Fighting on a card designed by HBO to generate a few worthy “Connelly-busters” for 2006--high hopes were placed on Maria’s shoulders to earn break-out momentum at Aniston’s expense. Aniston--previously beaten this year by Connelly and not expected to close the gap anytime soon--been expected to fight hard in a gallant losing effort. That’s why they fight the fights, and it’s why Maria Menounos is still languishing in the “pretty opponent” leagues.

For seven rounds, Maria made her backers and HBO matchmakers look like geniuses--hurting Aniston with right hands, backing the veteran vixen up and enjoying long stretches of body punching dominance against the ropes in almost every round. Jennifer dug out a hard fought second and was competitive in every heat thereafter, but the freshness and vigor of her opponent simply couldn’t be denied. As minutes passed, Maria’s ownership of Jennifer became increasingly apparent. Menounos couldn’t wipe the grin off her face as she bounced back to her stool for breaks: Jennifer couldn’t get the grimace off her lips, or the winces out of her eyes as she slouched back to hers.

In the final heat, Jennifer dig in and fought Maria to a standstill at midring, ducking and countering with tight hooks as slender lasses torqued and slung hot leather shoulder to shoulder. Beating Maria to a hook, Jennifer immediately came back a right hand, tagging Menounos flush while Maria’s right sailed over top: the brunette beauty was badl frazzled, staggering hurt to the ropes. Jennifer hopped forward and put a murderous barrage of simple straight lefts and rights directly onto Maria’s staring face, jamming half a dozen unanswered punches. Facing into punches--gloves bouncing off her face, poor Maria sank dimly t her knees, tracked on the way down by Jennifer’s accurate bombardment, and the ref jumped in to body Aniston back. Stunned, brutalized--Maria sat on her haunches in battered confusion, unable to rally herself for the 10 count. Jennifer Aniston raised her mitts and strutted away the KO8 aviatrix--engineering one of the most dramatic come-from-behind efforts of the year in the process and ratifying her veteran credentials in the bargain.
