Before: Kaley taking time away from her cougar-hunting duties to put down emerging threat Winstead—FCBA foodchain very much in evidence in this fight. “I’ve been on the attack this year,” Kaley tells reporters in prefight. “Establishing myself and collecting the names of some older gals—but if you focus too hard on the girls in your crosshairs, you’ll miss the girls creeping up on your backside. I know Mary wants to push Katie and me, but I’m not so distracted that I’ll let her get away with that. You have to be constantly vigilant in this sport: one day you’re the hungry young ingénue, targeting girls above you; the next, there’s some Hayden Panettiere or Mary Elizabeth Winstead who’s painting the exact same bullseye on YOUR back!”

Winny nodding, feeling her oats—Mary’s emerged as the best of the developmental prospects at her weight and looking to break out with a win over an aggressive, athletic young blonde, “Beating Kaley means I’ve definitely taken my game to the next level,” says the level-headed brunette. “It’s a tough fight, but you have to push yourself every bonce in a while. I’ve beaten the Rachel Nichols class girl—I’m past that, I’ve graduated—now I need to claw my way onto the next plateau.”

Mary in pink bikini with white ruffle waistline and white strings; white gloves. Kaley in white sport-halter; royal blue low-rise boy cut trunks with sporty white hip-belt (Octagon girl style costume); white gloves.

During R1: Spirited two-way—Kaley using the ring, showing springy leg; Mary encroaching, dukes up ever-wary of Kaley’s pounce, but pushing the pace regardless. Cuoco testing Mary’s reflexes with feints, darting lead rights, stopping tummy jabs—single shots all, then Kaley steps out and circles. Winny doubling her jab, keeping right at her temple—she works her way in close enough to hook off the jab, then attempt short, chopping rights before Cuoco can quick-step away Kaley’s ring generalship gives her initiative—she engages and disengages as she pleases: Winstead being feisty, making sure she bangs away lusty whenever Kaley’s in range. Winny overcommitting at times—embarassed as Kaley sidesteps prettily, pushing Mary in her back to guide her past—Cuoco sending a clear message about who’s classier in the first.

R2: Kaley outside—showing the jab to Winny’s chest, then suddenly pouncing in off it to snap-hook Mary’s chin: Winstead suddenly stamping wobbly butt as Cuoco catches her clean, cold/ Winny proving double tuff: she absorbs a slashing right over her left shoulder; a doubled up hook breadbasket and mouth; a vicious hook dug deep behind her right elbow. Kaley bouncing side to side, tearing it up with those snappy, snatching combinations, then pivoting away from the receipts. Mary getting rocked and stunned, but proving sturdy—staying on her feet, rallying from chin-checks, keeping her dukes up. Kaley dominates, but can’t coax quit out of Winstead in a shutout second.

R3: Kaley pouncing in from well outside: disciplined Mary able to make the blonde pay. Midway through, Cuoco bogging own against the competent Winstead poke—blonde slowed up just enough to make her available to an intercepting Winstead right. Mary putting the hook on top as Kaley’s stymied—Cuoco sent stumbling back on her heels, momentarily wobbly butt. Winny strong to Kaley’s ribcage, wading into her blonde with right/left roundhouses—great strapping blows drive Kaley to ropes, prompting first blonde clinch of the night. Mary baring her teeth—making up for lack of polish with sheer enthusiasm as she stays on Kaley, clubs at her head and shoulders with rowdy lefts and rights. Cuoco able to slip, dip and roll Mary’s clean-up attempts—blonde supple and relaxed in the pocket, though not firing back as Winstead works for points.

R4: Mary jabbing to Kaley’s chest—pre-empting and disrupting the blonde—very well-schooled Winstead patiently allowing Cuoco to pounce into the jab, then countering Kaley with stamping straight rights, Kaley IS penetrating, but it’s expensive—she’s getting nicked far more often than she should be, not showing enough respect for Winny’s sturdy defences. Crowd-pleasing stuff as Kaley circles malevolently, curling in from angles with quick-release lead hooks or lead right hands: Mary turning, sliding back a half-step to help absorb the blitz and answering Kaley on every occasion. Round up for grabs late when Mary walks Kaley into a stubby one-two to chin: as Cuoco’s stamping for balance—Mary reloads, steps in, punches two more poking right hands to Kaley’s jaw, completing the job of unhinging Cuoco’s knees. Kaley’s eyes betray her to the jdges: Winny steals the round.

R5: Mary’s face stern with determination—she mitts up off her stool, wades into Kaley behind a spitting jab and lights the blonde showgirl up a swinging right to the forehead. Cuoco driven backwards in dismay, hands down—Winny pouring forward in walking barrage of workmanlike lefts and rights PUNCHES KALEY TO HER BACK! Cuoco tripping over own feet, sprawling stunned—Winstead staggering forward with her own momentum, tramples Kaley’s outstretched left arm! Wail of pain, Kaley—ref issuing immediate rebuke—Winstead bowing, apologizing: that surely was unintentional, Blinking 8, Kaley—Winstead quickly in, rapping a drumming right/left off Kaley’s waist to begin festivities. Cuoco groaning, bunching forward behind her mitts: Winny knuckles her mitts into Kaley’s, pushing Cuoco back into ropes, strapping another joyous left hook across trembling blonde abs. Crowd roaring at the unexpected sight: Mary Elizabeth Winstead stacking Kaley Cuoco against the ropes and issuing thumping beatdown. Bell to bell Mary puts a winsome smile on the brunette’s face—she whirls away from a cramped and cranky blonde at the break. BSE corner giving Kaley a little tough love—they want more discipline, less showmanship, telling her “Quit screwing around. Baby, it’s time to put HANDS on this girl!”

