UD10 Park

UCLA students showed up by the hundreds for the rock ‘em sock ‘em contest. Doig found herself outgunned and outsized,  but nevertheless gave the crowd its money’s worth in negotiating with, boxing with, and on occasion, brawling with her rangy opponent.

Park doesn’t fight the way her body might suggest she should. Long, lean and Asian--you’d expect Grace to nibble the corners, paint the black, work outside and outclass her usually shorter comp at bantamweight. Instead, Grace uses her rangy frame to bang at opposing ribcages, loosening smaller foes up then hammering them with lanky leverage to the head, usually with the stricken vixen staring back in shock from the ropes. Roaring out to a 10-8 lead without the knockdown in the first, Grace put just such a look of stunned wonder on Lexa’s face as the realization dawned on Doig that Grace was without out doubt the bigger, stronger woman in the ring. Fortunately for fight fans, Doig took i5t in stride, and settled in to see what she could do about it.

Employing the same hit and run tactics as Natalie portman had against her--Lexa engaged and disengaged, used the ring and picked her spots to trade hot--always with the intent of preventing Grace from setting her feetl the girls swapped rounds--all of them close--and sharp Doig combinations even had Grace staggered and blinking in the 5th.

In the end, Grace’s relentless pressure and weight of shot prevailed as Doig was slowly battered, forced to the ropes and systematically worked over. Doig’s skills allowed her to defend pockets for a time, but she couldn’t reverse the tide: Park was too strong, too willful, too busy to be countered effectively or pushed back. What had been a very competitive nail-biter became a steady, pulverizing white-wash as poor Lexa took a terrible drubbing down the stretch--her increasingly shabbiness gallivanting Grace as Park finished the tenth hitting just as hard as in the 10th as she had in the first. “The division fears me,” Grace would assert in post fight. “They’re all afraid I’ll turn them into the next Jolene Blalock. And you know what? They’re right.”
