO We had no interest in this fight. We were down in the bar having a couple of Jack’s on the rocks. Our runner advised us that Scerbo had won by a KO. We thought, well that’s OK but we haven’t missed anything
LILLY/ ALBA Another much anticipated fight. This one lived up to it’s billing, All the first five rounds were entertaining with Lilly having a 3-2 lead. The sixth round was a real, as Sim, said. war. Alba was down twice, Lilly once but unfortunately Alba clobbered Lilly while she was down. We weren’t sure Lilly would recover from the foul and things looked dim for her in the seventh. Conditioning, adrenalin or pride took over for Lilly in the eighth and she banged out wins in all three rounds to get the decision
SHAKRIA/ BILSON It has been several years since we have seen Shakria in action. While we on not big on flyweights, we must Shakria she didn’t disappoint us. Bilson had control of the fight for the first four rounds but at the beginning of the fifth, Shakria caught her with an overhand right that put her on the floor. Bilson made it to her feet. Big mistake. Shakria piled into her crippling her to the body and than going headhunting that ended with Bilson being counted out,
HUDGENS/ TISDALE. There are a few flyweight bouts that we would watch. This wasn’t one of them. Actually we had planned on watching the fight but when we saw them step into the ring, we thought we are out of here and back down to the bar we went. A Disney chick and a fugitive on CW. There is a pair for you. Well, we got to say who won, not that we care, but Tisdale won by a TKO
RYDER/ CRUZ What can you say about this fight. It was Ryder. Do we need to say more? Cruz may not be the greatest fighter in the world. Let’s make that a little more definite. She is not the greatest fighter in the world, but last night she looked like it. She simply pounded Ryder for six rounds before knocking her out in the seventh. Is Ryder really that stupid that she thinks she can fight?
ROHM/ CUCUO So far we have said a lot of bad things about a lot of fighters and there is more to come, but we have to stay on the good side of the WIz. Actually we gave Rohm a zero chance of winning this fight. She nearly did, although nearly is not quite good enough. Rohm had a wide lead going into the ninth and was on her way to a decision no matter what Cucuo did in the last two rounds. Let us take that back. She would have won the decision had Cucuo not landed a single uppercut right on Rohm’s chin and the fight was over. Rohm’s chances of breaking into the top ten are gone but she gave a much better fight than we ever anticipated
MILLER/ CARTER Oh my gosh, we had to sit through another flyweight bout. This one however was worth sitting through. It was a fight of closely contested rounds. Miller did have the lead at the end of the first half including decking Carter in the fourth. At the end of eight, it was still anyone’s fight but Miller rallied and took the last two rounds and got the decision
LIVELY/ THERON The comeback dreams of the “golden goddess” died last night at the hard hands of an FCBA non entity. Theron got pulverized, lasting less that nine minutes. Academy is trying to put a spin on the woeful exhibition. Ginny says Lively is one of the top young fighters in the FCBA and losing to her is no disgrace. Wrong. Lively is a third tier fighter and losing to her is a huge disgrace. It shows that Theron clearly doesn’t have it any more. As far as fighting smart, Cindy Crawford said it all back on 9/3/03 when she said “When’s the last time you ever saw Charlize Theron fight smart” The Academy keeps on quoting the statistic that Theron has lost over a third of her fights. That is far from correct. Her loss percentage is a lot closer to 25% rather that 33% That is how desperate they are to minimize this disaster. Theron’s management is on record as saying they would rather see Theron fight every PPV and lose rather than not fight. They may well get their wish, but we have to ask why they would humiliate a once great fighter and ruin her great records. Do we really mean that Lively is a third tier fighter?. Yes we do and we stand by it.
RIGHETTI/ KEIBLER Get ready for a shock. We are going to say something nice about a fighter. No, it is not Keibler. We have never been a big fan of Righetti’s but we think she may now be the best fighter in the FCBA, dominating the way Theron did for many years. It’s too bad the two didn’t meet a couple of years ago. Now it would be slaughter. In this fight Righetti showed why we think she is the best. Righetti got rung up and dropped in the second but she ended up backing Keibler off. In the third Righetti was back in form. In the fourth, it was all the champ as she teed off and blasted Keibler into oblivion and got a TKO. We have not been back long enough to ascertain who her opponents might be but whoever they may be our money will be on Righetti
STRAHOVSKI/ BROOK The clock struck twelve for Cinderella and there was no carriage. She got hauled away in a pumpkin. out cold. Strahovsky was making Brook look bad through four but she forgot what she had observed in the pre-fight. Brook has a big right hand. In the fifth. Brook landed that big right hand and the fight was over, Strahovski had lost her title and was going to have a huge headache in the morning. In our predictions although we predicted Strahovski to win, we speculated about her being one of the numerous fighters who came on, made a big splurge early, winning a title, and then lapsed into just another member of the FCBA. We have a feeling that is what is going to happen to Strahovski. Time will tell
If we haven’t said something unkind about a member of your stable, well there are more PPV’s to come. We will get around to you. Just in case you would like to disagree with anything we have said. You can always make a note and when we are proved wrong, remind us Thanks to Sim and Ginny for a fine weekends entertainment
Sim, after we made our predictions, we saw where Ginny wasn't doing the write up on Theron. That was our clue that CT was toast. Had we noted that before we made our prediction we would have gone with Lively but we didn't and we chaulk another wrong
