BEFORE:
"I've watched plenty of video on her," says a hard-eyed Neve Campbell. "She can fight. She's slick. She can go rounds and out-point you. I'm not taking her lightly. Not at all."
"The FCBA is all about opportunities," says Amanda, shaking her head. "Some get them and some don't. I never did. But, maybe I will now. If Julie Benz can make a move at bantam at 39, why not me? I can beat Neve. And, when I do, just call me the brunette Julie Benz."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and we move from welters to bantams and that's 'Brighter Than Sunshine' by Aqualung I hear and that's Amanda Peet's cue. Peet climbing into an FCBA ring for the first time in seven years...drops the robe and reveals a bright white bikini."
McCarthy: "Not a bad body. Nothing special, of course, but it'll be the best body in the ring during THIS fight..."
O'Dell: "And, speaking of bodies, that's 'One Hit To The Body', by the Rolling Stones and here comes Neve. And, while she makes her way into the ring, Mac, what's your take on this fight?"
McCarthy: "Well, Campbell OUGHT to be the favorite. I'M going out and fighting a pile of Hall of Famers in one night and SHE'S fighting a woman who hasn't fought in seven years..."
O'Dell: "Neve into the ring, drops the robe, black bikini. Is this tonight's Front Street uniform?"
McCarthy: "It's what all the dancing hookers are wearing this season..."
O'Dell: "And there's the bell. Amanda moving and circling. Working the jab. Neve looking to close. Wants to get to the body, of course."
McCarthy: "Peet's got the blueprint to beat Campbell. I'm sure she's seen the Berry fight a hundred times..."
O'Dell: "And that's Amanda's style. She's a boxer. Quick hands. Technically sound. Lands the left there. Neve ducks a right hand counter, hooks the ribs. Amanda circling away. Resets. Straight left lands. Neve hooks the ribs again and Amanda moves right again. Peet using the legs well here. Neve stalking. Nothing much in it at the moment and..."
McCarthy: "Peet with a right hand! That stopped Neve in her tracks!"
O'Dell: "That came out of nowhere! A right hand lead caught Neve coming in! Amanda letting the hands go! A flurry of punches landing. Neve covering up, clinching, Amanda bouncing free. Sticking the jab, circling, looking for an opportunity to land the right, but Neve cautious as the bell rings ending round one. It was even for awhile, but..."
McCarthy: "No question Amanda won the round with that work in the last minute. Let's check the replay here of that right hand. Amanda's led with the left the entire round and Neve's anticipating it, leaning left as she moves forward and BAM! There's the right lead! Got her attention for sure."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Back to live action in the second, and we're back to the familiar roles. Amanda working the outside, boxing, and Neve stalking. Campbell very careful here. Wary of that right hand. Peet getting off with the left, slipping right, away from Neve's power. Campbell getting the occasional body shot in, but cautious. Getting outworked."
McCarthy: "Amanda's in control of this round, Jenny. She's dictating pace. Moving well. Keeping Neve off with the jab. Neve's being led around like she's got a ring through her nose, which, frankly, might improve her appearance!"
O'Dell: "Peet with a nice left-right. Takes a hook to the kidney from Neve. Follows with a left to the side of the head. Scoots right, out of range. Campbell stalking carefully. Amanda keeping her at bay with the left. That's the bell. And that's Peet's round."
McCarthy: "Two straight for Amanda!"
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Round three starting now and it's again Amanda looking for space and Neve stalking, looking to close. Peet lands a left and another, circling away as Neve moves forward. Campbell trying to work the body. Landing in spots, but it's all one-punch stuff as Peet's moving well. Sticking and getting out of there."
McCarthy: "Amanda's really doing an excellent job of boxing Neve. Negotiating the distance she needs. Not going to stand in there and slug with her."
O'Dell: "Never a good idea, though SOME folks have tried it. Peet circling off that jab. Stops. Pops. AND GOES DOWN! OH, CAMPBELL WITH THE RIGHT HOOK TO THE LIVER!"
McCarthy: "Amanda on her knees. Needs to get up. Count at six! Get up! Seven...eight...she's on her feet! Peet beats the count!"
