The Ashes--Reviewed from England

Posted by BBU TV on 9/19/2011, 2:07 pm

Let’s join Denise van Outen in the BBU TV studio, where she’s talking about that 4 – 2 Ashes defeat in Melbourne:

Van Outen: I’m joined in the studio now by the BBU head trainer, the former Olympic Heptathlon champion, Denise Lewis – you must be disappointed Denise?

Lewis: Of course! But we’ll come back strong, and beat them next time around!

Van Outen: I guess you had high hopes, then Samia got beaten up by Emily?

Lewis: Samia was doing so well, then in the third Emily just did her with those uppercuts, and it was over before Samia knew it! It was a shame, as she had the Aussie in trouble up til then, and looked like getting us off to a flier.

Van Outen: Then you went 2 down?

Lewis: We did – but what a fight! Pippa had Miranda going at times, but in the end she was exhausted – punched out really – the girl has so much courage, and I’d have her on my side in any battle. And she’ll get better! She’s training with Tech and I see her getting into FCBA at some point – the Americans will want her, I reckon!

Van Outen: You seemed to be staring down the barrel of 3 – 0 soon after?

Lewis: What a comeback! Alesha looked finished part way through the second, but the girl digs so deep! Getting up again and again, then knocking Natalie sparko was incredible!

Van Outen: And Rochelle?

Lewis: Rochelle is a star – that’s it! Poor Rachael did nothing wrong, other than get in the ring! Rochelle can go all the way in celeb boxing if she gets the breaks contract-wise.

Van Outen: Then of course the grudge match!

Lewis: Cheryl was just mugged by Danni – the girl couldn’t takes the punches the old Aussie was throwing, and there was years of pent-up frustration and hate in every one. I wasn’t overly surprised by the result, having seen Danni’s recent fights – she really packs a punch at this level.

Van Outen: At least the fans got a thrill?

Lewis: What? Oh yeah! Cheryl getting her kit off in front of that crowd raised a few … smiles, I think. And now we’ve got our own little urn of ashes to fight for!

Van Outen: You weren’t happy that the final fight was a vets clash, were you?

Lewis: No! Liz is retired, and, tough as she is, taking on superfit Elle was too much for her. She did her best, but I don’t want her fighting again – she’s going to get hurt, badly hurt.

Van Outen: Thanks Denise! When’s the return match?

Lewis: Not arranged yet – but when it comes, we’ll be ready, bet on that!

(Kimberly Davies, of Neighbours fame, has recently worked closely with Baudo to develop an Australian Womans Boxing Magazine to cover AWUBA events and overseas events including BBU and FCBA fights. "Kim" has headed into the Crown Palledium to meet with the Downunder girls and find out how they are fairing after the inaugural Ashes series against the BBU. She walks into the gym and finds Baudo laying in the middle of one ring cradling what looks to be the Ashes Urn. None of the girls are anywhere to be seen)

Kim: Baudo?

(Baudo appears to be out like a light, Kim makes her way over to the ring and under the ropes, Baudo stinks like a brewery)

Kim: Baudo?

Baudo: Hmm, what?

Kim: Ah Baudo you stink!

Baudo: Oh Kimberly, now there’s a beautiful face if I have ever seen one

Kim: What are you doing?

Baudo: You tell me and then we’ll both know.

Kim: I am supposed to be interviewing your girls. No one is here but there drunken manager.

Baudo: From what I can remember we all came back in here for the after party, I had about a thousand shots of jaiger and here I am.

Kim: Cradling the urn, centre ring.

Baudo: Yep

Kim: It was a pretty special night wasn’t it.

Baudo: Any Ashes series where the Aussies beat the Poms is a special night but the fact that Cole’s crispy fried g-string is in here makes it even sweeter.

Kim: Danni monstered her last night.

Baudo: She did. She might have some news for you if you can find her.

Kim: It’s after 9:00am, I’ve got a busy morning as I am supposed to meet with the Brits before they get on the plane.

(just then laughter and cheers can be heard as the doors fly open and the members of Downunder stagger in. Everyone appears to be totally intoxicated. Kylie Minogue and Jennifer Hawkins are holding Danni Minogue up. The Emily’s are belting out a remix of Advance Australia fair and Queens We Are The Champions. Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Rachael Taylor have wrapped their heads in total paper and have large L’s hanging from the necks. Miranda Kerr and Elle MacPherson are carrying blow up dolls with Pippa and Liz’s faces stuck over the dummies heads. Nikki Visser and Jessica Marais are wearing nothing but a pair of fire emblazoned bikinis. Abbie Cornish, Michelle Bridges and Sarah Murdoch appear the only sane ones, although they are each cradling a bottle of Moet)

Baudo: Look what the cat dragged in.

Kim: More like a dump truck. How am I going to get any sense out of that lot?

Danni: DAVO!! How the hell are ya? Come over here and give us a kiss!

Elle: Hey Baudo, Emily got laid!!

Baudo: (to Kim) Don’t print that. Girls, what hour do you call this?

Nikki: Pants off Tuesday!!

