Karen is determined to make a show as a welterweight, but in reality perhaps she’s a tall lightweight, more in the Beau Garett mould, whereas Katrina Law's a compact welterweight. Karen will be relying on her height and reach, against a girl who has learnt a lot since she last fought a Brit – that was a defeat by Michelle Ryan.

The tall Karen looks impressive in a blue bikini for this fight, with Katrina favouring a red one-piece outfit.

Round 1

As expected, the fight starts with both girls aggressive – Karen’s jabbing away as hard as she can, trying to keep out of Katrina’s range in the early part of the round, looking to box from a distance. For her part, Law is bristling with violent intent, slipping the punches, throwing solid hooks from her crouching stance, and she connects with a couple of bodyshots late on – enough leather landed in Karen’s gut to worry her.

Karen's round – but it’s close.

Round 2

Karen's still got that left jab working, but she’s having to keep too far away to land anything of substance as the shorter Katrina gets inside her reach, looking for hooks. As the round progresses, it’s Law getting to Karen’s body with both hands, and those shots hurt – Gillan is pleased to hear the bell.

Close again – Katrina this time.

Round 3

Katrina Law again gets inside Karen's reach, and she’s punishing the Scot to her ribcage, helping herself to that long body. Karen is looking what she is at the moment – a raw beginner – and Katrina is making sure the tall girl will be aching for several days to come as she plunders that body.

Katrina gets in front.

Round 4

Karen ups the tempo in this round, jabbing and moving on those long legs, and the American is unable to get inside that reach this time around, her face taking a lot of punishment. As the round progresses, Karen gains confidence, and she follows those jabs up with a few rangy right crosses to win respect from her opponent, who nods at her when the bell ends it.

Karen came back! That’s evened it up

Round 5

Karen starts the round well again, her darting jabs are relentless, smacking into Katrina’s eager face, reddening the skin around her eyes. The round continues with Karen in charge, but although those long right hands are scoring points, Gillan’s not hurting Law - just keeping her from getting her own, more punishing punches off.

Karen takes the round, and the lead.

Round 6

Karen can’t keep up the pace she set in the last two rounds, and she finds Law weaving in close, hurting her with good left, right combination punches to her body, and the Scot is clinching by the middle of the round. After the girls are broken, Katrina gets in closer, testing out whether she’s softened Karen up enough, and she lands some nice hooks to her head out of that crouching stance, hurting the girl for sure.

Katrina takes that round easily.

Round 7

This time Gillan is having to defend from the bell, with Law weaving in, staying low, fighting rather than boxing, belting Karen’s body. Karen is showering her with desperate one-twos, but there’s little power behind those punches, and it’s not looking good for the Scot. Katrina comes up out of the crouch midway through the round, looking for the redhead’s face, and a shocking left hook swivels Gillan's head, dropping her in a heap a count of 8. Back on her feet, but dazed, Karen somehow gets through the round, but she isn’t trying to land anything.

Big winning round for Katrina.

Round 8

Bravely, Gillan is feisty after the knockdown – she comes back at Law, jabbing, drilling in right hands, keeping her distance by circling the ring. It’s a good comeback from the taller girl, but she still has to take her share of bodyshots when she begins to tire in the closing seconds, her defence a shambles as she just carries on jabbing.

Karen shades that round.

Round 9

She’s tired and hurt, but Gillan does it again – the ninth is a nice round of long, rangy boxing from the Scottish actress, and she even spices it up in spots by throwing some zesty right hand zingers into a weary Katrina Law’s face, topping up with the odd Bob-Foster style hook to force Law back outside, pretty much where she wants her at this stage.

Karen takes that round too – this fight is drifting away from Katrina.

Round 10

Both girls are tired, and this round shows it – gone are Karen’s jab and move tactics, as the fight descends into hard fought slugging. Karen is covering up her face with her gloves as Law beats her around the flanks and waist, making the Scot yelp in pain, then Gillan answers back surprisingly from the closer ranges, but it’s a tough night for her, which she acknowledges at the bell.

It’s a unanimous and well fought decision – Katrina Law beat Karen Gillan on points.

This was not Karen's fight tonight, but she's competitive – she showed enough in this fight to indicate that first win is not far away.