O'Dell: "Takes the eight from the referee and on comes Neve. Amanda covering up as Campbell goes to work on the body and there's the bell ending the round. No time for clean up for Campbell, but with one big hook, she's evened the cards."
McCarthy: "Take a look at the replay here. Watch Amanda stick out the left jab, take a step forward looking for a right and Neve buries the right hook. Peet survived it though, and we're even through three."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Back to live action in the fourth and Neve looking to follow up. Moving forward, cutting off Peet, banging to the body, working her back toward the ropes."
McCarthy: "Amanda's legs aren't back and Neve's taking advantage. Peet can't slip away. She's too stationary. You don't want to just stand in front of Neve!"
O'Dell: "No, that wouldn't be smart to do. VOLUNTARILY, anyway. But Amanda doesn't have much choice. She's trying to bang back, but Neve crouching, working forward, leathering that body. Amanda out of room, trapped on the ropes, and Neve's bodying up, making her take weight, ripping hooks into her flanks. Peet trying to tie up, but Campbell shoulder's free, rips a hook into the kidney, one into the ribs, another behind the elbow. Peet getting mugged here..."
McCarthy: "The referee needs to force a break!"
O'Dell: "Not going to happen. Neve punches free. Rips a left hook to the head, then a right to the belly and that's the bell. All Neve Campbell in the fourth."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Round five underway as the bell rings and Neve is right after Amanda. Peet looking to stick and move, but Campbell cutting the ring off, banging to the body, heavy, thick shots."
McCarthy: "Amanda doesn't want any of that. She's not built to slug to the body with Neve..."
O'Dell: "Not many bantams are, Mac. Peet wincing in pain as Neve digs a hook to the ribcage. Amanda circling away behind her jab, but Neve's cutting the ring off again, going body. Right hook to the ribs, left to the kidney, shovel hook to the belly! DOWN GOES AMANDA! Big series of body shots from Neve sends Peet to her knees!"
McCarthy: "She's getting up! Amanda's getting up at six!"
O'Dell: "She takes the mandatory eight, nods that she's ok to go, and the referee waives Neve forward. Campbell walks through a jab, bangs a hook to the body, bodying Amanda back into the ropes, ripping heavy shots to the flanks. Peet covering up, tying up, can't get out of there. Campbell not head hunting at all. All body work. You can hear the thuds as glove meets body. There's the bell! Another great round for Neve Campbell, who's building a nice lead, Mac!"
McCarthy: "Check the punch that put Amanda down. Neve cutting her off, trapping her against the ropes. Bangs a right hook home, follows with a left, and here comes that shovel hook, right on the belly button and down goes Peet! Amanda got up, though, and she's still in this fight!"

ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Round six now and Sobieski back to that big left jab. Ashley trying to come forward again, but being preempted now. Leelee's got the range, doubling, tripling up on the jab, forcing Ashley backward and out of her stance."
McCarthy: "Newbrough getting shelled here. Can't get off. Leelee's being very patient. Looking to fit rights in. Working that left."
O'Dell: "Ashley short with a left hand. Being forced back out of range again. Leelee lands the jab, snaps back Newbrough's head, digs a right hook to the body. Lets the hands go! Ashley covering up as Leelee lands a three-punch flurry to the head. Newbrough not hurt, but those all scored."
McCarthy: "Ashley needs to get moving again. Leelee's in rhythm here."
O'Dell: "Certainly is. Ashley rocked backward with another straight left. Leelee advancing behind the left hand. Newbrough giving ground. Covering up as Leelee lands another left-right, and there's the bell. Dominant stuff for Sobieski!"
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Seventh round now and Sobieski's built a nice lead here, Mac."
McCarthy: "Sure has, and she's done it just like she's doing it now. Using that big left jab from a flat-footed stance. Banging Ashley around, forcing her backward. Newbrough unable to answer, being preempted, forced out of range. Short on everything."
