Before: Promotional coup for maverick indie-promoter Jenny O’Dell--she puts “Battling Bells” on the cards, works overtime at the podium to pump it. “I fought Lake in her debut I think,” Jenny recalls, “and couldn’t believe how much game she had for a rookie. You think of overlooked girls who are coming into their own right now and Lake is right at the top of my list. I know Durance, Larter, Cuoco, Biel--all those kids: this girl is my pick of them all. I wouldn’t be putting her in with Cat if I didn’t think Lake had every chance in the world of winning.” Cat cordial with lake; frosty towards O’Dell throughout preflight events. “I know I can still handle strong young fighters,” Cat says at the podium. “I know Jenny wants to move this kid at my expense, but I think that’s pretty short sighted. O’Dell’s probably forgotten how I treated her in her first big step up in class: if that’s what she wants for Lake--maybe Lake needs a new manager.” Cat in electric blue bikini; white gloves; glossy black hair shoulder length. Lake in fire-engine red sport bikini; white gloves; hair in wild brown curls.
During R1: Cat creep-stepping to her right along the perimeter, moving her head, left shoulder pointed at Lake--she’s looking to set traps. Lake attacking fearlessly--jabbing Cat’s left shoulder or breast, pounding her a wide right hand in the ribs, then crowding in to work: Cat tying up after absorbing rising, bandy-armed licks in close. Cat looking to catch Lake a sneaky screened right hand: punch is getting off, but never quite lands flush. Lake the busier girl, walking Cat down, putting consistent polish on older woman’s chassis.
R2: Cat still stepping to her right--showing a bit more of the jab: she’s disrupting Lake’s approach, having better luck with the sneaky right counter as girls fall-in. Cat scoring, then tyhing up: classic punch n’ clutch slows the fight as Lake strains to slug. Jenny O’Dell ringside--not in Lake’s corner--but encouraging Lake the busier girl, walking Cat down, putting consistent polish on older woman’s chassis.
R2: Cat still stepping to her right--showing a bit more of the jab: she’s disrupting Lake’s approach, having better luck with the sneaky right counter as girls fall-in. Cat scoring, then tying up: classic punch n’ clutch slows the fight as Lake strains to slug. Jenny O’Dell ringside--not in Lake’s corner--but encouraging Lake, berating the ref for allowing Cat’s grappling tactics.
R3: Lake the aggressor, bringing the fight to Cat once again: Cat timing younger vixen, trying for big right hand solo shots, then tying up. Lake strong in the clinch--reaching under Cat’s arms to chest her to ropes: cat working hard, slides her right hand down in under Lake’s left arm, turning Lake counterclockwise into the ropes. Vivid swimsuits offer high contrast: bright primary colours against pale, strong bodies, Mauling dirty-boxing from Cat in the clinch--shoulders, forehead-rubbing, a little elbow. Lake scuffed up, then SHE writhes her left hand in under cat;’s right arm, turning Catherine clockwise into the ropes to pay her back in kind. Both beauties straining--heads in close together. Teeth bared: several reversals-at-the-ropes as the girls methodically work to get inside position with their hands. Ruff, tuff round goes to Lake: just no-nonsense, hardnosed, trench warfare, bringing a clapping JOD to her feet.
R4: Bit of everything. Cat showing the jab, trying to bust Lake up a bit early. Lake answering with powerful right hands, stroking crosses to Cat’s chin and backing her up. Cat edging inside, walking Lake back strong, bullying her for a moment; lake wriggling her hands down inside Cat’s arms, reaching around her back and turning her into ropes in a tight embrace. Both girls digging in right hands while cradling the opponent with the left around the ribs: both looking to writhe limbs in to control opponent’s rib cage, shift her into ropes, then work her over until the reversal. Both girls indulging in jug mugging: easing the right foot back and lapping away with rangy, rising lefts and rights in turns. Jenny O’Dell cupping her mouth and hollering “Slop it to her, Lake! YEAH!” as girls slug each other senseless.
R5: Similar stuff--Cat looking to work off the perimeter, stepping right, playing punch-n’-clutch/hold-n’-hit. Lake up to the challenge--wrestling with Cat and wracking her right hands in close, Fighters embrace each other to ropes, reversing each other smoothly, strongly--pushing each other to corners and opening up in spots. Similar arm-action--lose, rangy--as girls stoop forward and lash limbs underneath, During interludes, both girls will utilize loose neck-clasps, holding the other girl behind her neck, forehead-to-forehead: both seeking to lick curling right uppercuts from this posture, testing the ref’s patience. Spanking to and fro a mouthwatering display of lightweight strapping: both torsos bright pink, jugs glowing from the mutual wallop.
