Before: Peta fighting every few weeks, looks to add her first legendary notch on the belt with ex-SI queen Brinkley. Chris heavier and slower than in her prime, but stronger, and insiders thinks she’s more ring-savvy, calmer than in her youth. Good stepping stone opponent for developing Peta. Wilson in yellow and green track 2-piece (Aussie colours), Brinkley in mauve spaghetti strap sports top, blue stretch pants to the ankle.
During R1,2: Peta establishes effective aggression, getting off one-twos and spearing that awesome jab throughout. Brinkley holding her left across her body, right at her cheek, bobs at the waist, flicking little tummy jabs and looking to counter Wilson, time the jab. Christie slow starting, finding her rhythm, gives away the points.
R3: Nice round for Brinkley as she dips under Peta’s jab and rolls a looping right hand to test Wilson’s chin this round. Peta unaffected, but taking too many punches, and Brinkley effective at tying up after landing to get Wilson off her game.
R4: Christie sliding around Peta, making the youngster move her feet, and turning into nice wide right hands over Wilson’s jab to continue shining up Peta’s cheek. Midway through the round, youth is served as Wilson doubles up on the jab, and bangs home that stunning right cross, dropping Chris to her backside with a shocked expression, Brinkley takes 8, and folds to the ropes to take a savage berating. Peta smartly going to the body, grunts as she punches and Christie nearly folds to the mat. Wilson slowing things down, bodies up, palming up on Christie’s shoulders to push the big blonde back, then twisting into clubbing right hands to the body to buckle Brinkley’s knees. Beating to the bell as Peta slugs home the message.
R5: Peta back in control, but Brinkley doing some little things to stick around. Clinching after trading with Peta. Pulling Peta’s head down into clubbing uppercuts. Christy slows the bout to a crawl as the girls spend most of the round grappling and straining up top for punching room.
R6: Christy frustrating Peta with the holding, and gets the better of the youngster in cloying action. Falling in together. Brinkley hooks up Peta’s right arm. Swatting at Wilson’s face inside and wrestling her to the ropes. Peta complaining, but getting roughed up, as Brinkley continues to survive, if not distinguish herself.
R7,8,9: Peta dominating, jabbing Christie into the ropes, but whenever Wilson looks to bang, Brinkley is on her with a lunging clinch. Christie rarely getting off, but is landing enough right hand counters to avoid disqualification. Peta struggles gamely on, driving in with some nice straight rights to the ribs in these rounds.
R10: Brinkley’s plan was to keep it close and go for it late, and she surprises Peta with an up-tempo attack in this round. Peta covering up, blocking effectively, but midway through the round, Christie rocks her with determined wide right hands on the jaw. Wilson hurt, doesn’t look confident, and Christie scores a teeth-rattling right uppercut between the elbows to rock Peta’s head back, Still, Wilson barely takes a backward step, and by the final minute, walks Christie down and pounds her with lefts and rights to the arms and flanks to finish the stronger fighter at the bell, Unanimous decision Peta Wilson as crafty Christie goes the distance.
After: Brinkley fighting to survive rather than win, never a factor in the scoring, but Peta needs these kinds of fights in order to progress. Wilson will have to learn how to deal with the defensive clinch, as most opponents will try to use it on her in the future, and her slightly predictable attack left her available for Brinkley’s limited counter.
