"I can fight," says Elodie, eyes flashing. "I've lost many more than I've won, but I've got new management now. I've been competitive against good fighters like Clarkson and Saldana. But I know that's not good enough. I have to prove I can beat girls like that. I CAN. And I will beat Seyfried."
"Poison," Amanda says, shaking her head. "She's poison for me. That's what they're saying. Who beats Seyfried? Slick boxers like Glau, Witherspoon, and Harnois. And Elodie's a slick boxer. Well. Not tonight. It's time for me to prove I can handle girls like Elodie. And that's exactly what I'm about to do."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and..."
McCarthy: "What kind of music is THAT?"
O'Dell: "That would be 'De L'eau', Elodie's first hit..."
McCarthy:"'Yellow'? I though Cold Play did that?"
O'Dell: "Not 'Yellow', 'De..' Seriously? Bob Beattie? Dick Button? Anybody?"
McCarthy: "What are you TALKING about?"
O'Dell: "I'm not sure anymore, but Elodie's in the ring and she's helped off with the robe to reveal a purple bikini. And there's 'Mama Mia' and here comes Amanda Seyfried! While she makes her way to the ring, let's get J-Mac's take on the fight while I call Lee Grosscup on my cell..."
McCarthy: "Who's Lee Rosebud? Didn't he sell sleds or something?"
O'Dell: "Look at me, Mom. Hall of Fame..."
McCarthy: "ANYway, I think Amanda's own pre-fight analysis was spot on. Seyfried has problems with boxers, and Frege, for all her flaws, is a very good boxer. I think she's the favorite tonight."
O'Dell: "Amanda disrobes to reveal a pink bikini, the ladies get their instructions, and, here we go! Seyfried right after Elodie, walking right through a couple of left jabs to whack at the body with a right hook. Elodie backs and circles, looking for space. Amanda chasing, lands a left, misses a right hook...BIG RIGHT HAND COUNTER FREGE! Elodie hurt Seyfried with that one, Mac!"
McCarthy: "Great counter, and she's looking to clean up!"
O'Dell: "Frege lands a left, hooks the head with the right. Amanda covering up. Elodie with a flurry, lands a couple solid. OH! RIGHT HAND COUNTER SEYFRIED AND FREGE IS HURT!"
McCarthy: "Elodie got careless trying to finish!"
O'Dell: "And Amanda making her pay! Seyfried with a right left and Elodie stumbles backward. Seyfried digs body. Frege lands a big right! Amanda right back with a hard right of her own! Both girls stumbling and sloppy, firing bombs. Both landing hard shots to the head, missing wild. BELL! End of the first and what a round, Mac!"
McCarthy: "Certainly was, but Seyfried won it. And Frege can't win this fight brawling like that. She needs to box."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Round two underway and Seyfried stalking Elodie. Frege backing and circling. Amanda pouring in to work the body, chopping meat at the flanks. Frege slaps out a jab, looks for space..."
McCarthy: "Frege looking very tentative. Kind of spooked, Jenny..."
O'Dell: "Seyfried crowding, landing hard to the body. Winging punches. A little wild. Missing more than she lands. But what she lands is effective. BIG RIGHT UPPERCUT! Frege wobbled by that right! Seyfried lets the hands go! Lands a hard left hook, overhand right, straight left, right hook. DOWN GOES ELODIE! FREGE POUNDED TO HER KNEES!"
McCarthy: "Nasty flurry by Seyfried. But Elodie's going to make it up at seven!"
O'Dell: "Referee gives her the eight count. Waives Amanda forward. Seyfried HAMMERING to the body as Elodie keeps the guard high. Frege swaying on the ropes as Seyfried pounds the flanks. Uppercut Amanda! Wobbles Elodie again. Frege just hanging on as Seyfried goes to town. There's the bell. Big round Seyfried!"
McCarthy: "Let's check the big punch here. Seyfried sensing that Elodie isn't doing anything. Just starts letting punches go. Throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Misses with a left hook here, but watch the follow up uppercut. BAM! That loosens Elodie's knees and sets up the flurry that put her on the canvas."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Back to live action and Amanda coming forward, maybe looking to finish. Elodie gives ground. Sets up against the ropes. Going to work from the pocket. Amanda sticking a jab out there, looking to set up a right hand, but Elodie is dodging and slipping, blocking and deflecting. Amanda unable to land anything clean as Frege's got a little rope-a-dope going here..."
