Roger's cup final: Interpreted as boxing

Elena D's just knocked off Sharapova...here's how it might have looked as a boxing match...

Elena style note: Straight back; hands shoulder high, palms down - elbows out and up to the side - tends to poke straight shots without turning her torso into the blows. Spiffy footwork - hops and shuffles.

Maria style note: Classic forward aspect - back (right) heel up high, pushing off the toes; left hand down around the hip, right near the chin.

R1-3 - Fast start for Elena, tip-tapping away with those straight, pinging shots - scrubbing away on Maria. Sharapova not getting off, keeping dukes at her temple. Elena weaving to her right, finding angles on Maria's torso: Dementieva placing short, wedging little right uppercuts into Maria's left armpit, or just in under the left breast, snug behind the tricep. Maria grimacing: these are the same short, stuffing body shots that had Serena with her hands on her knees, wheezing in between the rounds (Dementieva stopped Serena earlier in the tournament). Most importantly - Elena's rapid pace and tapping touches pre-empt Maria, and mess up her back foot (she can't get set on her toes back there).

R4-6 - Maria toughens up, finding a left hook square in the pit of Elena's belly. Dementieva will give that shot up in order to keep her hands up and block Maria's right: Dementieva determined not to give up the home run. Elena getting taxed, but continues to push the pace - not hitting Maria big, but CONSTANTLY chipping away at her. Sharapova fights well in these rounds - probably carries them - but her reserves are burned up in the process.

R7-9 - Sharapova visibly slowing down, going flat footed: she's exhausted, soldiering on on pride alone. As Maria tires, Elena can vary her rigid attack some. In addition to the palm-down, straight punches, Elena's coming in off the jab and rapping Maria's waist a tart right/left, further draining the Sharapova tank. Elena bouncing small gloves off Maria's face at will now - really scraping away on her: Sharapova wobbling at times, facing into the scrub. Punished, cranky Maria absorbs a steady stream of straight, knocking head shots throughout the ninth - punctuated by that withering little right uppercut in around the left breast...accumulation breaks her down, puts her on all fours, and stops her.
