BEFORE:
"Yes, I haven't boxed outside of New Zealand for awhile," says a stunning Lucy. "So, why now? Well, why not? This side of Righetti and Regan, there's no one at welter I wouldn't be even money or better against. Bell's my age and still getting good fights. Do I want to make another run? Maybe. Maybe not. But, I'm not done fighting. There are FCBA fights for me out there, and there's no reason I shouldn't take them."
"She's the queen, no question," says a stone faced Anna. "ANZ Boxing has been all about Lucy for quite some time now. We've been dancing around one another for a year. She's fighting over there. I'm fighting over here. There's lots of talk back home about who'd beat whom. It's past time we found out."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and thanks again to Michelle Trachtenberg for her commentary during the last fight, and welcome to our guest commentator for this one, fittingly, the lovely Yvonne Strahovski!"
Yvonne: "It's an honor, Jennifer, and please call me 'Vonnie'."
O'Dell: "You know both of these fighters fairly well and I'm sure our viewers would love to hear your take, but, first, how are you feeling about folks billing this as a battle for hegemony Down Under?"
Yvonne: "Well, I'm a little surprised. Apparently they've forgotten that Vonnie Strahovski is from Australia...and has an FCBA title to her credit. No disrespect to Anna or Lucy, but neither woman can make that claim. As for the fight, you have to make Anna a bit of a favorite. Lucy hasn't been in an FCBA ring in some time, and, while she's fought and won at home, the competition level here is a step up. But, I'm not impressed by Anna's chin. She's been taken out by Arterton and Cuoco, and neither of them can hit like Lawless. Lucy can take Anna out of here, and she just might do it."
O'Dell: "Well...THIS is interesting. That's "Power and the Passion" by Midnight Oil, and Anna's coming out first here!"
Yvonne: "Pretty classy. Showing the respect to Lucy by letting her come out in the championship position."
O'Dell: "Torv into the ring, drops the robe to reveal a blue and white bikini...and the 'Xena' theme blasts over the speakers and the crowd is roaring as here comes Lucy Lawless!"
Yvonne: "Lucy looking all business on the way down. I've met her several times. She's quite decent, really, but in the ring, well. She's Lucy Lawless..."
O'Dell: "And into the ring she climbs, takes off the robe, reveals a black bikini and she's clearly in great shape for this one, Vonnie..."
Yvonne: "Never doubted she would be. Always is."
O'Dell: "And the preliminaries come to an end, ladies touch them up, and here we go! Lucy using that long left jab, likes to come in behind that and work the body from what I've seen, Vonnie."
Yvonne: "Lawless is VERY strong. She's tough to the body. Can wear you down there. Of course, she's just as likely to end your night with that right hook."
O'Dell: "At the moment, though, not getting anything going. Anna maintaining distance, getting that jackhammer left going. Finding spots for the right hand. Showing Lucy angles and movement. Lawless getting off some, but not landing much..."
Yvonne: "And nothing at all landing clean for the brunette. Torv's a slick boxer, as we all know, and she's using those skills to good effect."
O'Dell: "Anna landing the jab here. Another. A third. Not hurting Lucy, but scoring well and there's the bell. No doubt about the first."
Yvonne: "Certainly Anna's. But we've got a long way to go."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "On to the second now, and Lucy more aggressive here, bobbing with the guard up, looking to get in tight."
Yvonne: "Good strategy. Lucy's strong. Can really hit. She wants to brawl in there, not box with Anna."
O'Dell: "And that's what she's doing, in close, thumping that body, working the flanks with hooks, tying up when Anna tries to get space, banging a hook home to the kidney with the right while she holds with the left. Torv retreats, gets a little space, sticks a jab, but Lucy works back in tight. To the midsection with a hook, another behind the elbow, shoving Anna back toward the ropes. Blonde getting smothered here."
Yvonne: "This is far from pretty, but it works. Lucy's scoring, got Anna off balance and out of rhythm."
