BEFORE: "Just stay busy," perky Perabo says when asked about her general approach these days. "Not many girls have ever gotten a second chance in the FCBA: I know how lucky I am, and I know I can't wait around to pick and choose fights. Emily's not marquee, but she can fight: I have to get in the ring and work, no matter what, and I'm more than happy to take Rose on!" Emily similarly motivated: Syfy beauties often have trouble getting off the comic-con circuit...chance to get in with Piper a good spot for Em. "I like that she's sturdy like me - a fighter," Emily acknowledges, "I'm not going to have to send out a search party to find her, which is great, because I feel if I can swap punches with a girl, I can beat anybody!" Piper in midnight blue bandeau bikini; small pink gloves; hair in loose beach tangles. Emily in grey stretch cotton sport top; navy hipster-fit bottoms; small white mitts; hair loose, tangly curled.
During R1: Girls wade in, greet each other via right hands to tummies; left hooks to jugs, with Emily getting the extra right hand through to Piper's chin. That's the way of it - girls bumping each other off, walking each other down, pounding the body, coming up compact to head. Perabo getting off strong, but backing up: from the midway point on, she's fighting with her back to ropes. Emily laying in close - rubbing with her head on Piper's face - wrestling and writhing with Piper's arms to expose torso: good grinding stuff from an experienced Canadian Clinch-fighter...Perabo working hard just to prevent being ground up here.
R2: Similar no-nonsense fare - girls trying to step in with a hard right hand to the body to start, then banging up-torso in combination from there. Crowd-pleasing spank ringing out as small gloves bounce off firm shoulders; dig at lats/ribs; lap at tummies. Head shots are clubbing strokes from close-in - girls clouting each other stubby off the bump. Perabo fitting a few short left uppercuts to Emily's chin throughout the round...Rose gobbles them in good shape, but visible head movement catches eyes of the judges.
R3: Girls close, bang - each trying to establish beef-supremacy tummy to tummy. Writhing, muscular arms constantly wriggling for inside position - girls often clipping each other on the cheek in the process of this wrestling. Emily grinding Piper to ropes: Piper reaching right arm under Em's left and turrrrning her into ropes: Rose responding with the same kind of leverage technique to quickly retake top position. Final minute - girls reaching left arms in under opposing rights in half-clinch - chins resting on opposing left shoulders as right hands pound at left hips/ribs, or scoop at tummy when there's room. Bell: Emily loving it - she's on top, clinch-fighting her heart out; Piper a little frazzled - not used to being outworked from such a posture. BREAK - Perabo's trainer getting after her: "Why are you going to war with this girl inside? She's world-class in the clinch; so-so outside. Gimme angles Piper - don't get all tummy-proud in there. touch her up THEN get after her baby, just like we trained!"
R4: Piper shows she can listen: a little clockwise steppin' around the jab; some smart step-outs and walk arounds - all designed to get Emily moving her feet. Perabo still plenty aggressive - coming in off the angle, chopping the short hook over Emily's right hand; clouting her the right hand in close - trading hot to the body, then disengaging before Rose can get comfortable. Both girls scoring, but Piper clearly the initiator: her legs more educated than the stand-and-deliver stems of Rose.
R5: Piper starts well with the jab - punishing Emily's face...but Perabo slowly becoming stationary, willing to stand toe-to-toe with a hittable foe. Trouble is, Emily's punching back - catching Piper a variety of hard hooks off the face/wide right hands in the ribs as girls bob and dip in mirror-image crossed-arm stances. Perabo's corner visibly distressed to see her taking some BIG head shots: she's weathering them well, but crowd roaring enthusiastically as Rose is able to dip side to side and catch Perabo with authority in the exchanges. Bell: Perabo upbeat, competitive, but really lumping up through 5 rounds of hot-tossing with Rugged Emily Rose.
R6,7: More shoulder to shoulder grinding - girls just in there working, picking each other up stubby uppercuts; hooking rival bodies; bumping shoulders; walking each other to ropes. Girls will clinch with one or both arms, but it's always precursor to work: ref rarely has to step in as brawny blondes struggle to impose will. Emily takes a hard fought 6th; Piper a bitterly contested 7th...both girls lumping up nicely, breathing hard as this thing's becoming a real slobberknocker.
R8: Piper using her legs a bit more - just turning Emily, getting her to fall behind with the jab, then luring Rose forward as Em feels she needs to get even. Perabo laying traps, walking Rose into right uppercuts off the back (right) leg, or check hooks off the right leg: Rose taking it well, but it's always Piper starting the exchanges with an advantage. Lovely stuff to the body in spots: neither girl shy about lowering her head and heaving-ho downstairs with both arms pumping.
R9: Piper getting her way fairly consistently - it's the jab, the legs, the smart in and out, and the hard punching in combination slowly whittling Emily down. Rose forming defensive crossed arm more and more often - trudging forward, taking a beating in her flanks or upside the head and she tries to close. Down the stretch, Piper RIPS Emily right/left borderline low on the waist - just beneath Rose's protective left arm. Rose bunches up, groaning in protest: Perabo reloads, dips left shoulder, fits a clipping short left uppercut to chin that puts Emily wobbly butt. Perabo relieved to see it: she's been hitting Emily her Sunday best in this fight - this is the first time Rose has shifted.
R10: Perabo advancing, going right at the Rose midsection as Emily collapses back into ropes. Emily hurt, showing left across her body/right at her left cheek, palm out: Perabo squares away, lets hands go robusto. Terrible pasting dished out...Rose too stubborn to go down, but she's just facing groggy into punishment - Piper's gloves bouncing off arms/skull of her foe as Emily visibly wilts. AND THE REF STEPS IN! Rose battered senseless - curvy legs holding her up, but she offers no protest as official cradles her to safety. TKO10 Piper Perabo.
After: Busted-up Perabo SO relieved: big hug and consoling words for equally battered Emily after a rugged dime. "THOSE were tough rounds," Piper admits - cute face puffy and sore. "I really struggled with my ego and discipline tonight: she was like 'I dare you to go tummy-to-tummy' and I was like 'I know I should box more, but damn it...I want to show her' - you know? Maybe I could have won the fight inside, but I don't know - it was really tuff in there. My legs were the key - any time I used them properly and worked my angles, I felt a lot more in control!" |
