"Foxfire in the BBU" (Cardiff, Wales)
(Results: Knowlesey; Writing: Archer)
The main event of the card is former bantamweight champion Rachel McAdams who has crossed the Atlantic for her BBU debut against “Captain America: The First Avenger” actress Hayley Atwell. Atwell has just gotten started in celebrity boxing having a 1-1-0 record in the BBU, getting a decision in her initial bout vs. actress Rosamund Pike, but suffering a KO5 knockout against FCBA fighter Jill Wagner. After the Wagner loss it seems surprising she would take on former champion McAdams. As for Rachel, some skeptics say the Foxfire beauty is just looking for an easy win over an inexperienced newcomer. Rachel denies this motivation.
McAdams in an impish mood, takes note of their hair color in post-fight interviews: “It was the auburn hair. I can’t just stand by let some ordinary blonde or brunette ruin her debut. She at least deserves to have it spoiled by someone she is daring to think she could supplant me”
Hayley annoyed: “I never said anything about ‘supplanting’ her--not that it would be all that difficult. I follow her record. That championship run was a while ago and I don’t see much that impresses me lately. And if I want red-brown I’ll wear red-brown hair and she just learn to live with it! As for why I am fighting her, I still blame my loss to Jill Wagner on jet lag, I want this fight to prove I can beat the elite of the FCBA.”
“Feisty one, isn’t she?” Says Rachel, studying her opponent closely across the dais. “We’ll just have to see if she really belongs in a ring at this point with an ‘elite’ bantam like me.”
On fight night, the crowd is already fully warmed up by the undercard bouts and are looking forward eagerly to this fight. Rachel McAdams is in Foxfire red with brown trim bikini, hair in a ponytail braided with a red ribbon. Hayley is white bikini with a halter top bra. Hair pulled back in a simple ponytail. Hayley slightly (5’6 ½ to 5 5 ½) taller than McAdams, who seems to find this amusing. Hayley tries to be stoic, but flickers of annoyance keep coming to her face.
During R1: Hayley moves confidently to mid ring to engage Rachel. She probes the veteran with various punches looking for openings. Rachel coolly defensive behind a high guard, shifts gears with a jab to bring Atwell’s advance to a surprise halt as McAdams leather bites into her belly. Guard drops down to cover the midsection, Rachel jabs straight into the Hayley’s mouth, quickly followed swatting left/swatting right to cheeks. Atwell’s guard goes up to cover her face and McAdams drives uppercuts into flanks and sides. Hayley seems bewildered as McAdams works her over top to bottom, always one punch ahead of Atwell’s guard. Hayley hunched over, gloves at her temples trying to ride this out. Rachel steps in close trying to ram uppercuts under and up. Hayley’s corner screaming: “CLINCH!” The battered Brit finally clinches and buys herself a few moments until ref’s break, but no sooner do they resume than Rachel sends a right hook crashing into the rookie’s mouth, splitting her lip and sending her stumbling to the canvas. Rachel retreats crisply to neutral corner as Hayley struggles to her feet in time to beat the count. Split lip sending a trickle of crimson down her chin to drip on the white of her bikini top, she looks stunned, but insists to ref that she wants to go on. Hayley tries to look determined as Rachel closes in. She manages to block the first McAdams’ punches, but crafty Rachel gets in another solid right to the jaw. Hayley staggers to the ropes. Rachel follows, but before she can get in any more, the bell rings and ref jumps between them to cease the action. Hayley clutches top rope for several moments to clear her head then makes her way unsteadily back to her corner. Her first professional round has been a hurtful learning experience for Hayley Atwell.
R2: Rachel comes out with a cold look on her face. She doesn’t seem pleased that Hayley is still standing,. Hayley approaches McAdams cautiously trying to out-think where the relentless veteran will strike. Caution doesn’t help as Rachel feints at the head and rams two hard left uppercuts deep into Atwell belly meat. Hayley lets out a groan and doubles over, dropping to the canvas on all fours. Hayley plainly hurting but shows courage in getting to her feet by 7 and resuming the contest. Rachel showing rookie no mercy, as she then fakes her to the belly, but smashes a left hook to the cheek. Hayley stumbles awkward back on her heels, Rachel steps with her putting a couple of nasty little uppercuts into Atwell’s bra cups, then ripping a right hook to the jaw. ATWELL GOES DOWN AGAIN! Hayley lands on her back near the ropes, she ropes over and uses the strands to pull herself back to her feet. Her face is now badly swollen and her eyes glassy, but again she insists to the referee she wants to go on. Ref waves Rachel in, but before McAdams can do any more damage, the round ends and Rachel coldly turns her back as Hayley is even more unsteady getting back to her stool.
R3: Hayley comes out with a desperate look as she heaves wild punches at Rachel hoping to land something that will turn this fight around. Bad rookie move as Rachel bobs and weaves to dodge the would-be haymakers and jab wickedly into Atwell’s battered face. Shots re-open that split lip and now crimson leaks from Hayley’s nose. Hayley driven to the ropes and Rachel goes to town smacking the rookies face to and fro as Atwell’s knees and thighs tremble. Rachel smiles grimly and moves Hayley away from the ropes before launching a BOOMING right hook across Hayley’s mouth, snapping her head around in a spray of blood and sweat. Then she topples backwards to land with a crash, laying there spreadeagled and barely twitching. It’s OVER as ref waves it off. KO3 demolition job by Rachel McAdams.
After: Rachel looks on with interest as Hayley is brought around on her stool. Then she tells the press: “I really don’t know why I was so hard on her. Just something about the way she came out in the first--didn’t she KNOW she fighting RACHEL MCADAMS? I guess she knows now.”
Once Hayley is brought around, Rachel strolls over to the now humbled rookie who looks up at her with wide-eyes, clearly fearing she is about to endure post-fight humiliation. Instead, Rachel leans down and places her forehead against Hayley‘s so they are looking intently in each other‘s eyes.
“On my third fight in the FCBA, a veteran named Jessica Alba spent 10 rounds beating the stuffings out me. It could have broken me as a fighter, but it didn‘t. I found that I had the courage and will be win so that I could come back from that loss. Let‘s see if you can come back from this one.”
“You--you ever fight Jessica again?” Hayley asked through her painfully swollen lips.
“Oh yes--and I beat her. So, if you ever feel like trying me again, I’ll try to accommodate you,” Rachel said. “Though I warn you, I am much better fighter than Alba.”
“I’ve seen the rankings,” Hayley said with a faint, though hurting smile.
Rachel smiled back and stood up. She gave the battered Hayley a nod and then went back to her own corner, her arms raised in victory as the crowd cheered. Hayley watched her go in a mixture of awe, envy and the spark of a dream that some day SHE would defeat the auburn-haired Canadian.