R6: Good boxing around for Cat--she’s touching Luke a stiff jab, then crossing the right to Lake’s chin, tying up to smother the receipts. Lake frustrated--out of rhythm: Cat’s little sidesteps, jinking torso movement occasionally confusing the youngster, leaving her open. Cat still strong enough to muscle Lake into ropes, wrap her with the left around the shoulders, then beat her right hands amidships. Cat spanking away to tummy, ribs, tits--occasionally carving the right uppercut to lake’s chin, picking brunette up smart. Lake bullied in the grasp, not as effective as she has been: late the round, she absorbs a series of well-placed right crosses with her arms crossed against her body.
R7: Did Cat hurt Lake last round? Cat the aggressor, squaring away big-girl in Lake’s corner: Catherine looking to slug away without clinching now. HAMMER AND BANDY-LIMBED TONGS! Crowd roaring as Cat rings Lake up to set the tone: Lake absorbing, then shelling back in kind as girls clopbber away in turns. Tall girls twisting side to side, slopping lefts and rights onto heads and shoulders while the other girl waits in a slight crouch. Great, beefy spank sounding out--girls lashing fat whacks to waists and ribs--gorgeous CHUP! CHUP! CHUP! Blasts as fighters stand wide and do not skimp on punishment. Late the round, Lake busts Cat a looping right on the chops, turning Catherine’s head and stunning her. Cat immediately clinches up top: can’t stop Lake from chugging away all lanky-limbed to gut at the bell.
R8: Lake strong on Cat: girls square away all blazing eyes, bared teeth, Lake leaning into her shots side to side--feet spread wide: OH, she’s cranking leverage, turning over the punches, following through with high elbows. Cat falling off the pace, looking harried: she’s got hands stacked right atop left, elbows out to either side as she rolls-with the incoming. Occasionally, Lake will lean in and clean up a right hand on Cat’s chin, drawing shouts from the crowd. Cat’s legs give a shimmy now and then: she’s leaning into ropes, bouncing off them, trying to get cute and set lake up for counters. Final minute all lake: bandy-limbed slugging numbing Cat; reaching-in clinches bodying Cat to ropes; pushing-off and fresh slugging repeats the process. Systematic sheeting action has Cat limp, docile at the bell, covered up earmuff and taking punches.
R9: Jenny O’Dell hollering enthusiastically, exhorting her charge: Cat busting up,. Sullen, sweaty, haggard. Lake striding in all sloshing jug: she cranks away rights and lefts.. Twisting into the shots, turning the punches over and bringing the elbows across high as Cat sags butt-in-ropes. OH THE JUG! Cat doubled over--Lake arches her back and stuffs the left uppercut home to rack. Lake resets, twists torso-right and hoists another left uppercut home, thumping into jug as Lake’s bellowing in triumph, Cat ashen-faced--trying to reset herself and answer back, but she’s overwhelmed: Lake’s working her over with relentless, plowing blows, Lake knuckling Cat in her shoulders, or reaching under her arms to body her into ropes: Cat anguished, but no longer abler to reach-in and reverse. Lake’s long legs humming--she works hard to the finish, cleaning up huge through 9.
R10: Battered Cat proudly off her stool--she limps out of port, but gamely gives battle midring. Hard trade in right hands goes Lake’s way; hard trade in lefts spins Cat’s head, sets her on her heels and crowd grows shrill. Catherine rallies, walking Lake into a clinch around the body: Lake simply working to slide her hands inside Cat’s outstretched arms, then muscling her back into ropes. Ref issuing breaks, complaining about the rub-n’-bump going on: Lake breaking cleanly, but getting right back on, offering Cat no respite. Hard to watch final minute: Cat sitting in ropes, face-in-gloves, docile; Lake in wide stance, shifting weight foot to foot--twisting her magnificent frame into fight-winning shellack, Cat keeps her feet, but she’s battered into second place: UD10 Lake Bell.
After: Lake euphoric: she takes down 40-something legend in Cat Bell-style beat down, overpowering and draining the older woman. Jenny O’Dell pleased as punch, hugging and praising her fighter. Bit of an ugly moment on the ring as cameras are being arranged: Cat and JOD exchanging bitter words in the aftermath as cooler heads interceded. “Huge doesn’t begin to describe it,” Lake gushes in post fight. “With Jenny O’Dell’s guidance, I know I can go all the way in the FCBA. Cat Bell is living proof: the sky’s the limit!”