R6: Cuoco regroups, eyes hard; she gets after Mary with springloaded tenacity. Cuoco in set stance, feinting, then stitching her jab into Mary’s tummy or mouth, sidestepping left to turn her brunette, Mary jabbing-with, but missing—Kaley regained control of middle and long distance. Feints and jabs setting up Kaley’ sudden, lead right hands—non-anticipatory poke slamming through to Mary’s face before Winstead can react. From the second minute on—Kaley’s working in off her jab, stroking Mary a quick-biting hook to midsection, then doubling that hook to jaw: beautiful Sugar-Ray Leonard snap on the shots a BSE trademark. Winny outclassed, touched up-=-she barely fires a shot back in anger as Cuoco posts a shutout 6th.

R7: MARY WON’T HAVE IT! Young brunette proves a feisty one—punching her way into Kaley with jab/righthand/hook routines and pressuring blonde to ropes. Robust thumping of Kaley’s midsection has her bunching up and clinching—Winstead enthusiastically employing pressure to make this a belly-to-belly contest. Cuoco unable to employ angles or superior reflexes: she’s playing the role of choosy counterpuncher off the ropes, dipping and rolling for angles while Mary’s pinning her ears back and wailing away. Winny’s colour high—hard work getting done here and not always productive—but she effectively suppresses high-octane Kaley with the ol’ shove-and-slug through 7.

R8: Realization dawning on Kaley: Mary won’t be finessed or bamboozled—Cuoco’s going to have to beat points out of Winstead the hard way. Bruising exchanges all around the ring—Winny willing to stand in and trade as Kaley initiates murderous trade. Cuoco much quicker-mitted in combination, able to rip Mary body and head before Winstead can get off. Mary covering up face-in-gloves, leaning forward into Kaley’s punches—brunette waiting her turn to punch rather than risking punching-with the fast-twitch blonde. Cuoco keeping her back clear of ropes—committed to wearing Mary down to the ribcage here, but still sidestepping and pivoting to turn her girl and use interior angles to good effect, Winny panting at the bell, lumping up—Kaley scrounges out hard-fought points.

R9: Brutal toe-to-toe continues—Kaley curling in as she’s walking to her right, slamming a right to Mary’s hip, hooking her body, hooking her mouth, shouldering her. Winstead absorbing, then answering, strapping away to Kaley’s waist and clubbing her head and shoulder, Cuoco the aggressor, getting the cleaner touches and she’s better defensively: every exchange sees Kaley just edge Mary by a smidge in a bitter two-way tossing. Cuoco deploying evil little curling right uppercuts to chin/left uppercuts to solar plexus: Mary visibly wilting as her head jolts back or body cringes forward from these vicious touches. Kaley sidestepping to her right, always turning Mary—brunette starting to absorb unacceptable punishment as blonde piles on the work through 9.

R10: Winstead proving a gamer—busted up and obviously hurting, she’s willing off her stool, can‘t wait to get back in and mix with Kaley. Cuoco showing good respect—circling right, jabbing rather than just punching on in, then working hard to beat Mary to punches inside. Kaley’s combination punching decisive at close range: legs and handspeed decisive at range—Cuoco’s class starting to overawe Mary’s pluck and fighting heart in late going. Mary brave, dukes up as she tries to crowd-and-bang—but she’s getting fewer opportunities. Kaley’s got air-supremacy now, initiative, fresher legs, arms and body—blonde ups the output, starts to really beat her brunette midring. Bell: Mary crouching forward face-in gloves, absorbing a bad pasting as Kaley’s just bouncing combos off target. Cuoco lavishes a late, forget-me-not hook to straining brunette abs—leading to some harsh words/hard feelings in the immediate aftermath. (Cuoco evidently exacting payment for Winstead’s careless 5th round trampling). UD10 by single point—Kaley Cuoco.

After: Winstead fighting with Debbe Dunning attitude tonight—outclassed and outgunned, she showed what a girl can do if she’s willing to risk all, get chest to chest and work hard in a fight, Cuoco scuffed up—tougher outing than expected: unlike veteran cougars who know when they’ve lost and know when to ease up—fighter like Mary still throw everything they’ve got into every exchange, even during lost causes. “Tough fight,” Kaley allows in postfight. “She’s not a great boxer, but she did follow instructions well—she executed the fight plan her guys gave her and I ha trouble with her early. She’s scrappy, and it’s hard to look great against a scrappy fighter because sooner or later, you have to get shoulder-to-shoulder with’em and root’em out, you know? I got in there and beat her up, but it wasn’t pretty—I know that. If Mary wanted to make me take an ice-bath after this, then it’s mission-accomplished: I am HURTING! So I will give her that, but I also have to say I’d like to see Mary clean up her act. That Mish Williams crap isn’t appropriate—you don’t stomp on girls when they’re down—Mary’s better than that.”