McCarthy: "Seyfried getting a little frustrated. Elodie plenty slick. But. Amanda IS scoring, and Frege isn't..."
O'Dell: "Good point, Mac. Seyfried missing more than she's landing. Can't line Elodie up. But Frege's almost completely defense. Not busy enough to win the round..."
McCarthy: "And Seyfried isn't playing George Foreman to her Ali. She's not wearing herself out. She's under control. Finding spots. Fighting with good discipline."
O'Dell: "And there's the bell, and that's another round for Amanda. She's building a lead, Mac..."
McCarthy: "I've got it 30-26. Nice lead early."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth round underway, and Elodie back to the ropes. Amanda back to work trying to collapse the pocket. Seyfried working to the body some. Elodie, slipping and dipping, dealing with almost everything up high. Sticks a jab. Blocks a right. Stings Seyfried with a hard right hand counter. Amanda responds by digging to the body."
McCarthy: "This is a more aggressive Elodie. She's scoring some."
O'Dell: "Frege slaps another left home. Amanda bangs a right off her gloves. Elodie counters with a straight right. Seyfried hooks the body. Lands a left jab. Seyfried Elodie blocks the right. Seyfried ducks the right hand counter, digs a left to the body. That's the round. Pretty even, Mac?"
McCarthy: "Yeah. Called that one a draw. Makes it 40-36 for Seyfried, but fairly effective stuff from Elodie. She might just have found something."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth of a scheduled ten begins and Elodie again giving ground, slips back against the ropes and works from the pocket. Seyfried back to work in front of her. All about pressure. Elodie making her miss with the right, Seyfried lands the left to the body. Frege slips another right hand. Amanda lands the jab. Elodie with a slapping left. Seyfried hooks to the midsection. Amanda getting busier here, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Sure is. Elodie isn't getting off enough. She's making Amanda miss, but not making her pay for doing it. Seyfried is much busier."
O'Dell: "Sure is. Lands a good left right there. Frege slips the right, dips under a left. Scores with a right hand, but Seyfried bangs a couple to the body. Elodie high with a left hand. Seyfried lets the hands go. Threw four or five there. Might have landed one clean."
McCarthy: "Keeping Elodie at bay, though. Seyfried can't get Frege, but she's keeping Elodie on defense."
O'Dell: "That's the bell, and Seyfried's going to get that one as well."

ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "We are now into the sixth, and the pattern has fully developed. Seyfried coming forward, Frege forming the pocket along the ropes. Amanda in control but aggressive, throwing leather. Elodie making her miss. Bobbing, weaving, ducking, blocking. Slick, classy stuff. But it's Seyfried who's scoring. Getting points with her forays to the body."
McCarthy: "Seyfried fighting smart here. Just lowering the head and pouring leather. She's getting points just for the work, but she knows she's missing a lot upstairs. She's making sure of the rounds with the body shots."
O'Dell: "Frege countering with a right-left. Seyfried lands a nice little left hook. Elodie blocks the follow up. Frege ducks a left, slips a right. Lands a left jab. That's the round, and another for Amanda, Mac?"
McCarthy: "Absolutely. Through six I've got it 60-54. Amanda's getting close to running and hiding with this thing."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Seventh round underway, and here we go again. Seyfried coming forward, Elodie retreats to the ropes, sets up in the pocket. Seyfried misses a hook, Frege a good left. Amanda's right dodged, Elodie lands again. Good counter punching from Frege, Mac!"
McCarthy: "Seyfried co-operating. She keeps pushing the action, keeps throwing leather, and, for the first time, Frege making her pay for the misses."
O'Dell: "Elodie a nice two-punch counter! Slipped a right hand and came back with a sharp jab and cross! Seyfried not finding anything but air, shoulder and glove right now, and Elodie picking her apart from the pocket! This is the best stuff we've seen from the French beauty all night!"
McCarthy: "Sure is, Jenny! Good right hand counter there. Seyfried maybe head hunting too much. Might want to go back the body and score some, because Elodie's got the scoreboard spinning!"
O'Dell: "Seyfried lands a grazing left and another combination for Frege! The right snapped Amanda's head back as the bell rang, and Elodie has by far her best round of the fight!"
