Unified Welterweight Title

(Telek can be seen on perhaps the worst show on television, “The Immortal” opposite Lorenzo Lamas. Still, she’s a useful midcard welterweight)

Before: Team Landry appropriating the July 4th motif to bring in a Canuck “opponent”--event billed as Canada vs. United States, but make no mistake: this is all about getting Landry a high profile W, it’s fought in Vegas, Ali’s the big interview--Telek just happy to be here. Overlooked April a former Miss Canada with decent international amateur credentials, even fighting Landry once or twice as pageant paths crossed years back. Landry coming in at her heaviest since winning the undisputed Welter title--nobody carries the weight better, but it’s a fact that pundits make a make of. Side by side, Ali’s bronzed, broad shouldered physique still the stronger, harder looking--Telek relatively soft,  pale--she’s got Kelly Rutherford written all over her. Telek in beach volleyball style bikini--Canadian Maple leaf motif top (red and white), solid red bottoms--Landry in Beach-v ball style bikini--red and white striped top, star spangled bottoms. Landry pumped up at the instruction, takes a little run at Telek, bumping chests and sending the Canadian staggering backwards at the unexpected aggression as the pro-Landry crowd roars.

During R1: Landry out with hands low, rolling her fists at her stomach as she nimble-foots to her left, boxing behind her jab intent  on winning the first minute of every round. Mission accomplished as Telek squares up, gloves at her temples, alternating to the right at behind, left across her belly, bobbing and blocking as Landry dictates. Ali judging distance, gradually moves inside and gets satisfying smack out of Telek’s pale sides. April’s gut and back flesh jiggling as Landry tests for firmness downstairs. Telek shouldering up in the final minute, keeps her right taped to her cheek and takes advantage of a disrespectful Landry, chopping at the breasts and chin of the brunette with a sturdy hook to avoid the shutout.

R2: Landry opening insolent, hands low, looking to lean in on her front foot and poke away, but Telek surprises the American this round. Hard counter right hands catch Landry looking, follow up hooks have her actually retreating as April stays defensively responsible, chopping away at Ali’s beautiful face, Ali posing, dancing, mugging with her hands down--Telek all business and the Canadian is coring points, obviously unimpressed with Landry’s amateur crap, final minute, telek catches Landry leaning back with a straight right hand--Landry thinks it’s over and April nails her a fine left hook on the teeth and ALI IS HURT! Landry butt-wobbled as she stumbled into the ropes--Telek finishing the round strong with her head down, bashing right/left to the waist as Ali looks stunned at the bell.

R3: Corner reading Landry the riot act--reinforcing the idea of winning the first minute to set the table for the rest of the round. Landry pumped up and ready to go, but still with her hands low, thinking she can simply have her way, and Telek with her solid blocking defense, effective head movement and sharp through pedestrian punching has Landry on the retreat early. Ali gets her legs underneath her at the minute mark and starts to wheel left while pounding out that jab--it’s enough to make April defensive and Landry is able to keep her girl at the end of her punches to the bell.

R4: Landry dialing in the jab--hammering it between April’s mitts and putting the Canadian on her heels. Telek not getting off--she’s too defensive now and Ali steps it up. April bending forward at the waist, Ali turning her and burying LOUD lefts and rights in behind Telek’s elbows--April getting her teeth and getting hurt for the first time in the bout. Vintage Landry, moving well for a big woman, taking the body whenever April leans forward, jabbing and drilling right crosses whenever Telek tries to back off. Ali dogging April all around the ring--Canadian starting to look outclassed after all.

R5: Telek impertinent once again--takes the first minute with crisp punching out of her guard, biting her fists into Ali’s bra and putting an angry snarl on the champ’s face. Landry answers back in kind and what had been a good technical bout devolves into flat footed mauling. Girls taking turns lathering away--diving in with right crosses non the chin, pulling the comeback hook into cushy bras, plenty of shouldering pushing in between blasts as the girls get big on one another. Landry just too strong--her withering blasts to either side of April’s waist shut the blonde down by the final minute--Telek open-mouthed, really feeling it as Landry slams away at the bell.

R6: Perfect round for Landry, First minute--drill that jab and steer the blonde, break  her down from the ourtside. Second minute, work inside and PUNISH that midsection--HARD rights and lefts, always 2 punches--April cringing and folding forward, only t be shoulder-butted onto her heels and walked down by the copper-toned American. Telek opens up to defend herself, trading hooks with Landry and PROMPTLY takes a seat as Ali’s left banks off chin. April takes 8l but she’s looking shopworn--all Ali as Landry jabs her girl to the ropes, uses her left elbow and shoulder to shove and prop, then hook hard to the body as Telek sits there and takes it.

R7: Telek lumping up some, but still fighting--she jabs with the champ, momentarily confusing Ali, then stings the big brunette with a surprise right cross, turning Landry’s head and sending her sideways. Landry roaring back, eyes ablaze as she beats April stupid with a monster series of splashing hooks up the right side, then drops the short right hand straight down the middle to drop Telek to her backside again, April bleeding from a busted lower lip, eyes starting to glisten and on comes Landry. Girls slugging it up shoulder to shoulder, bumping and shooting with left shoulders setting up hooks and Telek starts to find a punching rhythm as she beat Ali to left hands repeatedly on the inside. Landry’s legs give a little shake and she steps put, left hand extended to keep Telek back and April dives in over the reaching limb with a crashing right hand--ALI GOES DOWN! Landry sprawled on the deck as the crowd gasps--champ is as hurt as most have ever seen her. Ali beats the count, but is RAGGED--April walking her down at the ropes as the bell sounds--both women staggery and vacant on their stools as trainer try to rub some life back into their charges.

R8: Who’s hurt more? April comes out the aggressor, cutting down the ring, shouldering up and she goes to work with little chopping hooks, doubling and tripling up, cudgeling Ali’s prize-winning jugs, tapping her slack jaw--Ali backing up and taking to the ropes looks like she’s sucking wind. Landry with her hands down, leans into the ropes to evade punches, comes back with the bounce to counter with lanky punches from her thighs, girls trade hooks, girls trade right hands and TELEK GOES DOWN! Head bashed hard to her the right, then to the left, mouthpiece shoots off her teeth and April jettisons to her back to land with a limp body, eyes closed, eyebrows arched high as she is OUT! KO8 Ali Landry.

After: Look is worth a thousand words as Landry draw a glove across her bruised mouth, glaring down at a girl who did some business against the most dominant champion in boxing. Telek comes to quickly, and is immediately gathered up for a woozy walk of shame--Ali waving with the back of her left hand while steering the stupefied blonde around the ring with the right hand behind April’s waist, Landry not training much for this fight, had to win it on sheer talent as April puts the fear of god into her brunette tonight. Ali not happy in post fight interviews that seem to stress how well April did, at one point snapping: “Hey--I won the damn fight you know!”
