Next up at bantamweight, hometown girl Charlotte Church, a reluctant new recruit to the BBU ranks, takes on the classy little Aussie Melissa George. Charlotte has lost a lot of weight recently to make this weight properly, but she’s still the bigger girl, and Mel will need to be at her best here. Charlotte is somewhere like 12 years younger, too, and is looking to give her fans a show tonight.
Charlotte wears an all red leotard for this fight, with Melissa in green and gold – it looks like a rugby matchup.
Round 1
Another classic boxer v puncher start to this fight, with George smacking crisp, sharp jabs and stabs at Church’s face, using her height and reach to clip the Weslh girl repeatedly, darting inside the younger girl’s guard to work rapid fire combos to her head and body - then getting out of range, and she’s making Charlotte look poor, her face confused at this speed. What is Charlotte doing in retaliation? Not much – she’s looking to hunt Melissa down, but doesn’t really semm to know how.
First round – Melissa!.
Round 2
The round starts well for Melissa, jabbing and moving nicely, keeping the powerful Charlotte at arm’s length, and those punches are not soft – Church finds her head being jolted backwards. George is in command of this fight at this stage – the girl is simply too classy for Church, outboxing her so, so easily, but taking no chances, never staying still enough to trade, and those long range smacking punches are irritating rather than hurting Charlotte.
Second round – Melissa!
Round 3
Charlotte needs to close down the older girl quickly, and she does just that – by the middle of the round, Church is looking good, jabbing Melissa good and hard in the face, making the older girl lose that rhythm she’s built up over the opening couple of rounds. Charlotte is a powerful girl, and Melissa is covering up as she thuds some good shots into her body on the ropes, looking for a big shot to the face, but it won’t come, George a little too crafty in defence to be prised open just yet.
Charlotte gets the third round.
Round 4
Charlotte comes out all confidence, expecting to pick up where she left off, but Melissa's footwork is too much for her to keep up with, the older girl rescuing herself by skipping and flitting around the ring, circling the Welsh girl, picking her punches neatly, clipping the younger girl’s face, then stepping back, avoiding the counter attacks. Church is looking clumsy again, looking to push George into the ropes, but just taking too many shots to be competitive.
Melissa again.
Round 5
Melissa is sensing by now that Charlotte may be beginning to tire – maybe she’s lost that weight too quickly – and she makes a big, concerted effort to batter the home girl’s body, working hard to Church’s midsection with both fists in combination, and she’s starting to get through to the younger girl now, her defence is becoming to unravel, and she’s getting pretty well knocked about on the ropes as the round progresses, the dancing Aussie able to stand back, circling the younger girl again, cuffing her face as she looks for the next opportunity to get up close.
Melissa takes another round – she’s way ahead.
Round 6
Church needs to up her workrate or lose this fight, and she is at last getting through to the taller girl with some of her best work, jabbing her face nicely, solid shots getting Mel to the cheeks and mouth, involving the older girl in toe-to-toe exchanges, which may not suit her. Melissa is having to backpedal for most of this round, with Church landing the heavier shots, although the Aussie is still jabbing and moving, landing more punches by using her reach, quantity rather than quality of punch though.
Tight round, but maybe Charlotte’s.
Round 7
Once again, Charlotte’s confidence (which never needs much boosting) is high, following her better showing in the sixth, and she’s almost chasing after Melissa in the opening moments, which makes her look foolish, the Aussie’s footwork again coming to her rescue as she circles the Welsh girl, snapping those smart jabs into her face, none of the punches particularly hard, but Church’s face is bruised from the sheer volume of shots she’s taken, and she’s looking mighty tired by the bell.
Melissa regains control in the seventh.
Round 8
Charlotte does her best work in the first half of the round once more, trying to move Melissa onto the ropes to club away at her body, but George is still fit enough to stay on her toes, dancing around and away, those jabs still smacking into Church’s face with tiresome regularity, then, as the round draws on, Charlotte is tiring again, and Melissa takes over, getting some nice right hooks to Charlotte’s face to follow the jabs, and the round ends with Charlotte covering up on the ropes as the high-octane Aussie punches away at her.
Another round for Melissa
Round 9
Bruised and tired, Charlotte trundles forwards again, still looking to nail Melissa with one of her big hooks, but the Aussie still has enough energy left to keep out of the Welsh girl’s range, the audience becoming a little restless at the failure of their girl to land any telling blows. Church is not getting really hurt by George’s punching on the retreat, but she's just not able to answer Mel's class, and she ends the round back on the ropes, panting as the older girl carries on clipping away at her.
Melissa takes another round.
Round 10
Into the final round, and poor Charlotte has nothing left to give – she’s just a sitting target for the energetic Melissa, who, even at this stage of the fight, is circling and boxing Church, giving her one final lesson in boxing skills as she just jabs and jabs her face right through to the bell, and she gets the unanimous decision.
Melissa George beat Charlotte Church on points.
Post-fight, and Charlotte is apologizing to her fans – maybe she wasn’t ready for this fight after all. Melissa? She declines an interview, just shouting, “C’mon Aussie, C’mon!” as she leaves the ring.
