Before: Consensus 1 and 2 meeting for the championship—Jenny G looking to topple Cat from her pedestal and not just as the lightweight belt holder. “Bell’s an icon and I have a chance to beat her in her prime—that’s very important to me,” Garner relates in prefight. “I don’t want people looking back years from now and saying ‘yeah, but Jennifer Garner never beat Cat at her best’ and having big debates about who really would have won in their primes. The beatings I give Cat now are going to write the history between us for all time.”

Bell also sensing the historical significance in Jennifer’s challenges. “Ever since she broke in, people have been calling Garner the New Cat Bell,” Cat grins, “I realize these are important fights. I think Jenny might be counting her beatings before they’re hatched, if you know what I mean. History just might write her down as one of my stiffest challenges in a great era of lightweight boxing—but nothing more than that. Right now, she’s just another very good fighter to have tested Cat Bell.”

During R1: Cat strong to midring, hands up, palms out, shooting a high jab to forehead and chest to move Garner around the ring. Bell coming forward, then stepping back, looking to step hooks with a pokey, quick right hand—darting stuff at a distance. Jennifer using her legs, stepping lively to her left—spotting the jab to Cat’s belly and between the

gloves. Bell the aggressor, takes a tactical first.

R2: Garner steps up the pace, very sharp turns to her left as she peppers Cat  a stabbing jab, spacing it out along the champ’s torso, thrusting it hard between the gloves to get spank off bell’s face, Garner stepping right and walking around, then shooting lead right hands, looking  to hang around and rake hooks off the front foot—she’s got Cat backing up, looking defensive. Down the stretch, Jen really dialed in with the jab, stepping, feinting, putting 2 through the mitts and banging back skull—she sets Bell up for a shearing right cross on the teeth at the break to put champion backside a-wobble.

R3,4: Girls break out the good stuff—cold-hearted back and forth—sharp, classy exchanges. Cat hooking ribcage off her jab, looking to close and drop the right hand. Garner stepping left around her springloaded stick, consistently ducking under Bell right hands and answering the hook up top. Both use a little step-in, bending at the waist t take a look inside, straightening and dropping the back leg to get distance—economical moves in and out propels hooks and right hand power shots as the girls slip and slug. Garner’s getting the better of it it—slashing at Cat’s ribs the hook, getting a crisp hook consistently on the jaw, placing right hands all over Cat’s chest and jaw and outjabbing the champ whenever there’s movement. Bell looking a little frazzled through 4, face scrubbing up nicely under Garner’s accurate bursts.

R5: Cat attempting to engage, jabbing as she comes forward, swinging hard sidearm rights to the body then slugging side to side in an attempt to bully the challenger, but Jen’s not having it. Garner standing her ground, bending at the waist and answering—furious give and take sees Bell eventually step back  under fire, taking punches., Jenny stepping with, launching tight hooks and blistering right crosses—she breaks the stalemate with a clocking right on the chops to drive bell stunned to the ropes. Jenny moving in tough—one/two up top to occupy Bell’s guard, then a jagged hook in behind the elbow to freeze the champ—and another. Garner’s muscular back and legs rippling into relief as she lets her hands go—banging away wide and rapid to the flanks, drooping Cat forward, then picking up her hulking jugs with buzzsaw punching in close. Bell woozy as she lolls forward and back, just riding out the punishment, Garner straightening at the bell, hard looking of satisfaction in her eyes.

R6: Cat’s not done. More two way slugging midring—both girls getting up the power with firm jabs, both moving their heads, pivoting left, but it’s all with an eye to getting off hard and answering everything the opponent does. Bell gets a swinging right to the pit of Garner’s belly this round—has Jen doubleclutching, unable to pull the trigger at times—Cat finally able to get shoulder on Jen and budge her back, wrapping up and turning her—little veteran holding and hitting going on.

R7: Bruising, bashing give and take as Jennifer raises the tempo once again, forcing Cat to answer. Garner hook-hooking the midsection, then turning her torso to the right to pull hook to chops—Bell getting hit flush now, but answering back with brawny hooks to belly and a clubbing overhand right behind the ear. Jennifer able to stand in the pocket, beating Bell to punches with pure handspeed—Cay repeatedly moved off her stance and forced to regroup—it’s the smaller woman coming forward. Garner doing tremendous work in Bell’s midsection—tearing up great chunks of Cat-gut with rolling combinations, slashing at the rib and cudgeling jug with rising lefts and rights. Volume just overwhelming—Cat finishing up dazed at the ropes, shipping leather as Jen outworks her for points through 7. Significantly—Bell unable to clinch and body up—Jennifer fighting through that stuff very effectively.

R8: Shutout Cat bell as champ answers the call yet again. Bell bending in close to haul the right hand hard into Jen’s jaw, then bending right to sweep the hook to ribs—Garner lashed up against the ropes and forced to cover up grimacing as champ piles on the hurt. Cat finally able to stand up tall, palm her girl’s slumped shoulders and heap a little on—reefing hooks in on the rightside, dipping and digging rights up underneath, bullying Garner into the ropes with extended left elbow. Garner rolling punches well, covering up, but unable to get off—she’s pushed and pasted bell to bell.

R9: Jen stutter-stepping left, lights Cat up with a brace of jabs that has the crowd oohing and aahing—Bell simply dazzled as stick spanks off her face, nothing she can do about it. Jenny’s legs take over—she’s circling briskly, dipping to jab at tummy, hopping to jump a hook onto Cat’s chin, pivoting to avoid the receipt—Bell falling off the pace as the younger woman puts it to her. Midway through, a blistering combinations of hooks and straight right hands has Bell covering up in desperation—Garner’s teeth bared as she hooks, hooks, HOOKS the ribcage and CAT BELL”S HURT! Bell groaning as she slumps forward, hands at her temples—Garner goes to town! Jen letting her hands slash at Cat’s hips and lower back, stepping back as the champ crumbles forward, picking her up classy on the way in, then sidestepping to let Bell sprawl into the ropes. Savage beat down the rest of the way—Garner’s fists tearing apart Cat’s guard. Beating the mouthguard off her teeth and ransacking that lush body to the bell. Jennifer’s chest seething as she glares at the bell—Cat staring back from swollen eyes.

R10: Cat off her stool a warrior, bending into right hands, coming out of the crouch the lashing hook—she’s got Jennifer slugging midring and Garner’s eager to indulge! Furious give and take—both girls bending in and out with rights and hooks, catching each other across the breasts, turning each other’s heads and it’s Jen Garner backing Cat Bell up! Bell’s back touches the ropes, face showing her dismay as Jennifer pours it on in the last minute. Bell clipped the right uppercut between the mitts, the doubled up stiff bya digging burst of lefts and rights in her gut—Jennifer just shoveling on the hurt with an inhuman effort in the last round. Garner just a punching machine to the bell, working Cat’s body, picking up her chin and chest—Bell held up by curvy legs and a champion’s heart, but there’s nothing coming back as the ref jumps in to enforce the break. Comes back UD10 for the winner and NEW lightweight champ—Jennifer Garner!

After: Cat’s face beaten to a glossy sheen, eyes swollen, all busted up in her ribcage—you don’t see Bell get handed the treatment she so often hands out herself, but we saw it tonight. Garner showing her dimples, all smiles as her gloves are removed—it’s a scintillating effort from the new queen as she hands out a comprehensive beating top and bottom.
