CELEBRITY BOXING AFTER DARK

(6 weeks after Cerra/de Pablo)

Results: Simguy; Writing: Archer

Back to back wins over Piper Perabo and Cote de Pablo have given Erica Cerra her first serious FCBA press attention in years. Archer News publishes as in-depth interview in which Erica discusses her little known fighting past such as her legendary 11-round Canadian battle with Ona Grauer which helped earn her a reputation among Canadian fans as superior clinch fighter. Also discussed were her Comic-Con wrestling matches with the likes of Allison Mack, Cassidy Freeman, Missy Peregrym and Erica Durance (“They usually started out in a ring, but ended up as falls-count-anywhere, the fan boys just loved seeing a pin up close when that happened. I notice those girls never talk about those fights with me--guess that tells you who usually won!” ). In addition, Erica tells “Celebrity Ring” that her future plans include a possible rematch with old FCBA rival Jennifer Lopez (“if she dares”) or Lis Rohm, at lightweight, but she expected to spend most of her time in the bantam division. “I think I am good enough to win the title. Really.”

Meanwhile, Poppy Montgomery, who is about to return to network television this fall on the CBS series “Unforgettable”, is not happy to find so much attention directed at her cable TV actress opponent. Grinding her teeth, she says: “I am very happy to be getting more FCBA action. My last fight with Elodie Frege wasn’t that much of a showcase for me because, as I said then French girls just can’t stand up to a good Aussie girl. I am at least hoping that Erica will give me enough rounds to be impressive and get me the high quality opponents I deserve.”

Erica steps to the podium and says politely: “I will certainly do plan to give Poppy the ‘high quality opponent‘ she deserves, though I think she should realize that could well mean that she’s running a big risk in fighting me. I’m no French pastry--I hit hard and often. I hope she won’t be too surprised if things don’t go quite as she planned. After all, I have newly re-established FCBA career of my own to look out for and I mean to make this 3 wins in a row.”

(Icy smile from Poppy, but Erica just gives it right back to her. The tension is thick, though no untoward incidents occur at the preflight).

Fight night finds Poppy in baby blue satiny pushup bra and bikini panties, hair drawn back in a battle braid, baby blue workout gloves. Erica in satiny pink pushup bra and bikini panties, pink workout gloves, hair pulled back into a ponytail. Poppy radiating cold hostility. Erica smiles back tightly, her eyes are narrowed with intensity.

During R1: Poppy Mo out of her corner and at Erica C with BRISK execution of her offensive power. Erica takes a rapidfire series of stiff, pumping jabs to the head, lefts and rights swishing across her pate, swiveling her ponytail in wild reaction. Poppy shoves a right up under the Cerra breast line and a left to the temple, then a crisp pivot left. Though battered early, the brunette shifts and pursues as the blonde fades back. Sharp series of exchanges, but Montgomery beats Erica to punches, maintains her volume and keeps working angles for her shots. Cerra keeps coming, lands a good right off Poppy’s chin and several wide lefts in behind the elbow, but it’s not enough . Round clearly goes to Poppy Montgomery.

R2: Erica sticks to her fight plan. Bobbing and weaving, she works her way inside and finally achieves penetration to land hard shot on the blonde head and torso. Poppy backed to the ropes and this perfect for Erica to just stand there and work the blonde over. Montgomery doesn’t have much success trying to counter this with clinches, instead has to endure the punishment and suffers to the bell. Round goes to Erica Cerra, who looks pleased with herself at this response to her opening round troubles.

R3: Erica comes forward strong and battles Poppy in close once again, but this time the Aussie blonde stands her ground and keeps her back off the ropes as she tries to resist the brunette offensive. Erica able to get off solid, landing ringing shots to Poppy’s body and head, maintaining a higher hitting rate and walking her blonde down to keep up the pressure. Erica takes the lead in rounds.

R4: Poppy remembers HER fight plan and comes out fast as she did in the 1st and starts landing that stiff jab into Erica’s head. She swiftly follows that up with a series of well-executed combinations, then moves pivot-left for more angles to attack the brunette. Erica seems a bit slow to react to this Montgomery comeback, she bobs and weavers, waiting her turn to punch and getting out worked. Nevertheless, Cerra keeps up a decent defense and doesn’t appear too hurt by the fire she’s taking. Still, Poppy takes the round and evens things up again.

