Boxing After Dark

Before: Basinger stepping up and out of her comfort zone, taking on big banging Kim Cattrall in NYC. Cattrall with some regional fame stemming from successful forays at apartment wrestling and boxing - it's a rare TV ring appearance for the SITC star. Basinger in black boat neck sports bra, grey stretch aerobics briefs, fighting ponytail, Cattrall in grey stretch sports bra, teal aerobics bottoms - white shoes and gloves for each.

During R1: 'Buzzsaw Basinger' surprises Kim out of the gate, throwing the playbook out the window and going right at the big woman. Basinger curling in overhand rights, harsh left hooks, bats Cattrall's head around, has the big woman on her heels as Kim C reels to the ropes. KC defensively inept - she's reacting late as Basinger bites into midriff, then rocks up top with the hard right hand - crowd going wild as Cattrall takes a beating and doesn't seem to know how to stop it. Midway point CATTRALL GOES DOWN! Shattering lefts and rights drop KC to a knee - Basinger sharp, beating Cattrall to punches and getting her body into the side to side licks, primarily to the face. Kim C beats the count, continues to loll ropeside as Basinger gets a little more cautious, stepping in and out behind her jab to run the clock. Cattrall back to her corner with a bleeding nose and shellshocked eyes.

R2: POUNDING assault to Cattrall's trunks - smaller woman looking for the equalizer and once again Kim C crumbles to the ropes under a barrage between the hips. Basinger playing rough and loving it, coming up between Cattrall's mitts and HAMMERING the big woman's face back with her skull. Pumping lefts and rights to the belly have KC draping forward - Basinger smothered - Cattrall finally finding a way to slow the blonde down. Final minute - KC having some luck bodying up and walking Basinger back - Cattrall not landing any punches but at least she's not getting shellacked.

R3: Basinger went right at her girl early, now she backs off, shows Cattrall some classy wheels in a breezy third. Basinger stepping right or left, stooping to shoot the jab to belly, drawing KC's guard down, then popping upstairs with the sucker hook. Cattrall able to come forward now, but still ineffective - she's missing as Basinger uses angles, sidesteps nicely to keep the big girl off balance.

R4: Basinger fields her first hard punch of the fight - a stuffing right hand to the sternum that has her reaching in under Cattrall's arms to clinch. Big girl repaying some roughness, spinning Basinger off balance and crudely throwing her to the canvas - KC warned for pushing as Kimmie B sucks it up. Basinger on the defensive more often this round - Cattrall's walking her down, getting off with bashing right hands and stomach-seeking hooks. Kimmie B loses her first round, but does a good job staying out of trouble - Cattrall having trouble landing flush.

R5: Wonderful two way action - both girls doing business. Cattrall strong early, buffetting Basinger with clubbing lefts and rights - smaller blonde reaches in around the bigger girl's waist, but KC keeps banging - punching in Kimmie B's sides, around and underneath the arms. Basinger starts using her legs, gets Cattrall overextending - fight evolves into KC slugging effectively, but Basinger slipping and stepping out nicely, picking her spots to dip in low and come up hard to the crotch or underbelly - stopping Cattrall in her tracks. By the final minute - Basinger's accurate counters have Cattrall hobbled - big right hand, big left hand on the face spills KC into the ropes with a dazed expression, hands at her stomach. Basinger piles on, bashing Cattrall's stupified face back and forth - KC ready to go as the bell sounds to save her.

R6,7: Basinger backing off - she's got Cattrall's eyes puffy, nose bleeding, and she can hurt the big girl on occasion, but KC showing a solid welterweight chin tonight. Basinger in control with her legs, never standing in one place after getting off, touching Cattrall mercilessly to the body, face and between the legs. Ref issuing warnings, but Basinger's cold to all rebukes, pushing her way past the man to continue her dissection of Cattrall. KC despondent after 7 - she can hit Basinger, but she just can't find the leverage to hurt her.

R8: Cattrall loading up for a knockout, but it's Basinger doing the scoring. Nimble blonde making easy reads, slipping under sweeping Cattrall offerings and countering to the trunks or tummy, then spinning off the body to one side. Cattrall unable to square up - she's doomed to stumble forward, chug away with half-hearted strokes, and take meanspirited counters underneath.

R9: Cattrall really on her heels - she just doesn't look like she wants anymore. KC

extending her arms to push Basinger off - at one point, Kimmie B hacks over top, swivelling Cattrall's skull and putting the big woman wobbly butt. Vicious slashing attack to the waistline and face backs Cattrall to the ropes - she's pathetic as she rocks back or pushes her hands straight out to stop the beating - Basinger just putting punches together and tearing into the bigger woman without restraint. After 9 Cattrall's face is a ruin, she's sobbing uncontrollably, and this fight is OVER! Cattrall gives it up on her stool rather than go the distance - TKO9 Kim Basinger.

After: Basinger shocks the world, or at least NYC, turning the aggressor on Cattrall, getting cheap, getting rugged, and pounding out a vicious win over the bigger woman in surprising style. "Basinger was supposed to be the southern belle coming to New York to get mugged," quips one veteran fight reporter, "Cattrall looks like Kim beat her with a lead pipe. Basinger looked like the Manhattan fighter tonight and you have to hand it to her for not being intimidated in Cattrall's back yard."