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Seven in the books, three to go as the bell rings for the eighth. Seyfried undeterred by Elodie's success last round, moving right at her again. Frege gives ground, sets up in the pocket. Seyfried misses a left, high with a right. Frege counters with a right hand lead, bangs in a left hook, ties up Amanda as Seyfried tries to go body. The referee breaks. Amanda jabbing. Can't find Elodie. Frege land a right over the jab. Amanda missing another left...OH, BOOMING RIGHT ELODIE. THAT SHOOK SEYFRIED!"
McCarthy: "Perfect counter punch! Perfect!"
O'Dell: "Frege lands a left. Seyfried still throwing leather even though she's clearly shaken. Elodie picking her apart from the pocket. Landing three or four for every one Amanda manages..."
McCarthy: "See, this is poor corner work. Seyfried's up at least four points, probably five, and she's still forcing the action against a girl who clearly just wants to counter! If Seyfried were MY fighter, I'd have her back into the middle of the ring and stand there! If Frege wants to lay on the ropes, let her!"
Tess: "Says the woman whose fighters are 0-for-LIFE..."
McCarthy: "I'm WARNING YOU, WALMART..."
O'Dell: "Elodie snaps back Amanda's head with a left-right-left. Seyfried lands a glancing left, takes a SOLID right in response. Elodie having this all her own way as the bell rings and Frege's won two rounds in a row."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "Well, Jewel had some advice for Amanda between rounds, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Probably about hair styles or something. Kilcher knows nothing about fighting..."
Tess: "Says the woman whose fighters are 0-for-LIFE..."
McCarthy: "I SWEAR TO GOD, WALMART..."
O'Dell: "Where have you GONE, Dandy Don. The ninth round is underway, and, for the folks at home, I'm talking about the fight IN THE RING. I've lost track of rounds in the other one. Seyfried again chasing Elodie to the ropes, and she works body. Digs into those ribs and that midsection. Frege tying up, holding. Referee breaks. Elodie lands a left, but Seyfried lets the hands go! Didn't land much clean there, but she forced Elodie to shell up. Frege lands a left. Seyfried back to the body. Scores to the kidneys."
McCarthy: "This is what I said Amanda needed to get back to two rounds ago. She can't just head hunt. Frege's too quick and slick. She's got to score to the body."
O'Dell: "Seyfried busy. Again, not landing much clean, but preempting Elodie, keeping her defensive. Not allowing those counters that scored so many points for the French beauty in the seventh and eighth. Elodie lands a jab. Seyfried throws a four-punch flurry. A couple of glancing shots land. She digs to the lats as the bell rings. Seyfried in that one, I think."
McCarthy: "Agreed, Jenny. I'm showing 88-83. May be a point closer, but, either way, Frege needs a knockout to win this thing."
ROUND TEN:
O'Dell: "Nine chapters written, and here comes the tenth. Amanda forward, Elodie backward. Sets up shop at the ropes. Seyfried missing a left, right hand deflected. Frege lands a good left, ties up Seyfried as she tries to go body. Referee breaks. Seyfried lets loose a flurry, nothing but air, glove and shoulder. Elodie counters. Solid left-right, then ties up again."
McCarthy: "I'm telling you, Seyfried should be standing in the center of the ring..."
O'Dell: "Amanda trying to locate with the jab. Can't. Elodie counters over with a solid right, hooks the ribs with the left. Ties up. Referee breaks. Seyfried getting the worst of things here. Frege effective in the pocket. Lands solid again. Seyfried lands to the belly. Elodie clinches..."
McCarthy: "Not going to matter, but Frege's picking Amanda apart this round..."
O'Dell: "That's the bell. And Elodie certainly got the tenth, but, as you say Mac, it won't matter..."
McCarthy: "Coming back 97-93. The winner by UD10 is Amanda Seyfried."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "Thanks, Jenny. I've got tonight's winner, Amanda Seyfried. Big win for you tonight..."
Amanda: "Sure was, Tess. Big test against the kind of fighter that's given me problems in the past. I needed to pass it. There's a little competition here in Philly, you know? I've got two of the best young prospects in the FCBA, not just in my division, but in my own stable. I need to produce if I'm not going to become the third option around here. And, trust me, that's not in the cards." |
