Foxfire Boxing in The BBU

(Results: Knowlesey; Writing: Archer)

Dani Harris is well-known among BBU fans and is greeted like the home town favorite in pre-fight. She is cheerfully confident and declares: “I feel like I among old friends here and I don’t want to let them down against Ellen Page. She’s a good kid, but I don’t expect to have too much trouble with her. I’ve been fighting for about 10 years now, inside the FCBA and out, and really, I feel my job to help Ellen develop as fighter by showing her how it’s done.”

For her part, Ellen Page, maintains a sweetly determined air: “Gosh, I can’t believe Dani Harris is 34--you SURE you’re not as young as me? Oh well, I do appreciate an older fighter like you being willing to help learn the sport. Selena Gomez helped me, too--I found out how much a like to win when I knocked her out. I sure hope you help me learn in the same way.”

“Don’t count on it, kid,” Dani says with a confident smile.

Fight night finds Harris and Page opening the “Foxfire in the BBU” card. Danielle comes to the ring in a Foxfire red bikini with brown trim (with an gold FF on the hip), red boots and red small gloves. Ellen in green bikini shot through with diagonal slashes of yellow at irregular intervals, black boots and black small gloves. Battle braids for both ladies.

During R1: Girls cagy in opening stanza, circling as they feel each other out with probing punches. Dani slowly begins to outbox Ellen and tries to move her back up against the ropes, but in a surprise move--Page able to move around first. Harris finds herself caught on the ropes as Ellen slings in the leather. Dani caught about the head by several bell ringing shots and has to cover up gloves-at-temples. She finally clinches to force a referee’s break. Dani looks miffed, but round ends before she can respond of Ellen’s move. Page shoots Harris a “gotcha” smile, Dani not amused.

R2: Fighters come out and Ellen Page again surprises Dani Harris, this time with a left hook to the side of the head. Dani blinks in a stunned surprise, then Ellen is swiftly upon her slinging more leather at head. Dani takes a hard right on the cheek and a left off the temple. HARRIS DROPS TO HER BUTT! Dani sits there looking astonished and rubbing her bruised cheek. Harris back up by 8 and frowning as fight resumes. Ellen rushes in but meets a solid defense from the veteran. Hard jabbing to body and face force Page to retreat in a ragged fashion, getting lit up by Harris counters as Dani gains control of the round at the end.

R3: Ellen not discouraged by Dani’s late counterattack in the 2nd, comes out guns blazing, trying her best to land knockout haymakers. Unfortunately for her, Dani able to block or duck most of this heavy leather and then counters with hard rights of her own. One connects straight into Ellen’s mouth, knocking her head back and freezing her for crucial seconds. Harris follows up with a flurry of lighting lefts and rights into Page’s face. ELLEN ON HER BUTT! Ellen Page knocked down near ropes and grabs strands to hoist herself up a dazed look on her face, shaking her head trying to clear it during mandatory 8. Harris waits patiently, thinks she sees victory as Ellen stands there swaying slightly at her approach. Danielle feints back to the head, but directs a barrage of punches into Ellen’s small body and surges forward to ram her back into the ropes. Then Dani loops in a crashing right over Ellen’s weak guard into her jaw. Ellen spins to the side and lands flat on her face. She pushes up, a plaintive look on her face, and somehow beats the count. Dani moves in fast to try to finish, but Page able to cover up and ride the storm out to the bell.

R4: Dani comes out thinking to finish up the woozy Ellen, but Page surprises her with a big left to the head early staggering Harris, though she manages to keep her feet. Page cautious now, does not rush in and when Dani comes forward, she demonstrates she now knows how to clinch and hold to her advantage. Ellen grows confident as Dani’s frustration becomes apparent, but she then shows her inexperience by trying to move forward herself and attack the veteran. Bad idea, Dani sees plenty of holes in the kid’s defense and moves nimbly to take advantage of them. Next thing Page knows, her butt is being backed into a turnbuckle and Harris is pumping hot leather into her tummy, breasts and sides. Ellen finally manages to clinch and hold to the bell, but she is unsteady moving back to her corner, while Dani walks back with firmer step.

R5: Both girls taking a breather in this round. Much clinching and holding by Ellen Page which largely thwarts Danielle Harris’ attempts at a steady body attack. Dani forced to settle for adding to the accumulated hurt on Ellen’s small body.

R6: Girls back in tight again, trying to swab at each other, while attempting to block the incoming. Ellen seems to gaining confidence as the minutes tick off. She manages to cuff Dani to the face was the round ends. Both fighters sweat soaked and dripping, but the older Harris seems to be breathing more heavily and slumps wearily on her stool for the break.

R7: Battle of attrition continues. Girls in close, punching, clinching, pushing and generally working each other over to the body. Not much mobility as they stand and deliver in a small area of the center ring. Ref keeps pulling them apart as he attempts to keep the action going, but it’s not entirely successful. Action-loving crowd starting to grow restless and a few boos are heard.

R8: Dani calls in the reserves and comes out hard and fast, trying to overwhelm Ellen off the bell. Ellen tries hard to spoil the attack with clinches, but Dani evasive and hits back with solid jabs to freeze the rookie in place. Then Dani swings a right hook to the Page jaw and DOWN GOES ELLEN! Page sprawls on the canvas, stunned, but she manages to get up to resume the action. Ellen’s legs trembling, butt wobbly, however Harris panting heavily now and punches are thrown by leaden arms and these lack the power to finish off her wounded opponent.

R9: Dani defensive, looking like she thinks she’s got this locked up and is content to Ellen attempt to go on the offense this round. When Page is able to work her way inside and land several good punches to Harris’s face, the veteran initially responds to being smacked around with a clinch-and-hold strategy of her own. Page keeps on attacking and Harris finally forced to take more effective counteraction by ramming several good uppercuts into Page’s little tummy. Rookie doubling forward and covering up herself as bell rings.

R10: Both girls seem to have shot their bolts by this point. They trudge out wearily and shuffle around midring. Not much leather being thrown now, but Dani is veteran enough to know she needs to keep Ellen hurting, unable to recover. A few well-placed body shots shake the rookie as the round progress, Final shot to the belly causes Ellen to lurch forward, her gloved hands on Harris’ shoulder for support. Dani smacks in a couple more rights and lefts to Ellen’s sides as the bell rings and Page slumps against her. Dani pushes her back as ref jumps in between them. Comes back a UD10 for Dani Harris.

After: Two weary fighters stand between ref as decision is announced. Ellen offers Dani her hand in congratulations. Dani accepts the offer and adds a hug of her own to the battered rookie.

“I admit I underestimated her, Ellen Page has a lot of spirit and if she improves her skills, she could become a real threat among us small punchers,” Dani says later.

“She was tough,” Ellen herself, “and she deserved the win, but I think I proved that I belong in with even veteran fighters. I’ll get better, just watch and see!”
