Before: "It's all about the rankings," Lindsay shrugs in prefight. "I'm trying to separate myself from the girls in my class, and against Poppy, I had a chance to stay busy while denying Holly Valance a spot on this card. Had to do it - and if I smoke Poppy bad enough, I might even get back in the top 10, so it's a no brainer." Hard-punching Aussie Poppy Mo has her own ideas for the fight. "The names you usually see in this group are Neve, Lindsay, Jennie, Julie, Jewel and maybe Brandy now," Poppy explains, "but what about me? I fit right in with these girls, and beating Lindsay's a great way to prove I belong. She's not going to sneak by me, that's for sure: one way or another, I'm going to make this girl fight." Lindsay in hot pink lace bra and retro-style bikini-cut panties; black gloves; hair in long tangle curls.. Poppie in black lace bra and panties; black gloves; hair loose, long, curly.
During R1: Spirited stuff - full use of the ring as girls step lively, engage crisply. Poppy conventional: dukes at temples when she's in range; jab off the shoulder; chopping right hands. Lindsay a little more relaxed - a suppler waist, more head movement as she bobs and rolls on her hips. Price's left hand at her hip, right near her mouth: she's got a cute way of ducking in under Poppy's left jab - crowding close to tuck a pair of short, shovelling rights up into Monty's ribs - then straightening up to throw the left shoulder into Poppy's mouth. Montgomery blocked off her stance, stumbling back on her heels when Price does it right. Ref initially thinks Lindsay's throwing a short hook up top - later realizing it's a shoulder and warning Price for dirty-boxing her blonde.
R2: Lindsay on Poppy, moving Mo around the ring, engaging at close ranges with short, cuffing/swatting combinations. Montgomery grunting, covering up, getting herself touched up: Price digging at paunch and ribcage, then coming up top hooks and uppercuts, giving Poppy and nice hip-to-head touch up. Shutout Price: Poppy subdued, tingling all over from Lindsay's saucy touch.
R3: Price continues to edge in with left shoulder, managing Poppy beautifully at close range: cuffing and bumping with fists and shoulders. Midway through, Montgomery startles Lindsay a jamming right hand chopped in over Price's left shoulder: follow up right hand puts Lindsay wobbly butt, forcing her to clinch. Much more cautious Price the rest of the way: she's reaching her left arm in under Poppy's right, securing her for plugging right hands to stomach and left hip. Poppy responds in kind: pleasing tummy-to-tummy slugging-in-the-grasp ensues as girls rest chins on opposing left shoulders while punching 'round the other's restraining left arm. Poppy's round: she had Linds visibly rocked.
R4: Poppy continues to advance. Furious, rising right hand takes Lindsay under her left breast: brunette gasps, cringing away from the shot as Montgomery plows forward. Follow up barrage of clubbing lefts and rights clobbers Lindsay head-and-shoulders: she turns to her right, stumbles to all fours as Poppy proudly struts away. Shaky 8 Linds, then Poppy's on her at ropes: blonde leaning forward, swinging energetic rights and lefts in roundhouse loops at Lindsay's ribs/tummy. Price ashen-faced, suffering: she resorts to clinching, tying up and pulling Poppy forward while slumping back into ropes for ref's breaks. Action bogs down as Price plays rope-a-dope - cleverly cuffing and clipping at Poppy, then glomming on head-and-arm. More Poppy points, but she can't collapse the pocket on crafty Price: Lindsay able to extricate herself from a perilous 4th.
R5: More two-way punching: Poppy dominant. Montgomery landing another of those succulent, rising right hands in under Lindsay's left breast: brunette cringing away from the shot, face stricken. Blonde pursuit steady, but not all one-sided: Lindsay very effective conducting fighting retreats - routinely walking Poppy into check-hooks off the back (right) foot, or sneaky pre-emptive right hands. In the clinch, Lindsay's dirtier, busier, more effective - always tucking an extra punch into Poppy's ribs/tummy, or fetching her a shoulder in the mouth. Montgomery bulling her way forward, bludgeoning Lindsay head-and-shoulders - judges like determined blonde aggression here, awarding her accordingly.
R6: Wheels fall off for Poppy: Lindsay records an early Round of the Year candidate. Montgomery beaten pillar to post, enjoyed by Lindsay in the corners, midring, along the aprons. Price baring her teeth, punching passionately, but always in control: Lindsay getting close, then digging, swatting or cuffing her shots with very little backswing. Poppy rung up again and again: reeling back from telling hook to chin; stutter-stepping from a right behind the ear; stooping forward from a left uppercut to sternum; stepping in fence post holes after Lindsay works her way up-torso tic-tac-toe. Crowd squealing each time it looks like Poppy's going down: Montgomery always rallying her shabby legs in time to cover up and take the next beating. Price heartless: she's got a ragged blonde in front of her and she's just walking Monty down, shoveling on the hurt. Bell to bell Price - poor Poppy a stumbling wreck, blinking back tears, huggiing her ribs at the bell. During the break, a weeping Poppy quits on her stool, still hugging throbbing ribs that simply can't take any more Lindsay. TKO6 via submission, Lindsay Price.
After: Price a little scuffed up, but jubilant: Poppy had her moments, but succumbed to one of the most persistent attacks we've seen this year. "Any time you can force a corner-capitulation, it's sweet," Price gushes, eyes dancing. "I hurt her early in the sixth, and I just kept at her, kept at her - never let her breathe or rest. She was crying at the end, and I THOUGHT she might quit, but I didn't want to get too excited, because there were still a bunch of rounds left if she didn't. This is a big result for me, and I'm looking for a big payday. I've got the deuce on Britney - love to make it a trifecta. Failing that, it's time to take Brandy Ledford down, as well as put Holly Valance in her place. That'll do for a start!" |