Baudo: Very funny. You mean the pants that are in here (points to the urn)

Danni: You’ve got the urn…..we have been looking everywhere for that, that’s why we are late.

Kylie: Wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that we had to bail you out of jail for running naked down the main street of Kings Cross?

Baudo: (to Kim) Don’t print that.

Kim: Listen guys I would love to hear all about last night but I have to get a few comments from each of you about your fights

Danni: I smashed Cheryl Crow….print that.

Abbie: Ha Ha Cheryl Crow…..it was Cheryl Cole you peanut!

Danni: Oh was it? Maybe Cheryl Crow would like a crack at me now that I am coming out of retirement

(silence…..all girls look to Danni, Baudo hangs his head and shakes it in dismay)

Baudo: Far out it is impossible to keep a secret around here.

Danni: I was going to tell everyone today anyway

Baudo: Yes that is what a press conference is for.

Naomi: Baudo, Danni is a flyweight, we already have 3 flyweights. Are you turfing someone out?

Baudo: Nobody is going anywhere Nomes, we will have 4 at Fly.

Nikki: We are already an aging gym in some areas Baudo, how are these girls going to get FCBA fights at 40+?

Baudo: Girls, hush hush, it will all come out in the wash. Lets remember one thing, finding fights for our girls in the FCBA is always going to be a challenge. Danni isn’t coming back to try and get FCBA fights, but if they are interested then we will send her. Same goes for any of you girls.

Elle: Baudo is right. We have a healthy association here in the AWUBA and we can get regular fights against the Europeans. The more exposure we get from fighting here and in the UK, the more chance there is of being noticed.

Kim: Tess Valmore hit the nail on the head when I caught up with her over the phone last night to get some comments on the Ashes. There are so many fighters on the books, it is impossible to expect more than a couple of fights a year in the FCBA, even the US fighters are struggling for more than one or two a year.

Baudo: We’ve sounded out the girls we think can mix it with the yanks and if they want to talk we’ll talk.

Kim: Who are they?

Baudo: Well Emily and Emilie have fought FCBA fights, and we are very excited that Marvin Fox has offered Emily the privilege to be fighting Hayden up in the Whitsundays later this week. Miranda is in the scope, the will be models lining up to fight her. Abbie is right in the spotlight, she has fought in the FCBA and as the AWUBA lightweight champ, she will get a fight or two. Rachael is based over there now due to the Charlies Angel gig, so she is fighting in their backyard. Elle is trying her best to get herself a title fight, whether they want it or not will remain to be seen but we have said she is preparing for it some time before she turns 50 so lets just hope they bend some rules and it happens.

Kylie: It’s my job to ensure we are keeping the communication up to the guys at the FCBA. Given that we have a clear list of potentials, this should help, regardless of whether they are interested or not.

Elle: Nikki and I will make sure we continue to produce exciting boxing. One thing is for sure so far, you know you have fought someone from Downunder, we either knock them out or get knocked out trying.

Baudo: Kim do you want to start with Danni then?

Kim: Sounds good.

Baudo: Why don’t the rest of you get cleaned up, go and get some rest and then I want all of you back here for training at 3pm.

Elle: Where are you going with that Urn?

Baudo: I’ve gotta go and get a cabinet measured up for this baby, it’s not going anywhere for a while.

Emily Browning: Samia and I are really evenly matched. I thought she was a body puncher so she surprised me in the second when she went upstairs. At the end of the second it was really do or die and my defense held up well. Once I started throwing punches again, she was an easy target. If you look back, a body pucnh ended it, the uppercut and the hook were elimentary.

Miranda Kerr: Pippa Middleton is one of the strongest bravest hardest fighters I have ever come up against. Big future for that girl. I'd think twice about getting back in the ring with her but I guess it is inevitable. She has endurance but did tire after the 6th so there wasn't much in her punches. I would love to get in the ring with Leona Lewis and Laetitia Casta....dind't she beat them?

Natalie Bassingthwaighte: Alesha Dixon can close early but she has also lost in some early KO's so I just wanted to surprise her with power and land that early KO punch. She withstood my biggest punches, very tough girl. And she has a hell of a KO punch herself. The right hook at the end of the second, and the combination that sent me into "lady gaga land" are still ringing in my ears. I'd fight her again though.

Rachael Taylor: She was too good. I stuck to the plan, working her out the first round but then she pounced in the secnod and I wasn't expecting that until the middle rounds. Probably exposed everything in the first. Shows I still have a lot to learn but I am glad I got in the ring with a classy boxer first up.

Danni Minogue: I destroyed the b###h, plain and simple. I can't wait to see what she has to say. Old one punch Cole. She was putty in my hand after she went down the first time. I was hoping to stretch it out and make her hurt for a few rounds but when the first hook, which wasn't even a hard punch, put her down then I realised it was all over in the first round. Danni Minogue is back baby yeah!!

Elle MacPherson: Not much to say really. I have a lot of respect for Liz. She came out of retirement for this one and she fought tough for the first two rounds. I was shocked when she put me down and at that point I realised I had to work harder. Once I found my rhythm it was my fight for the taking.