O'Dell: "And that's the round. Looks like we're even through two."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third round getting underway, and Lucy taking a jab to get inside, going back to work in close, banging at the flanks with those hooks, shoving Torv back, using her strength to knock Anna off balance..."
Yvonne: "BIG RIGHT HOOK, LUCY!"
O'Dell: "She hurt Anna with that! Lawless a short hook and Torv rocked. Lucy back to the body, banging away at the midsection, forcing Anna into the ropes. Hard straight left snaps the blonde's head back. Good straight right to the head. Buries a hook to the belly. Lawless in total control here."
Yvonne: "This is why Anna's never going to be a top lightweight. She doesn't have the chin."
O'Dell: "Lucy's certainly testing it. Straight right lands again. Anna covering up, trying to ride this thing out. Lawless working the kidneys and the ribs. Snaps back the head with a solid left. There's the bell. Big round for Lucy Lawless!"
Yvonne: "Check the replay on that right hook. Lucy slams a left to the body, then sneaks the right over Anna's left glove. Big punch."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Back to live action in round four. Lawless moving in again, but Anna using her legs now. Jabbing and showing good movement. Landing from range. Lucy trying to cut the ring off, but Anna's not having any. Landing solid lefts, slips a big right. Nice hook counter. Torv back to open canvas. Landing that jab solid."
Yvonne: "Anna's got the range for sure, finding angles. Fitting the occasional right, but it's the jab she's scoring with."
O'Dell: "Lawless looking to land big, but she's short and late and...DOWN GOES LUCY! Lawless short on a right hand and Anna countered with a BOOMING cross! Lucy up at six, taking the eight count. A little wobbly, but the referee's going to let this go."
Yvonne: "Torv not looking to clean up. Happy to box and move."
O'Dell: "That's not how you'd handle this?"
Yvonne: "No, it isn't."
O'Dell: "Anna with a nice left, circling, keeping distance. Scoring with another left. That's the bell. Four in the books and Torv with the 10-8 round is back in front."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Round five now and Anna aggressive off the bell. Working that jab, advancing behind it, forcing Lucy backward for the first time. Lawless happy to back up, work off the ropes. Torv with a nice right. Lucy a left hook counter. Misses the follow up right. Anna aggressive. Banging at Lucy's high guard. Scoring with the left. Landing the odd right."
Yvonne: "Lawless looking for the big one here. She wants that right hook."
O'Dell: "Lucy bobbing the head. High guard. Fighting cagey. Landing the short hooks to the body. Willing to take Anna's jab for a chance at that big right hand. Torv lands a solid right as the bell rings ending round five. Anna in charge there."
Yvonne: "She certainly won the round."

Lawless/Torv Part II

ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Half way through now as the sixth gets underway. Nice combination by Torv there! Good left followed by a solid right to the head. Stopped Lucy in her tracks. Lawless trying to advance now, get in close again, but Torv denying, finding the head with a left, ripping a hard right to the body. Lawless resets, comes forward again. Takes a pair of left jabs for her trouble as Anna circles away."
Yvonne: "Lucy's getting picked apart out there."
O'Dell: "She most certainly is. She doesn't want to be out on the end of Anna's jab, but that's where she is. Torv rifling it home again and again. Lawless unable to answer. Short and late on everything as Anna's in firm control. BIG THREE PUNCH COMBINATION THERE! Lucy not hurt but stopped in her tracks again. Left and a straight right to the head, then a solid hook to the kidney. Lawless forward again. Eats a double pump jab. Bell rings. That was a BRUTAL round for Lucy."
Yvonne: "No question. Shut out completely."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Into the seventh now. Anna Torv's built a nice lead, and she's far from sitting on it. Right back to work behind that piston left jab. Banging it home, stopping Lucy. Following with a good right to the head there. Lawless giving a little ground here. Moving the head, being forced to the defensive."
Yvonne: "Lucy doesn't often fight as a counter puncher, but she had a bit of success doing it in the fifth."
