Before: One of the few on-set rivalries that is more substance than rumour goes public with this bout. Liu, a former Apartment Wrestler in New York circles is virtually unknown in the celebrity boxing game, but those in the know suggest that she tremendous skill. The hype is so thick you can slice it with a knife as liu draws comparisons to Hamed, Zab Judah and other fast, hard punching fighter. Smith not impressed, uncharacteristically predicts a beating for Liu, and the atmosphere is anything but congenial for this fight. Smith in black Jockey 2 pieve, Liu in red.

During: If there is anyone with a more chilling stare-down than Liu—we haven’t seen it. Smith’s gaze breaks and she stares at the floor as Lucy glares at her.

R1: Disasterous opening for Smith as the hype looks accurate for loi early. She has the knack of leaning her torso just outside Smith’s reach, pivoting and coming over the top with slick counters from weird angles. Courtney is down inside the first minute, as bewildered as she is hurt after getting clocked to the ear by an unorthodox right hand counter. Liu also has the ability to move and punch seemingly at the same time, stepping to the right, clipping Thorne-Smith with swatting left hooks, then suddenly changing direction and plowing a whipping right hand to the jaw of the blonde before she can react. Liu lands almost 65% of her punches in this dazzling first round, and Smith is already swelling up.

R2: The very orthodox Smith seems to play into Liu’s hands as she squares up and allows Liu to step right, switching southpaw, and Lucy nails Smith with a thumping right uppercut lead. Lucy almost side by side with Courtney plows a left into Thorne-Smith’s face from the weird angle and drives her to the ropes. As Courtney desperately bends at the waist, Liu unleashes terrifying body shots to the waist and Smith takes a smart knee. Courtney looks so outgunned and confused in this fight—while Lucy’s vicious expression hasn’t changed.

R3: Round of the Year candidate. Liu attacks, hands low, missing over the top with a wide right, and Courtney steps in, and loops her own right hand, catching Liu as she steps back. Lucy stumbles to her butt, and is clearly dazed. Smith bores in, attacking the Asian’s midsection with digging shorts lefts and rights, and suddenly Liu is hittable. Problem is, she’s hitting back. In a wild exchange, with both women getting nailed by power shots, Liu begins to back Courtney up with powerful uppercuts to the rib cage—Lucy bending her waist and turning into punches with terrific leverage. Smith is hurt and covers up on the ropes. Liu steps right and bangs hard uppercuts at the sharp angle, connecting with freakish accuracy. By the end of the round, Thorne-Smith’s classic face is a mess, and her 10-8 round becomes a 10-9 in the face of Liu’s effectiveness coming back from the knockdown.

R4: Smith seems to have shot her bolt. Liu surges forward, her hands just too fast as she continually gets to the right and left of Courtney and lands withering power shots from the angles. Smith goes down twice this round, both off tremendous uppercuts between her mitts as Liu looks to stop her. Gritty Smith lasts the round, but it is as one-sided a beating as she has ever suffered and Lucy appears to be as fresh as when she started.

R5: Lucy knows she has Courtney ready to go and bounds across the ring at the bell. On the run, Lucy brings the lead right uppercut from her knees and catches Courtney clean in the mouth. Smith seems frozen for moment, then crashes forward onto her face. KO Lucy Liu after dishing a brutal, sustained beating to the blonde.

After: Smith shows that Lucy can be hurt, but this is Liu’s party. She gives Thorne-Smith a beating that may be looked back upon as the beginning of the end for the plucky blonde veteran. Lucy’s relentless, unorthodox display of power punching literally shredded smith in the ring, and she may have left chunks of her reserves behind in this fight that she might never get back.
