BEFORE: "I'm comfortable with my size in this one," says bright-eyed Mary in prefight. "Missy's rangy and tall, but slender - I think she's a little fragile to be in with a strong girl like me. I'm gonna press her 'till she breaks!" Peregrym pursing her lips at Foxfire tuffness - Missy doesn't cotton to bullying in OR out of the ring. "I think it's safe to say Mary's never been in with a fighter of my calibre," Missy says, neatly dismissing Nichols and every other MEW opponent. "I'll spot her a few pounds - why not? Just more of her to hit - that's all!" Santakini two-pieces: sport tops trimmed in white fur; boy cut bottoms with white-fur waistline; short black santa-shoe with fur trim; small short-wristed black gloves with white fur trim.
During R1: Winstead stalking, dukes up: Peregrym stepping calmly left, piecing out the jab, keeping her distance. Minute mark: crisp Peregrym jab spanks at Mary's defences; rifling Peregrym right penetrates, scoring to chin and MARY GOES DOWN! Stunning bang-bang combo - slick, straight, jarring - drops MEW to her backside for a quick count as she bounces right back up. Peregrym business like off the knockdown - immediately testing Mary with half a dozen spearing jabs - Missy stepping left, dragging her left foot in a bucket, pushing off the back (right) big toe with fluid mechanics. Mary normally a diligent jabber: her poke being suppressed by Missy's in the first.
R2: Peregrym outside, turning Mary clockwise midring - keeping Winstead well-behaved with a long, scolding jab. Winny parrying poke with raised mitts, brow scowling in concentration - she's not having much luck with her own jab as Missy's slick footwork's causing problems. Peregrym occasionally unleashing that sudden right - very abrupt, straight delivery off the shoulder; Mary's doing well to block it. Winstead plucky, trying to find the Peregrym ribcage with roundhouse punches - earning the odd tangy spank before Missy can slide out of range.
R3: Peregrym steppin', pokin' - controlling Winstead midring: Mary turning, dukes up, following like a good opponent. Missy dutiful - jab is hard, elastic, popping off the defences or spanking off the body; feet are calm, sliding, never out of position. Late the round, rare exchange sees snarling brunettes trade straight rights/left hooks and MISSY'S CLIPPED! Peregrym stumbling back on her heels, ducking undereath a roaring Winstead right over top: Peregrym hugging up around Mary's waist, holding on tight and hurt at the bell.
R4: Peregrym back to business - circling Mary, punishing Mary with jabs, breaking her down and rifling the odd shattering right cross through the middle. Winstead lumping up, looking a little shabby - her head's bopping back more often as Missy's accuracy starts to defeat the blocking sheme. Midway through, left jab/right hand quick combo stuns Mary again: she cringes forward behind her mitts, absorbing a lanky, strapping hook again and again across her ribs and MARY GOES DOWN! Winny gasping on all fours, tummy panting in and out: she bravely beats the count, but she's shabby taking her 8. ON COMES MISSY! Peregrym wary, touching out her long jab to measure, then leaning into the vicious, smooth right: Mary's head bangs back over the top rope as her knees buckle. Missy: clipping left hook on Mary's mouth; knifing right cross, cracking against Mary's left eyebrow; curling left uppercut, taking Mary's chin; vicious right cross smashing Mary's face back once again. Winstead out on her feet, pools into canvas knees first, then sprawling to her face: KO4 ChristMissy Peregrym!
After: Smug smile Peregrym as she steps over Mary's pale, KO'd back: Missy answering Mary's sturdiness with economic skills most often seen in 5 year veteran celebs. Missy with that lanky, smooth power; great balance and athleticism bringing to mind a Kelly Pavlik in the ring. "I hope Evangeline Lilly was watching this," says a confident Missy in postfight. "Just when she was getting comfortable - whoops, there's Missy!"

After the fight, Mary Elizabeth is brought around on her stool and as her head clears, she sees Missy chatting amiably with the press. She shakes her head, unable to believe it all ended so badly, but then she squares her shoulders and gets up. She makes her way over to Missy and offers her hand.
"Congratulations, Missy," Mary said simply. "You pack a lot of punch."
"I appreciate the opportunity," Missy said. "You feeling okay?"
"Not as good as you do now," Mary admitted.
"Yeah, I've lost enough myself, to know what you mean. Look you're good Winstead, just not as good as I was tonight."
"I won't underestimate anyone again," Mary said.
Missy nodded: "Then you can consider this a learning experience."
"I'd rather have had the win," Mary said wistfully.
"I'm sure you would," Missy agreed.
Mary then nodded and headed back for her own corner. Missy went back to chatting with the press. Mary glanced back saw this. She sighed regretfully and then return to her own corner.
(Well, looks like we outsmarted ourselves by having Mary fight Missy. At least Mary showed her class in defeat. Good luck to Missy at bantam, Mary can personally attest to her punching power. We'll bet if Navi Rawat, Anne Hathaway, and especially Rachel Nichols, were in the crowd, they'll be looking forward to their expected fights with MEW. 2008 is going to be testing year for our young lightweight).
