Ladies gentlemen the main event is here. On the line tonight, the AWUBA Lightweight Title.
Please welcome to the ring, fighting out of the blue corner, weighing in at 132lbs, the AWUBA Lightweight Champion….Jennifer Hawkins.
And her challenger this evening, in the red corner, weighing in at 132lbs, …. Abbie Cornish
Kylie: Both girls looking focused for this. We won’t have a chance to talk to them beforehand due to the nature of the fight. Danni any last minute comments?
Danni: Only to say how fantastic it is to have Jennifer and Catherine commentating with us tonight. Really looking forward to this one.
Kylie: Prediction?
Danni: I think Hawkins will retain her title.
Kylie: Well I think Abbie has been building for this. Jen has had a shorter preparation and I think that may have an effect on the result.
Round 1
Danni: Cornish goes straight after Hawkins, leading with the jab, then backing away and dancing around. Hawkins guard high, measuring her jab, thumps Cornish to the shoulder keeping the distance. Cornish right jab finds the mark, followed by the left, Hawkins rattled but resets herself. Cornish shimmys left and hooks the midsection. Hawkins returns fire, Cornish ducking and putting the UPPERCUT right on Hawkins chin. Hawkins unstable, as Cornish attacks the body with quick hands.
Kylie: Great start from Cornish. Right in there cleaning up on Hawkins abs and chest. Hawkins giving some back now with hard shots to the chest, Cornish brushing it off, and jabs bounce off Hawkins cheeks. Cornish stepping right and collecting the RIGHT HOOK TO CHIN, Hawkins stumbles to the ropes covering up hurt. Cornish looks to finish, heaving hooks into Hawkins rib cage. Hawkins leaning forward into crisp Cornish uppercuts at the bell.
Danni: Great start Cornish. She has the champ in all sorts of trouble early. Hawkins rattled by the jab in the first 30 seconds.
Garner: Jennifer hasn’t had a chance to show her speed yet. She probably needs to get out of the close exchanges and work the ring.
Cat Bell: 10-8 Abbie so far. She dominated that round.
Round 2
Kylie: Cornish on the move. Hawkins retreating, covering up. Cornish throwing a barrage at her defence. Hawkins soaks it up, backing away. Cornish again slashing at the guard. Hawkins takes it then comes out swinging putting ABBIE ON HER BACK with a crushing right hook.
Cat Bell: ABBIE CORNISH DOWN early in the second. There’s the speed of Hawkins, blink and you’ll miss it.
Danni: Electrifying right hook on the jaw of Abbie Cornish and she is flat on her back. Face like a stunned mullet.
Kylie: Cornish up at 7 though, dazed, trying to blink it off as Hawkins waits for the ref to call it. Cornish now covering up and retreating as Hawkins stalks her. Hawkins quickfire jab to Cornish chest and then through the guard to the face. Hawkins down below to Cornish midsection, hooks hammering bare skin over and over. Cornish backing away to corner, Hawkins continues the onslaught to Cornish abs, and brings in the uppercut, Cornish copping leather to the face again at the bell.
Danni: Jennifer Hawkins showing exactly why she is the AWUBA Lightweight Champion. Unrivalled speed in those gloves sorting Cornish right out.
Jennifer: When Abbie has Jennifer retreating she looks the goods but the speed of Jennifer is something I would put retirement off for.
Cat Bell: That I would like to see. 10-8 Jennifer with the knockdown.
Round 3
Kylie: Hawkins on the move now, and Cornish retreating under cover. Cornish using all of the ring staying away from the Hawkins jab, constantly backing away, sidestepping, changing direction. Hawkins searching with the jab, the occasional one gets through. Cornish returning fire.
Danni: Nothing much happening here. Cornish doing a good job of staying clear of Hawkins. Neither girl landing much though.
Garner: They are just working each other out again. But Abbie is getting a good break from the carnage at the end of round 2.
Kylie: Hawkins still stalking getting through with the jab, Cornish startled, back to the ropes. Hawkins working the body again, banging away with stiff arm tactics. Cornish looking tired, buckled over covering abs with elbows. Cornish ducking and weaving to avoid the barrage.
Danni: First punch by Cornish connects to the chin, shes off the ropes and turning in with a STRAIGHT JAB to Hawkins jaw. Cornish now shoving Hawkins to the ropes. Hawkins bedazzled, copping leather to the body, chest and chin. Hawkins covering up but taking a lot of shots there. There’s the bell.
Kylie: Cornish coming back into that round late but not before taking a lot of shots. She was looking tired then, maybe foxing a bit.
Cat Bell: Definitely foxing. The old rope a dope. Lovely straight jab by Abbie. That has turned the fight.
Garner: Still 10-8 Hawkins. She is just ahead.

Round 4
Danni: Both girls coming forward, Cornish landing two powerful jabs has Hawkins guard up and she’s backing away. Hawkins super quick on foot, staying away from Cornish combinations.
Kylie: This is where Hawkins changes the tempo of the fight. She’s backing away, ducking and weaving, stepping the Cornish attack. Cornish content to chase, lands a left right combination. Hawkins returns lightening jabs.
Danni: How quick are her hands? These exchanges are not achieving much though. Not a lot of scoring shots there.