O'Dell: "Leelee banging the left home. Working Ashley back toward the ropes, digging a hook to the body. Newbrough trying to tie up, but Leelee shoves free, walks her back, slams a left into the kidney. Bangs a right hook to the head. Newbrough hooking body herself, but Leelee's backed her against the ropes and she's banging punches against Ashley's raised guard here, hooking the belly and the flanks, pounding away all big. Ashley covering up. Leelee snaps her head back with an uppercut, and there's the bell."
McCarthy: "Great round, Sobieski. No question she was in total control for all three minutes. My card shows 69-65 right now. Long way for Ashley to come back."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "And that comeback needs to start now, and Ashley knows it. Getting off first off the bell. Landing a couple of nice left jabs. Slipping left away from Leelee's answering left jab, slinging a hook to the body, ducking a right hand counter. Newbrough landing the left again. Sobieski grazes Ashley with a left jab, takes a hook to the kidney in response."
McCarthy: "This is good stuff from Newbrough. Being aggressive, holding her ground, moving her hands."
O'Dell: "Leelee trying to get the jab working, but Ashley's not having any. Slipping and countering, showing just a bit of angle, hooking the ribs, frustrating the bigger blonde. Nice hard left for Ashley. Leelee counters with a right hook to the body, but Newbrough slips a follow up left, and lands a double up jab."
McCarthy: "No quit in Newbrough, Jenny. Good right hand there! Leelee hooking the body, but Ashley scoring again with the jab. That's the bell and Newbrough's got the round."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "So, Mac, two rounds to go, can Ashley win this thing without a knockout or a big round?"
McCarthy: "Well, I had one even and I've got her down three. If the judges gave her that one and she wins the next two? Could be OT. But, if I were Ashley, I'd be going for a KO here."
O'Dell: "Ashley out aggressive again here in the early going, but Leelee's landing that jab in the face again. Made a little adjustment between rounds it looks like. Timing that shuffle step to the left Ashley was using. That's what Jewel was talking to her about between rounds..."
McCarthy: "Like Jewel knows anything about boxing..."
Tess: "Says the woman who's fighter still hasn't won a fight..."
McCarthy: "SHUT UP, WALMART! WHO TURNED HER MIC ON???"
O'Dell: "Leelee using that piston left to back Ashley up again. Newbrough firing back, but not effective. Not in proper position. Short on everything again. Leelee fits a good right that got Ashley's attention. Another. Newbrough covers up as Leelee goes to the body. Sobieski banging at the ribs, the arms, the kidneys. Walking Ashley back to the ropes again. Left uppercut sends the sweat flying!. Ashley tying up, trying to slip free. Leelee lathering the lats. There's the bell, and that's all Sobieski."
ROUND TEN:
O'Dell: "On to the tenth now, and, Mac, Newbrough needs a knockout..."
McCarthy: "Definitely. She's down 88-84 on my card. Could be a point closer, but that doesn't matter. If this goes the distance, Sobieski's getting her hand raised..."
O'Dell: "And if there's any justice, it'll be the left, because there it is again! Straight left hand. Flat-footed stance. Got the range and landing like clockwork. Big, lusty punches. Moving Newbrough back, preempting any counters, fits a right to the side of the head. Ashley giving ground, being forced back to the ropes, covering up. Leelee going body. Hooking those ribs and lats, briging the guard down, rifling a left to the face that snaps back the head. Newbrough in survival mode now. Covering up and taking it. Leelee laying a beat down on her. Ashley standing up to it well, but clearly discouraged..."
McCarthy: "Sobieski could cruise here, but she isn't. She's imposing will. That's what you have to do if you want to be a champion."
O'Dell: "And there's the bell. Nice, classy stuff as the fighters embrace here. Not going to be any doubt about the scores. 98-93. The winner by UD10 is Leelee Sobieski."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I'm in the ring with Leelee Sobieski, and, Leelee, pretty dominant effort for you tonight..."
Leelee: "We had a good fight plan. Ashley is better than people think, and she showed that. She's got heart and she can fight. She's going to win some fights in the FCBA at both light and welter. But, like I said before the fight, she wasn't going to win tonight. Because, no disrespect, she's good, but I'm just better." |
