Before: MEW back in tough—maybe the roughest initiation since Hilary Burton’s inaugural season—but Winstead addresses speculation that she’s simply being cashed in by opportunistic management. “We all have veto power over our own fights at Foxfire,” Mary insists. “Larter wanted this fight—but we also has Mischa Barton willing to deal, and my guys said I could have whomever. Well, I didn’t back down from Katherine Heigl or Jennifer O’Dell; I want to see what Larter’s got. My career isn’t ‘happening’ to me—I’m involved in every decision, and I’m thrilled at the fights I’ve been getting so far.”
Larter distinguishing herself by her own tough schedule—Ali on the verge of FCBA superstardom, not about to stub her toe on young Mary. “Winstead’s shown tremendous will on her fights,” Larter concedes at the podium. “She hasn’t rolled over and she hasn’t quit—she’s gone rounds with some of the best girls out there and that does her credit. I’m not the mho gets upset—I’m still too hungry, too wary for that. I’m put to win every minute of every round of my fights because I don’t want to leave anything to chance. It’s my job to make Mary’s life hell in that ring, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Winstead in brown bikini with yellow strings; white gloves. Larter in black bra, leopard print trunks; black gloves.
During R1: Mary swinging tuff-girl—Larter forced onto her back foot to parry and block raucous brunette punching at the open. Takes Ali a minute to contain the jailbreak—fitting her jab into Mary’s face, turning at the ropes, walking Mary onto rich body shits—by the third minute—Winstead’s trudging forward behind her mitts, unable to get off as Larter dictates, fighting well in retreat.
R2,3: Larter rotates left, turning Mary midring, pounding away jabs to set up the rest of Ali’s arsenal. Winstead inching forward behind a high, rigid guard at her temples—plenty of tummy available for crisp-punching Later to shoot at. Ali taking her time—steering Mary around, ripping her to the midsection with either hand, then pushing Mary to step away. Systematic, precise, firm—Ali laying the groundwork for a long, sustained beatdown of a stubborn brunette with these rounds.
R4: More Winstead defiance—she can’t box with Ali, so she’s not trying—Winny forward behind aggressive walking barrage of rights and lefts—temporarily disorganizing Larter. Ali jogging away for space, then starts piecing out her jab, slide-stepping to walk Mary onto poke—blonde regains control in a tense middle minu8te as Winstead reverts to that high blocking guard to defend Larter’s stick. Final minute—Ali focusing on Mary’s tummy—cramming home right/left loud and raunchy, then pushing Mary off to disengage.
R5: Ali on cruise control—dictating terms with her jab—she’s got Mary out on the end of poke covering up, mincing forward, unable to get off. Larter very thorough—belting Winstead on her waist with tuff right/lefts, sometimes hanging around on front (left) foot to dig in an extra left hook before disengaging. Larter’s feet controlling the ring—clockwise rotation occasionally jazzed up with little slide-steps back, coaxing Mary forward into harm, When Ali wants to come forward, she does so—beating Mary shabby on her body, then bumping her a tuff left shoulder to get Winstead backpedalling. Great professional stuff from the blonde—Mary looking disheveled through 5.
R6: Ali banged away classy—stout jabs sprucing Mary up, penetrating the guard, parting her breasts as Larter pivots left. Minute mark, girls trade right hands on teeth, then come back hooks and ALI’S SHOOK! Larter suddenly bug-eyed, stepping funky—she’s momentarily frazzled, earmuffing up in shock. Winstead overanxious, slams away rights and lefts up top-partially blocked by Ali’s high hand placement—Larter able to gobble Mary up in a clinch to stymie brunette jailbreak. Ali reasserting herself at cost—round features more toe-to-toe free trade, with Mary scoring as well as well as taking—both women prove sturdy legged as Larter fights hard to retain ring control.
R7: Larter snarling, putting extra heat on an opening barrage of hooks: she’s got Mary yelping, cringing, covering up as a brace of lefts bashes against ear and behind right elbow. MARY TAKES A KNEE! Sudden eruption of Mount Larter proves overwhelming—Mary teary-eyed, goes to her right knee, panting, wincing from a well-placed hook to her liver. Ali hard-eyed in neutral corner—Mary’s own power punching 6th proving a wake-up call for the determined blonde. After 8, Larter on Mary HARD—pushing Winstead to ropes for first time and lighting up her breadbasket a chugging series of rights and lefts. Winstead groaning—reaching to clinch; when she’s not clinching, she’s butt-in-ropes, dukes at temples, taking body blows. Fierce, sharp, sustained bombardment—Larter pushed back by ref when Mary can tie up, but blonde stepping right back in, usually with a feisty right roundhouse to waistline to keep Mary huddled up.
R8: Later continues to snowball Mary—turning a tuff, spirited contest into a grim one-way bludgeoning. Mary in full retreat now, head rocking back from her gloves as Larter starts to bang past the guard—Ali’s right hand, left hook breaking Mary down. Winstead wobbly butt—constantly trying to regroup behind her earmuff—but Ali’s banging body blows crippling brunette, stooping her forward with breathy gasps of pain. Larter using her left shoulder like a third glove—butting Mary in her chest or teeth to move her back and discourage clinches—blonde really scoring well, setting a murderous pace as she chews brunette up all around the ring. Winstead swaying at the bell, coughs up another 10-8 without a knockdown as Ali shows determined savagery in pursuit.
R9: Larter continues to score well—Mary’s head flinging back of her gloves, guard loosening, legs looking shabby. Winstead still refusing to give satisfaction though—she’s crowding in head-and-gloves, suffering to the midsection, but taking the blows to answer back nuisance hooks. Larter coming forward, but forced to work hard: Mary digging in, giving up canvas only after several scoring blows threaten to knock her down if she doesn’t give way. It’s grim, thudding stuff—Mary beaten soundly along all 4 ropes—but Winny not catering, even when Larter’s landing lusty to the waistline.
R10: Mary summons courage, resolve—trading punches with dominant Ali to deny blonde a strong finishing run. Larter eating Mary’s overhand right while scoring her own right uppercut; eating Mary’s hook in exchange for her own hook. Ali getting the better of trade as Mary’s legs can’t hold canvas—Larter comes forward at some cost, forced to fight for every inch. Ropes: Ali beating Mary dreadfully about her waist—leaning in, rotating her shoulders and really lapping hearty down there, but Mary stubborn, tilting forward behind her mitts and answering back—clipping Larter’s chin or tits little chopping lefts and rights in receipt. At the bell both girls are working hard, dutifully clubbing and clouting at each other in close quarters. Comes back UD10 wide—Ali Larter.
After: Larter hammers out 9 rounds to 1 verdict, puts Mary on canvas, but somehow fails to break Mary’s spirit. “I thought I did well,” a busted up, but irrepressible Winstead says in postfight. “I could tell she was frustrated at how tuff I was, but she was very methodical—I really couldn’t go over to offence like I wanted to. Ali’s good—that’s the kind of fighter I want to be.” Larter earning a hard-working dime, responds with grudging courtesy: “I think I underestimated Mary somewhat,” Ali admits. “I got into my rhythm, and I could feel her breaking down, but she wouldn’t collapse, which surprised me. After I put her down, I figured she had another 30 seconds in her tops—but the kid’s got heart. She gave me good rounds and got me some good work—good for her.”
