BOXING AFTER DARK

Before: Winnable fight, important fight for both girls coming in. "Poppy couldn't have done what I did against Katherine Heigl," says a very confident Mary Elizabeth in prefight. "She's soft, and she quits in hard fights. The only advantage over me she has is experience - but I'll take that away from her with pressure. I'm pumped - this is a great opportunity for me to separate from girls like Poppy and I'm going to take advantage of it." Montgomery a little scalded by the lack of respect - she's had a hard road and doesn't appreciate Mary's dismissive 'tude. "Mary won't last the summer," Poppy predicts, eyes hard as she speaks. "I wasn't impressed at all by the beating she took from Heigl - there's nothing special about this girl. I've been overmatched at times in my career - I've felt used and underprepared at times. This is one occasion that I'm not letting slip away. I'm beating Winstead and that's all there is to it!" Mary Elizabeth in brown bikini top, vivid teal strings, teal bottoms, white gloves. Poppy in pastel blue bra and panties, white gloves - giving Mary the frowning of a lifetime during ring instructions.

During R1: Dutiful, methodical, orderly punching midring - girls taking turns spanking away, each just getting warmed up. Chins up - girls' jabs hitting in midair as range is negotiated: bit of a girlish, tentative look early. Settles down into more meaningful trade over latter half - both bending side to side, pulling heavier blows onto the other and WINSTEAD SITS DOWN! Trade in hooks goes Poppy's way - toggling Mary's chin and momentarily buzzing her legs: brunette woozy, pushing up off her right hip as blonde cruises past, sneering: "Stay down Mare - you're hurt."

R2: Similar cautious first minute - girls pawing jabs, inching closer, then slowly opening up toe-to-toe. Crowd-pleasing once it gets going - girls twisting into roundhouses, dipping to either side for torso-leverage, grunting breathily with exertion. Lots of grazing contact punctuated with robust, splashy wallops against flanks and shoulders - good stuff. Final minute, wide-eyed Poppy straightens out her right hand, punching up the middle and catching Mary facing into harm. Winstead put wobbly butt, driven ropeside, worked over as she folds up face-in-gloves at bell. Poppy stomping back to her corner, eyes blazing as she shakes Mary once again.

R3: Same rhythm - feeling out minute, gradually evolving into girls pitching with bared-teeth, flashing-eyed gusto. None too accurate, but it's aggressive - girls really trying to hurt each other. Once again, it's Poppy: right hand stuns Mary upside the head, followed by the clanging hook to chin. Winstead staggers back on a line, chased by a hopping Poppy pumping straight rights into Mary's breasts. Winny bumped to ropes - she folds up face-in-gloves, giving away tummy and flanks on the cheap as Poppy clobbers away to bell. Montgomery heartless, giving weepy Mary a glaring once-over after the fact: blonde well in control through 3 bumping heats.

R4: Bell to bell Poppy - blonde enjoying her brunette all along the ropes and in the corners. Winstead grimacing, usually covered up, sliding along ropes as Poppy walks her down. Montgomery swinging away to the waist and flanks, arms shivering on batting contact - she's really getting off with impunity. Pops opening up the playbook, trying to split Mary's tight facial guard with uppercuts, or simply trying to wrestle the brunette's arms down. Plenty of blonde body weight being distributed as Poppy repeatedly stacks Mary into ropes: good strong work getting done as Monty moves her hands, stays on top, works Winny over with thudding consistency.

R5: Winstead joins the fight. Mary stubbornly standing her ground early, refusing to be bullied - both girls warned for bumping hard shoulders and aggressive rubbing with heads in a ruff opening minute. Winny gets on top with the first substantial jab of the fight, knocking back Poppy's face and startling Aussie. Final minute, Mary putting one-twos together, landing righty to Poppy's jaw and turning her pretty head: blonde put wobbly butt late, has to hang on shaky to the bell.