O'Dell: "Anna lets loose with a flurry. Caught Lawless with a couple, but Lucy blocked the rest. Lawless with the guard up. No longer coming forward. Looking to counter. Wants that right hook. But Torv circling away from it. Doubles up on the jab. Lucy blocks the follow up right hand. Lawless retreating, now circling with Torv. Lands a left of her own. Eats a hard right in response. Lawless covers up as Anna bangs away at her arms and body. Torv slips a big hook, rips a counter to the kidney. There's the bell. Another shutout for Anna."
Yvonne: "Those last two rounds were hard minutes for Lucy. She's not getting anything done at all."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Eighth round underway and Anna NAILS Lucy with a left-right, snaps the brunette's head back with both punches! Lawless shakes it off, keeps coming forward, but Anna circles, jabbing, landing clean. Target practice right now for Torv. Lawless trying to get off but she can't. Anna showing her angles, using the legs, moving the head. Busy, busy, busy with those fists. Landing again and again."
Yvonne: "This is getting hard to watch. Lucy hasn't been in these last three at all. She's game. Still looking for the big punch. And that's what it's going to take at this point."
O'Dell: "This has to be demoralizing. Torv just landing almost at will. Constantly forcing Lucy to cover up. Lawless landing almost nothing at all. ANOTHER big right Anna. That's the bell. We're through eight and it's getting to be quite the lead for Torv."
Yvonne: "I've got it 78-73. Might be a point closer, but you've got to figure Lucy needs a knockout."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "Six minutes left for Lucy to get it as the ninth begins. Torv again working the jab from the outside. Lucy covers up. Anna moving in, but Lawless ties her up, bangs home a left hook to the body, shoves Anna off, whacks a right off her head. Torv back to circling. Lucy covering up in the middle of the ring as Anna looks to land from distance."
Yvonne: "Lucy baiting Torv into a clinch again, here. This is where Lawless has the advantage. Lands a good right there. Using her strength to get Anna off balance, working in close chippy for points. Torv should get back outside and box. Only bad things can happen for her in here at this point."
O'Dell: "Fighters tied up again and Lawless bangs the midsection, hooks the ribs. Anna gets her break, gets back to some space. Lands a jab. There's the bell. Lucy got that one with the close work."
Yvonne: "I agree, but the scorecards are moot for Lucy right now. She's got three minutes to stop Torv. Otherwise, she's going to come out second best."
ROUND TEN:
O'Dell: "Last round underway and Lucy coming forward looking for that big punch. Eats a jab, then a right hook. Covers up. Anna circles away. Lucy looking to close. Torv a three-punch volley to the head there!"
Yvonne: "Desperation stuff from Lucy now. She needs the big punch. She's game. Willing to take punishment to get it"
O'Dell: "Torv double pumps the jab...AND HURTS LUCY WITH A RIGHT HAND! LAWLESS WOBBLED. ALMOST WENT DOWN. AND ANNA LOOKING TO FINISH THIS TIME!"
Yvonne: "That punch would have done for a lot of lights...welters, too."
O'Dell: "Torv backing Lucy into the ropes, working the body as Lawless keeps the guard high. Anna digging into the belly and ribs, rips an uppercut that splits the gloves. Lucy shaken again, clinching. Anna punching out of it. Hook to the side of the head. Stinging right behind the left ear. Lucy just hanging on now, clinching, trying to pin Torv's hands. Anna hooks the belly, nails Lucy with a straight right. There's the bell. It's over. The two fighters embrace and head back to their corners. Guts and pride kept Lawless on her feet, but there's no doubt the winner by UD10 is Anna Torv!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "Anna, big win for you tonight..."
Anna: "Yes, it was. Lucy is a legend. And she can still fight. She's got power and she's the strongest woman I've ever been in with. She's dangerous, and she had me hurt. I've got loads of respect for her. But, I was better tonight."
Tess: "Folks have been saying a win in this fight would consolidate your control over boxing Down Under..."
Anna: "My goal isn't to be the number one fighter in ANZ. Right now it's to be the number one lightweight at Front Street...and then the number one in the world." |
