Before: "I've watched tape of Kristin Kreuk having success against Claire," a determined Vanessa H says in prefight. "It's possible for someone my size to attack Claire successfully - even hurt her. Krissy's not any better or stronger than I am - if she can do it, I can too. And who knows - after I shock Claire, why not run the table on the wolfpack? Sounds crazy until someone does it, right?" Danes chortling in amazement - giving 'Nessa pluck-points if nothing else. "Oh God," Claire says, wiping away mock tears of mirth, "where do I start? First - kid - you're no Kristin Kreuk - stop making that comparison before you embarrass yourself. Second - get it out of your head that you're going to be 'attacking' me. Your job in this fight is to SURVIVE - comprende? Third, I'm going to beat you like a cheap rug, but don't let that stop you from taking a run at my stablemates. Please: don't let it stop you." Hudgens in horizontal tan/white striped bikini with tan strings; small black work out gloves. Claire in crimson bandeau; small black work out gloves.

During R1: Hudgens attacking as promised: scooting in low, snatching at Claire's ribs - scuttling out of range as Danes turns, scowls. Vanessa quick, spirited on approach - even giving Danes a little feint upstairs before swooping in and swiping ribcage. Danes wheel-pivoting on her left heel, weight on back (right) foot, staying tall, making her reads. No damage either way, but Vanessa spoils the speculated-upon 10-0 rout by out-hustling Claire for points. Vanessa very pretty pulling away at the bell, giving Danes a fierce over-the-shoulder look (practiced at Disney).

R2,3: 6 minutes of Claire executing on Vanessa. Blonde being tall, working behind the jab, pivoting-left around it. Twitchy shoulder-feints from Claire, followed by sudden straight lefts or lead rights off the front (left) foot. Danes leaning forward, punching off the front leg, creating distance by shifting weight to back (right) leg while rocking back on left heel. Hudgens scowling - trying to penetrate and flash quick hands inside: Danes denying. Claire happy to reject Vanessa, control, but occasionally disciplining her via sharp right hands to forehead or jolting left uppercuts off front foot. 'Nessa taking a good shot, but rarely able to touch Claire with anything like authority.

R4: Claire angular - weight on front foot as she dips, jerks the short left uppercut to chin, neatly picking 'Nessa up and dropping her on her backside moments in. Hudgens up, blinking in alarm: smaller lass trembling as Claire shows rangy power. Claire's follow up cruel as it is patient, precise: two minutes of slow-circling midring, tapping away tart jabs to 'Nessa's left eye/nose. Hudgens a confused beauty - turning on the spot; crouching low with hands stacked right atop left at her midsection; getting tattooed. Bell: Danes turns away with the hint of a smile: Vanessa's eye clearly swelling, nose bleeding, buttocks wobbling.

R5: Medium-sweet punching from Claire; this is Danes operating with near total air-supremacy, feeling unthreatened. Claire wheeling in pivots, leaning in and out, jotting punches onto Vanessa - principally the jab. Danes working diligently to Hudgens' left eye - tapping at it, scuffing it - pivoting 'round the connects. Claire sparing with the right hand, but sharp and accurate with it: normally just a jolting, palm-down rebuke taking Vanessa between the eyes whenever Hudgens tries to jump inside.

R6: Similar Claire-at-ease - but with moments of blonde venom. 50 second mark sees Claire tilt in and dip on front leg, ripping the short left uppercut in hopes of securing a second knockdown. Hudgens eats it - staggers back wide-eyed, but manages to keep her feet. 'Nessa's reward for hanging tough? Constant knocking jab at her face; sliding right crosses, and; ripping left hooks swept lanky in behind the Hudgens right elbow.

R7: First minute pressure from a ragged, but defiant Hudgens. Claire clouted a right hand as she's moving back, clawed a hook as she's loping to her right - Danes able to leg out the storm and regroup behind her jab. Reprisals harsh indeed as Danes' eyes narrow, lips curl into a little snarl: she sets down on punches, trying to hurt Vanessa. Hudgens ripped and rocked - viciously taken apart as Claire leans in and down on precision one-twos, often finishing with that swingeing hook in the flank. 'Ness biting back cries - toppling forward and babystepping while cringing behind her mitts. Brave brunette is badly beaten in a turning battle midring - Claire having her cold-hearted way. Danes awarded 10-8 without a knockdown as Vanessa winds up cut over left eye, stumbling dazedly at bell.

R8: Claire shuts Vanessa out with heartless jabs, right hands reaching out and tapping at that left eye. Hudgens crouching, rolling, doing what she can: Danes extending long arms, owning the space, then leaning back out of range as if to dare Hudgens to pounce. Hudgens grimacing, all banged up: she's very tentative - moving up and down, slipping shots, but making no aggressive moves against Claire's torso through 8. During the break, Vanessa cries out as enswell is applied to her left eye. It'll be closed from this point on.

R9: First minute kamikaze pressure from Vanessa - reckless blitz up the middle temporarily scattering Claire. Danes loping to her right - body leaning forward with weight on her toes as she hops the perimeter: she's fresh, virtually untouched, easily able to evade these gasping rushes. Minute mark - Claire walks Vanessa into a twitching lead right hand off a feint: Hudgens caught coming in, stumbles to all fours as Claire straightens, brightens. Danes strolling around, hands on her backside as though she had pockets - patiently awaiting Vanessa's decision. Hudgens up, but swooning: she elects to dig in butt-in-ropes, inviting Claire forward. Accidental good strategy: Danes advances, eats a nice chopping right hand/swatting left hook as Hudgens punches from the bob. Claire angling in on front foot, titling forward - she's looking to snatch hooks to Vanessa's body in hopes of weakening her for stoppage.

R10: Claire circles, pecks at that already-closed left eye, working at leisure. Vanessa a battered wreck - often showing face-in-gloves peekaboo while leaning onto right foot, trying to puzzle things out. Danes keeping her distance, curiously respectful - she's still circling, coaxing Vanessa forward, rather than going right at the kid. Hudgens not herself: this is a shabby, stumbling, wounded brunette - not the shiny, quick, assertive Disney-trained quick-mitter who began the fight. Deeply discouraging for Vanessa as she fails to solve for height - absorbing a 9 rounds to 1 pasting en route to a UD10 Danes.

After: Silver lining: Hudgens shows heart - going the route when everyone in her corner had been asking her to quit from the 7th on. She sits on her stool inconsolable, staring at the floor, alone with her hurt. Danes rarely out of second gear tonight: smooth, effortless boxing - rushed on occasion but never panicked or disorganized. Only criticism of Danes is that she didn't push for the knockout. "I was painting a masterpiece...why rush?" Claire says with some irritation. "Look - I check her chin a couple of times - put her down...the kid got up, so I kept working on her. I'm not going to charge in when the girl's still getting off good hooks - not when I have her heart in the palm of my hand all night. Stopping her would have been sloppy guys, you know that."