R6: Winstead over to offence, getting after Poppy all over the ring. Spirited stuff - Mary relentless, jabbing Pops in her chest to bump her to ropes, then piling on with strapping lefts and rights. Monty grimacing, moping a little - reaching in to clinch, getting ref's breaks: she doesn't like Mary's sudden surge in tempo. Wearying retreat for blonde along the aprons - Poppy looking a little shopworn, needing a rest: Mary's teeth bared, eyes bright and angry as a cat's as she works on Monty bell to bell.

R7: More Mary anyone? Winstead pinning her ears back - facing into panicky Poppy punching but blustering right through it: brunette forcing an energetic, free swinging brawl on her more experienced opponent. Montgomery giving ground, backing away and getting hit some solid wide clout upside the head: Mary repeatedly clobbering Poppy hard enough to send her tottering sideways. Winny always coming forward, even when getting hit: it's Poppy who's turning her head to the side and stumbling away with a fretting expression. Bell: Mary delighted, forcing eye contact with Poppy, revelling in blonde discomfort.

R8: Mary rolling Poppy up. Winstead marching into blonde with punches, then pushing Poppy backward, constantly bullying. Montgomery sidestepping, circling now, trying to keep her back clear of ropes. Mary strong, but not as effective as she had been - Poppy weathering the worst of it, able to reorganize even as she's backpedalling. Down the stretch, Poppy halts Mary with a robust right hand thick to tummy: Winny stoops forward, shouting in pain, unable to continue her advance. Poppy's eyes suddenly bright: she digs left/right to Mary's throbbing guts, then pumps left/right to Mary's swinging jugs, beating a bleat of protest from Winstead's lips. Mary stumbling forward: Poppy steps back in good order, walking brunette into sturdy lefts and rights. Blonde able to steal the round late, putting brunette wobbly butt and bringing tears to Winstead's eyes at the bell.

R9: POPPY back on offense, now rolling Mary up as Winstead resistance crumbles. Now it's Mary shying away, hands outstretched, head turned to the side as she's backpedalling: Poppy snarling as she comes forward pitching. Monty driving Mary to ropes and battering her - lots of slapping arm punches, but when Poppy sets and puts her hips into it, she's harming Winstead to the body. Mary staggering at times, thighs quaking - she's sadly pushing at Poppy to keep her off rather than MAKING her back off with punches. Final moments, Poppy bends into a gorgeous overhand right, pounding Mary's head flat against her right shoulder and staggering her sideways to ropes. Winstead's curvy legs hold her up as she goes face-in-gloves, absorbing a hateful blonde shellacking to the bell.

R10: Poppy's exhausted, mouth breathing: hurtin' Mary's vengeful. Winstead slowly wresting control of the round away from Pops - pushing Monty off balance, slapping and flailing at her, then scoring meaningful rights to the chin and lefts to the breadbasket in spots. Poppy panting, unable to hold her canvas: she desperately dives in for clinches, hanging on shamelessly as ref reefs at her rounded biceps. Final minute, Mary's irresistible, trudging into Poppy with crude walking barrages, beating blonde into stupor at the ropes. Crowd roaring as Winstead squares away, goes for the KO: poor Poppy's curvy legs put to the test as she is battered from one foot to the other, tilting shabby at the ropes but refusing to go down. Comes back narrow duke, UD10 Poppy Montgomery.

After: Lumpy Poppy sighing in relief, holding one exhausted arm aloft in acceptance of the decision: disappointed Winstead immediately pulls blonde's arm down and officials intervene as hard feelings spill into overtime. "I'm better," Poppy affirms in postfight, hair lank with sweat, eyes hollow with fatigue. "I'm tuffer in the clinches, stronger on the square-away - I just flat out put a boot up Mary Elizabeth's ass tonight." Winstead up in arms, feeling cheated: "I had her ready to go at the end," Mary insists on camera, eyes pleading. "You saw it - she had nothing left. How can you finish a fight getting worked over at the ropes and then come away the winner? I just don't get it - Poppy was out of it!"
