Before: Flyweights positioning—every fight taking on extra significance with girls looking to impress promoters and take care of rivals in hopes of gaining one of 2 remaining spots. Witherspoon/Hewitt II a rematch of a fight that saw a tactically inept Jennifer Love go right at the solid blonde and break apart in a series of ill-advised frontal assaults—JLH promising a different outcome this time, “I lost the fight last time, Reese didn’t win it. I can, and will make adjustments, punish Reese, and become a champion in this division.” Witherspoon in navy velvet bikini, silver studs—JLH in pale blue Calvin Klein cotton two piece underwear.
During R1, 2: Hewitt smooth, certain as she works Reese with flicking, pesky jabs, straight right hands and a nice biting hook in the belly before peeling away to reset. Witherspoon in a tight defence, coming forward in a crouch and trying to pressure Hewitt without success early. Jennifer with a nice move after she gets off—she’s leaning back, then falling off to the right as Reese comes up short—brunette not pulling straight baci, making blonde miss and getting adequate touches through 2.
R3: Banging Witherspoon round brings Jennifer to a halt—when Reese can get to those ribs—Hewitt stands hunches forward, lips parted, frozen groggily in place to take. Witherspoon buoyed by hard contact with Hewitt’s body this round—Jen slumping on her stool during break.
R4: Hewitt flat footed, but still cute—extending her jab and scraping the knuckles against Reese’s face, leaning back and falling off to the right as Witherspoon punches but can’t make contact. Down the stretch, Hewitt getting into nice rhythm of nailing Reese and escaping, steps in, lifts Witherspoon’s chin up with a slick right uppercut and IMMEDIATELY takes a banging hook on the chin. Hewitt dropped instantly to one knee—eyes wide as she momentarily numb from the counter. Witherspoon steals a Hewitt round and more importantly, shatters Jens confidence as brunette blubbers to her cornermen in near panic during the break.
R5,6: Bruising pressure from Reese as she bodies Jennifer ot the ropes, pushes and shoulders her to keep her pinned, and goes to work with constant bashing leather. Witherspoon just staying busy, pounding on her girl’s arms, touching up the lower body, coming up the middle with uppercuts from either hand, Witherspoon rough with her forehead, keeping her weight forward and chugging away to the breasts, just shrugging her shoulders to pump little lefts and rights into Jen’s generous sacks, Hewitt sullen, also punching inside with shoulder shrugging lefts and rights, but this is a replay of the first fight—Reese beating Hewitt up on exchanges.
R7: Classy JLH shutout—Hewitt able to control the center of the ring, keep her back off the ropes and turn her over-eager blonde this round. Witherspoon just not respecting Hewitt’s power, walking through everything, but she fails to cut off the ring and Jens ablr to slap and pivot for points this round.
R8: Witherspoon’s best round thus far. She catches Hewitt a banging right cross on the jaw that shuts the brunette down completely—Hewitt listless and hurt, sagging to the ropes and covering up, takes a methodical pounding this round from the increasingly confident Witherspoon. Reese bright eyed, happy in her work—she’s just bullying Jennifer, having fun pressing the brunette into the ropes, then bouncing leather off the girl’s shoulders or midriff. Jen protecting her head well, but offering nothing back—she’s psychologically beaten at this point.
R9: Another punishing shutout Witherspoon—Reese just turning into punches, loving the feel of her mitts on Jen’s slender body. Hewitt, grimacing, sobbing aloud on contact—she’s got head tightly protected as she gets clocked and buffeted side to side at the ropes—she’s doing some things defensively, leaning away from punches, blunting blows with her shoulder—but Witherspoon’s just pounding away at will.
R10: Tough to score 10th—Reese landing the harder shots, particularly that beefy hook on the waist—Jen getting off the ropes, steering her girl effectively and controlling much of the tempo down the stretch, Comes back UD10 Reese Witherspoon.
After: Hewitt looking drained, punished—she might have lost the first fight, but Reese stepped up and took this one with solid blonde pressure and relentless pursuit. Witherspoon beaming, sweaty, steadily improving with continued work, unashamed to say what she thinks of her rivalry with Hewitt, “I think I’ve put Jen behind me,” chirps Reese, “She played her part, but I’m moving on, she’s staying behind—that’s life. I think she can be competitive with some of the smaller girls, but I think this talk of Jennifer beig the next Kelly Packard is obviously greatly exaggerated.”
