Jill came up in weight to meet Ali at lightweight for this bout, and although both girls would downplay it—size did appear to have a subtle effect on proceedings throughout the night.
Wagner has a very aggressive style—reminiscent of Rafael Ruelas in the way she brings churning lefts and rights up from her hips, turning then over to generate lashing leverage against her opponent’s body and head. It means she tends to get closer than the long lines of her chassis would seem to dictate, and Ali Larter was clever enough to diagnose this propensity after engaging Jill toe-to-toe in early going, After a blistering first three heats
saw both women rocked in turn—Larter made a conscious decision to fight outside, tieing up rather than trading whenever Wagner edged in close to slug. That decision would see Ali sweep relatively quiet middle rounds, forcing jill to be ever-more the gambler on the night.
And Wagner nearly pulled it off. In the 8thkm Jill finally managed to fight her way through Ali’s clinch to batter the slightly larger woman to the ropes, unleashing the kind of lanky-limbed wallop that has proven devastating at bantamweight. More, and better, punishment flowed in the 9th as Wagner shellacked a wilting Larter along all four ring-aprons, So terrific was the non-stop stream of lank, that Jill was awarded a 10-8 without the knockdown—but even in this. Wagner’s shiniest moment, it was clear the move up had taken the edge of Jill’s stopping power. Willowy Larter proved able to soak it up, and in the 10th—she resumed her crafty punch-clinch-and-move routine to salt away a narrow duke.
When asked about the rest of the HMK stable—in particular Durance, Helfer and Daniel—Larter was upbeat to the point of cockiness in postfight. “I see me going through them Brandy Ledford style—1,2,3! If they want me to whip’em into shape, bring’em on—sharking up a stable would put me on the FCBA map to stay.”
