BEFORE: Explosive article in FIGHTING INGENUE suggests Claire's too old to retain finesse-fighter supremacy...can Scarlett rip the torch of skill out of Claire's hands? "I think there is mounting curiousity around this idea that Claire's days as a top skill-fighter are numbered," Scarlett says all sweet and innocent. "I think me moving against Claire echoes the move Claire made to push Kelly Packard aside ten years ago, and there's a lot of excitement around this idea of me maybe doing the same thing. It's upped the bar for this fight - I think there's a lot of pressure on Claire - not just at HISC, but throughout the FCBA - to prove that she's still the sorceress, you know? She's 32: one of these days, the reflexes aren't going to be there, and someone like me is going to be right there...punching Claire in the face!" Danes bored by the whole discussion...far as she's concerned, her skills are beyond reproach. "This whole thing has been trumped up by Fighting Ingenue to sell magazines and create controversy," Claire says with ivy-league disdain. "Scarlett isn't even top 5 on our opposition depth-chart for skill-opponents. She is a southpaw, and that's a wrinkle, but come on: suggesting that Scarlett's going to somehow diminish and surpass me in the ring? That's the kind of talk that can get Johannson hurt." Scarlett in dark charcoal bikini cut along the lines of the Andress Dr. No bikini; small black gloves; copper ringlets long/loose. Claire in navy sport bikini top shot through with baby blue plaid lines; navy bottoms; small powder blue gloves.

During R1: Claire's left side angled into Scarlett's right side - the Danes left hand slapping at the Johannson right as girls probe reflexes midring. Trick is for Claire to shoot right hands through the middle - Scarlett to shoot left hands...fighters darting in and out at each other, trying to get the clean touch in any engagement. Midway through, a poking left slams Claire's chin down...blonde girl stumbling back on her heels, traveling several feet before stabilizing: by the time Scarlett's closed-distance - Claire's chasing her off via stiff left jab triplets. Nevertheless - one good poke enough to win the round for Scarlett in a tactical first.

R2: Same "hinged" arrangement as girls close to work...Scarlett able to jump in off a feint; jam the left onto Claire's chin, then; crowd close by wrapping her right arm over Claire's extended left. Working in tight, Scarlett's snug and safe - that left hand slapping onto Claire's chest or scrubbing at her chin while Scarlett's tucked in on the Danes left side. Claire scowling - trying to tug her left arm free, trying to hit back with right hands...but Scarlett's left is inside, forcing Claire to slap ineffectually at Scarlett's back. Ref issues breaks throughout, but Johannson pretty good as slithering her way in, scuffing a few cheap left hands and bedeviling Claire in these semi-clinches. Danes not hurt, but she's frustrated and shutout through 2.

R3: Claire two-jabbing, pivoting crisply clockwise...she's keeping that left foot outside of Scarlett's lead (right) foot. Johannson ducking/rolling, following Claire - blonde girl mixing up jabs head and body as she keeps her distance. Johannson stalking, coiling down in her crouch in menacing fashion, but Claire does a nice job keeping redhead from erupting.

R4: Same again - Claire using her legs, staying outside, keeping Johannson low/defensive. Danes not scoring stiff - but that jab has Scarlett pinned down, and a few choice straight right hands are finding the Johannson chest.

R5: HARD poking right hand gets through to Scarlett's chin...SHE stumbles back on her heels, eyes wide: Claire rushing in for clean up. Slick, lathering beatdown administered - Scarlett scoured along the ropes, chased down and tattooed by Claire - Danes coldhearted in pursuit. Scarlett doing a good job bobbing and circling - often using a neat little right shoulder push on Claire while swiveling counterclockwise around the Danes left flank. Scarlett's hurt, and both girls know it, but Claire can't find the off switch as clever southpaw proves elusive.

R6: Girls flat footed, pawing left hands (Claire), right hands (Scarlett) to set up the off-hand power punch. Midway through - Johannson chops down with the right jab; steps in close to carry a scooping left deep to Claire gut...blonde bunching forward "UH-H!" with body hurt. Scarlett hard-hearted: right hook lashes in under Claire's left elbow; short left hacks at Claire as Scarlett leans forward - her elbow in tight to her ribs on delivery. Claire slugged to ropes...Scarlett crowding in on blonde left side, looping her right arm over Claire's left to secure her. Scarlett snug - pinning Claire to ropes - scuffing her up with cheap left hands while tying up Claire's left. Danes reacting to slaps on her mouth, scrounging in her jugs, pumpings in her tummy - Scarlett just working snug technique until ref's break. Clever stuff - Scarlett has Claire wounded - vexing her along the apron - then jumping in to work the weird hold-and-hit routine off Claire's left side.

