TESS VALMORE
This weekend’s PPV consisted of seven bouts, three involving CW personnel and three more from the Academy. There was one of those hated draws and one draw that was allowed to continue to a conclusion that lasted a record sixteen rounds. There were three knockouts and one highly controversial TKO
PARK/ J CARPENTER Park hasn’t been very successful this year, but at least she has been fighting, which is more than we could say for Carpenter. We thought was a made for order win for Park. We were wrong. Carpenter took the first two rounds and had the lead at the halfway point although Park did deck Carpenter in the fifth. Park managed to take the lead going into the final round but lost it. The decision went to the judges who took the easy way out and declared this bout a draw.
KELLY/ MEESTER. A fight that lasted a record breaking sixteen rounds. It was good fight all the way. The fight was declared a draw at the end of ten, but Kelly insisted to go on until one girl won two rounds in a row. They swapped rounds until the sixteenth when Kelly dialed in and punched Meester out. Kelly is showing all the signs of becoming a top flight bantam. It would be a stretch however, to put her in with Lilly right now. Archer thinks we sneer at the smaller women. He’s right. I don’t have much use for them, although some do make good cocktail waitresses. I doubt a lightweight fight would go sixteen rounds. They hit too hard. I wonder why this fight was chosen to go into the format it did. There was a draw in the fight immediately before this one. Why wasn’t that fight chosen to go the two rounds in a row format. Could it be that there is a CW connection here, part of the present CW mania? By the way, there is another way to look at Kelly’s win. It took her sixteen rounds to do what every fighter that has beaten Meester has done in ten or less
DOBREV/ ACCOLA Dobrev, the so called “CW phenom”, went against fighter who has not only not won a fight, she hadn’t even finished one. Accola has won one now and we think she did it convincingly. She got off to a great start taking the first three rounds and having a 4-1 lead at the end of five. She also took the eighth and ninth rounds. To us that means that she won at least six rounds. Accola was awarded a one point decision.
MICHALKA/ McCORD. AS with every fight so far last night, one fighter got off to a good start and this time it was McCord. She took the first three rounds and had the lead at the end of five. In the sixth McCord’s wheels started coming off and Michalka floored her with a hook, Michalka went on to dominate the second half and got another knockdown in the ninth. The two knockdowns were decisive as Michalka got the decision
CRUZ/ ENGLAND Cruz gave up inches in height and some years in age and still managed to beat a young and promising lightweight. We have to question, however, the judgement of the referee. In the fourth round Cruz hurt England with a body blow and went on the offensive. England went into a defensive mode and for some reason, the referee who didn’t see a Cruz fowl, did see punishment that wasn’t there. This is the worst call I have seen since I have been back. Academy management thinks the referee did the right thing. They would, the call favored their fighter. We do compliment both for their post fight good sportsmanship
SWANEPOEL/ ATKINSON If you like a fight between skillful boxers, moving smoothly, punching and dodging return blows, this was not your kind of fight. It was amateurish to say the least. This was a wild swinging, no defense type. You couldn’t call it a brawl by any means as neither are that good. Swanepoel hurt Atkinson in the second and English woman came back to not only hurt Swanepoel in the third but to knock her out. There was humiliation in the aftermath, which we will not review because we do not approve if post fight humiliations
BELL/ BELLUCI I have always wondered why trainers feel compelled to get into the ring when most of them were not that good. It usually ends badly for the trainer and that proved true in this fight. The only surprise was the shortness of the bout. The jugmugging started immediately and quickly ended when Bell landed a hook and followed with a right cross and Belluci was down and out. Belluci’s night was not over but I won’t go into that |