R5: Poppy back at it this round, but with more intense concentration as she works her pattern, Peppering and sidestepping, peppering and sidestepping. Erica doesn’t seem to be handling this tactic too well, though she keeps coming forward with determination, but suffering the consequences as she does. Poppy gets the round and the lead on the cards.

R6: Poppy sticking to her playbook and it continues to pay off. Erica stubbornly hanging in, landing some good punches to the body and ringing up blonde head. Trouble is, there aren’t enough of them and the ones she does land are all receipts for Montgomery punches and there are a lot more of them. Erica is unable to get off first and increasingly it looks like the blonde is imposing her will on the brunette.

R7: Same again this round as Poppy peppers Erica with punches while sidestepping. Erica keeps trying to get in close again, but blonde now able to keep her off , while touching up brunette body and head. Erica getting scuffed up, though not seriously hurt, but there seems to be definite concern in her corner as she seems not to be able to make useful adjustments to deal with the Aussie.

R8: Erica does try to turn things around, showing good a good pressure offensive of her own as the round begins, landing hard to Poppy’s ribcage and making the blonde wince in reaction. However Poppy sticks to her guns, stays focused and rallies behind her jab and then goes back to that so-effective pattern. Sure enough, midway through a Poppy combination lands explosively to brunette chin and ERICA’S HURT! At last, the blonde attack has put the wobble in those pink bottoms as Erica goes back on her heels. Poppy smiles happily and seems invigorated at the sight. Poppy pursues and batters away at the stunned brunette. Cerra tough, she stays on her feet, but has to cover up and allow herself to be moved backwards. Poppy even shows herself a bit of the bully landing a shot or two against Cerra’s shiny lower back, though the ref pushes her back with a wagging finger. Poppy hangs her head and mouths “Sorry.” Bell rings to end the round. Erica has to reach out and grasp the top rope to steady herself before returning to her stool.

R9: Poppy comes out full of smiling confidence that she has this thing in hand. BOOM! Erica suddenly works her way in close and puts a monster hook to blonde chin. Montgomery’s head snaps back and DOWN GOES POPPY! Poppy on her butt, looking up at grimly smiling brunette in astonishment. Montgomery uses the 8-count to try to clear her head, but Erica’s on her immediately. The two go to the ropes for a sustained battle of shove and slug as Erica’s now all over the beleaguered Poppy. Blonde tries desperately to clinch for ref’s breaks and has some success this time as she hangs on to finish the round.

R10: Erica aware that she is likely behind on points, goes for the knockdown, bulling her way in, determined to land the finishing punches. Poppy sees her coming, lets her come in and as Erica comes up out of her crouch, ready to fire--THE BLONDE STRIKES FIRST! RIGHT UPPERCUT/LEFT HOOK AND ERICA DROPS TO HER BUTT! Brunette shakes it off and beats the 10 count, but she is a discouraged looking fighter. Poppy moves aggressively on the brunette. Erica puts up a cranky cross-arm guard to ride out the rest of the round. Comes back UD10 Poppy Montgomery!

After: Poppy raises her arms in triumph and enjoys the cheers of the crowd. Erica looks down at her feet in crestfallen disappointment. Pundits consider this a BIG upset and say that Montgomery discovered that Cerra doesn’t fight well laterally and took advantage of that to expose the brunette a bit. Poppy now the one talking about cracking the contender’s list, while Erica faces some regrouping. No word on who either will fight next, though some reports say Cerra camp reaching out to CSI: Miami’s Emily Procter. Meanwhile, rumors from the Montgomery side say “One faction proposes veteran names like Carla Gugino or Courtney Cox, while another side argues for younger fighters like Lyndsy Fonseca or Anne Hathaway. There’s even a side that says she should do a rematch with Erica Cerra to see if we can’t get some additional attention-getting heat going.” Could be an interesting summer for these two ladies.