R7: Scarlett aggressive, up-tempo. She's keeping her lead (right) foot outside Claire's left - turning Claire counterclockwise. Scarlett's right hand is busy - slapping atop Claire's left or jabbing for Claire's left breast, or cuffing at Claire's hip. The coiled left hand at Scarlett's chest licks out - scoring to Danes' mouth in straight shots, or carving slightly wide to stroke Claire ear-to-chin on right side of blonde head. Danes frowning, grumpy...she's getting touched up stiff here, turned, frequently rocked - Scarlett shuts Claire out, puts her wobbly butt in a strong Johannson seventh.

R8: Same angles and approach for Scarlett, influencing Claire in counterclockwise circles around the ring. Johannson in control - feinting Claire, then scoring touches...Danes unhurt, but she's scuffing up, looking uncharacteristically confused through 8. Bell: Johannson with a snarky little smirk en route to her corner...she's feeling her oats going into the home stretch.

R9: Johannson stepping in off the right jab, carrying that shoveling left into Claire's tummy: blonde girl crying out, doubling up in as redhead takes command. Scarlett working Claire over with the short left uppercut to chin/cuffing left hooks to body - leaning in close to slop the left hand upside Claire's head. Danes staring, battered, stumbling in retreat, but down the stretch she firms, ripping back at the Johannson breadbasket with both arms thrashing! Scarlett's turn to bunch up hurt, then SHE'S slamming back...rare moment when both girls just lay in strong, let hands go, and swap it up toe-to-toe. Bell: fighters still tearing at each other - ref has to pull classy vixens apart like they're a pair of shrieking ingenues through 9.

R10: Claire turns puncher - stepping in with clubbing left/rights, then pumping two close-in rights to Scarlett's trembling tummy. Redhead backing up, trying to find the southpaw angle: Claire's pressure punches Scarlett out of her positions, cueing blonde pursuit. Johannson always off balance - just scrambling here - Claire chases redhead for a shutout, sending fight to the cards. Comes back UD10...DRAW...both girls immediately petition their backers for a fighting tie-break.

RULE: First girl to open up a 2 point gap, or stop the other outright is the winner.

R11: Claire's left side forward - Scarlett's right side forward...girls dipping in their stances, changing levels, trying to find scoring solutions. Virtually no effective contact as pocket-defence reigns supreme - edge goes to Scarlett on the basis of a single well-struck straight left that finds Claire's cheek with jarring force.

R12: Same again, only it's Claire penetrating with her straight right - scoring into Johannson's breasts early, her face late.

R13: Same look - Claire slightly better at the hunt-and-peck boxing...until Scarlett steals it late with power. Johannson ducking in under Claire's right - rolling out with a slashing left upside Claire's head...Danes stepping in fence post holes as crowd squeals in alarm. Danes able to reel into ropes rather than go down: she covers up earmuff just as Scarlett's hopping in. Johannson reaching her left out to touch at Claire's guard, measuring her, then RIPPING that right hook across to skid across Claire's hairline at bell.

R14: Nip tuck pocket boxing - girls bobbing/rolling in flat footed stances - trying to feint-and-dart-in with the power hand. All even going into the last minute - fighter's eyes SO intense with concentration. Scarlett with a head feint gets Claire to flinch: redhead right hand chops down at Claire's lips; Scarlett leans in to punch a hard straight left into Claire's mouth, breaking Danes' stance and sending her backwards. Bell sounds...Scarlett brightens even as Claire's expression goes blank...Scarlett Johannson's just nipped Claire for a razor thin UD14 sharpshooting victory.

AFTER: Faces say it all: Scarlett just beaming as her hand is raised; Claire aghast - looking scuffed up and vexed after 14 grueling rounds of nerve-wracking precision boxing. "I stared Claire down and made her blink!" Scarlett sums up in postfight. "I actually think the fight was more one-sided for me than the score indicated. If you watch the tape, you'll see I hurt Claire repeatedly, throughout the match. It wasn't just about controlling her - which I did very well: it was actually me doing damage and rattling her cage that set me apart." Scarlett! Scarlett! Now that you've beaten Claire, would you say the torch was passed from her to you in terms of skill-boxing supremacy? "You know - I think the torch WAS passed, but I think the fact that we went to a tie-break will give Claire some wiggle-room to believe she's still competitive. As we go forward however, I expect to beat her by ever-increasing margins, and that's going to settle the debate. One step at a time gentlemen!"