Kylie: Cornish wide hooks followed by straight rights. Hawkins shaken by that exchange. Cornish closes in drilling right hands to the abs and chest. Hawkins rallying, jabbing the Cornish guard but can’t get through. Cornish continues the combinations to the body all the way to the bell.
Cat Bell: That was much better by Abbie. She controlled that round, I would say she has evened that up with the judges.
Garner: I’ve got that round 10-8 to Abbie. Very even fight so far.
Danni: Great to have Catherine Bell and Jennifer Garner ring side. It has been a pleasure to watch you both over the past decade.
Cat Bell: Oh thank you. It was a pleasure to watch you tonight Danni. That was a brutal way to knock your sister out.
Kylie: She’ll keep.
Round 5
Danni: Same again, both girls meeting mid ring, Hawkins leading with the jab trying to get Cornish to retreat. Lightening fast jabs from Hawkins, Cornish deliberately backing away. Hawkins hooking to mid air. Cornish ducking, then scoring with a bruising uppercut to the chin, followed by left and right jabs, and the RIGHT HOOK, HAWKINS STUMBLING SIDEWAYS. Cornish pounces, Hawkins supported by the ropes, Cornish working the body with stiff arm jabs, clubbing at Hawkins ribcage. Hawkins buckles over, covers up and Cornish CLIPS THE UPPERCUT…CHAMPION DOWN!!
Kylie: Classy action Abbie Cornish, first the unsettling uppercut, then the big right hook and now the solid uppercut right on the button.
Cat Bell: Hawkins getting to her feet though she is somewhere else right now.
Kylie: Halfway through the 5th, the Ref lets it continue and Abbie closes in, but takes a surprise left and right from the champ. Hawkins throwing leather, Cornish walking through it, wading in with hooks to the ribs, chest and chin. Hawkins swaying on weakening foundations, guard wilting, as Cornish GOES TO TOWN on the champs torso. Cornish hammering away, propping her up with the uppercut, Hawkins head is bobbing, Cornish senses victory, steps away as Hawkins falls to clinch but Cornish clips the uppercut once, twice, then steps away into THE RIGHT HOOK…DOWN GOES THE CHAMP!!
Danni: Hawkins head snap to the right, as she stiffens up and falls in slow motion to the canvas. She bounces to rest and this one could be all over. Abbie Cornish is celebrating already.
Garner: It is insane how tough these Aussie girls are, how can she be even moving right now.
Cat Bell: I don’t believe it. Jennifer Hawkins is on her knees at 4.
Danni: They would have to stop this wouldn’t they?
Kylie: The ref is looking Jennifer Hawkins right in the eyes….we wait….he’s letting it go!!
Danni: Cornish running in, Hawkins backpedalling to the ropes as CORNISH IS RELENTLESS firing shot after shot at Hawkins cover face. Nothing Hawkins can do here. Cornish blasting away at every inch of Hawkins as she hunches over and the REF steps in and cradles Jennifer Hawkins to safety…..this is all over!! THE NEW AWUBA LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION……ABBIE CORNISH!!
Kylie: Workman like TKO5 to Abbie Cornish. She demolished Hawkins in the this round. Up until the start of the 5th it was all square but Cornish has stopped her with some powerful punching.
Cat Bell: I want to see these two fight again. When is the rematch? Who is Abbie Cornish fighting next in the FCBA?
Garner: There was a list of girls wanting to fight her, thinking she was an easy beat. I reckon that list just changed.
Danni: Well you are both welcome to come back for the rematch. Lets go up to Eddie, he is with the newly crowned lightweight champion…Abbie Cornish.
Eddie: Yeah thanks Danni…WOW Abbie Cornish, what a 5th round.
Abbie: I couldn’t hang around for 10 Eddie and that is where it was heading with Jen controlling things. She is so quick so that when you think you are on top she can pull a jab out of nowhere. You’ve gotta finish her which is what I did.
Eddie: You certainly did. Your now the AWUBA Lightweight Champion again.
Abbie: Jennifer Hawkins is arguably the best fighter ever in the AWUBA and I am on a mission to take that mantle. I’ve got a lot of titles to win to catch her but I am heading in the right direction.
Eddie: So what’s next?
Abbie: FCBA fights of course. I’ve got a score to settle with Alesha Dixon from the BBU first. Then line them up. What’s Anne Hathaway doing these days, maybe I’ll start with her.
Eddie: So some big names there. Well done Abbie. Jen bad luck, you were lightening fast though, any quick comments?
Abbie: I knocked her down in the second and couldn’t finish it. Like Abbie said, I didn’t want to go 10 rounds either but I probably should have been more patient that round.
Eddie: Same question to you, what’s next for Jennifer Hawkins?
Jennifer: There are a whole lot of models waiting for me in the BBU. I’ll work may through them, get my name out there to the FCBA and also wait and see what comes up next in the AWUBA. A rematch with Abbie perhaps?
Eddie: Well we would love to see that based on tonights fight. Thanks Jen
Eddie: So there it is ladies and gentlemen. This brings to a close the launch of Downunder Boxing and our main event here tonight. We would once again like to thank Catherine Bell and Jennifer Garner for their comments tonight. We would also like to thank our overseas guests for making the journey and wish you safe passage back home.
There will be an after party at Baudo’s this evening which we hope you will all hang around for.
