Prefight comments from Kylie Minogue

I’d like to say Abbie Cornish was too experienced for Bleakley but I actually have no confidence. Abbie really should be too quick and too strong for Bleakley who is coming off a KO lost to Sarah Manners but did have a good first up KO win over Jenny Frost. Abbie won the AWUBA Lightweight title in a great win over Jennifer Hawkins and I think that form might get her through here.

Round 1

Bleakley going after Abbie early, with her trademark body shots that got her the win over Frost. Great timing and precision of jabs to the ribs actually have Abbie on the defense. Bleakley workmanlike, slogging away at Abbie's ribs lands a HARD UPPERCUT to the breast and Abbie is hurt! One minute in and Downunder are in trouble! Bleakley controlling the tempo, driving jabs and hooks into the sore Cornish rib cage. Abbie offering quick jabs in return but Bleakley takes them on strong abs and fires gut wrenching hooks back into the Aussies abs and she buckles over against the ropes. Bleakley lands two neat uppercuts which set Abbie up for another combination to the gut but Cornish spins off the ropes and manages to fire a hard hook to the ribs and she comes away. Bleakley takes it, arcing to the side and offers a knowing grin to Cornish. The bell ends a dominant Bleakley round.

Danni: You’ve got to hand it to the Europeans tonight, they are not only taking the fight to the Aussies early on but they are getting on top and causing a lot of damage. This is why the early KO’s are coming as they chip away at the body and then finish them with ferocious head punching.

Kylie: Couldn’t have put it better myself sis. You can only combat that with accurate outside punches up top and be confident that you can take a few hard shots in the gut.

Round 2

More of the same from Bleakley through the first minute. She’s backing Abbie up with the body blows and the Aussie does nothing but take the abuse. She is already getting red around the torso. Mid-way through takes a solid blow to the ribs but fires a RIGHT HOOK to the open Bleakley temple and almost spins the Irish girl off her feet. Bleakley quickly shakes it off as Abbie comes in with a flurry of jabs and uppercuts to the face but Bleakley is quick enough to duck and sway then get underneath for her own flurry of punches at the Aussies stomach. Both girls planting their feet and landing blows to the bell.

Danni: Another round to Bleakley there but only just. Abbie probably offered very little early but did land a few solid shots mid-way through. Much better from Abbie once she got off the ropes.

Kylie: Yeah it could easily have gone the way of the other fights but I think what you saw there was less class from Bleakley to end the fight of a much more experienced boxer.

Round 3

ALL ABBIE CORNISH! Abbie gets in at the body with Bleakley and the harder punching from the Aussie has Christine looking for a ride out of there. She is back into the corner with Abbie blasting left and right wrecking balls into her abs and DOWN GOES BLEAKLEY! Well there was nothing in that but hard shots and the Irish girl just sank to her bottom. She is sucking in the big ones at 7. Abbie straight in, cuts down the angle and Bleakley is back in the corner taking leather to skin in an ab work out she would rather not be having. Bell to bell body blows from Abbie, OH HUGE RIGHT HOOK to the ribs, and another LEFT HOOK to the ribs and Bleakley sinks to her knees again. How much more of this con she sustain? There’s the bell.

Danni: Much better from Abbie. She has found a weakness in this Lioness girl but there aren’t too many weaknesses tonight.

Kylie: Christine probably lacks the power to go punch for punch at the body with Abbie and maybe lacks the experience or the guts to try and fight up top now.

Round 4

Clever by Bleakley, doesn’t come out and fight back keeps backing away and clinching at every opportunity. She is actually scoring punches in the clinch and matching each head shot from Abbie with a cheeky blow to the ribs. The first two minutes of clinching from Bleakley have clearly frustrated Abbie who is now swinging wildly at the Irish girls face from a little more distance. “SETTLE DOWN ABBIE” screams Visser, but Cornish lands a perfect RIGHT HOOK that makes Bleakley skips backwards and another hard shot has her covered up on the ropes as Abbie manages to land a couple more hard body shots at the bell.

Danni: Cornish a little untidy at the end there, clearly frustrated by the clever clinching from Bleakley. She is well on top now but this Irish lass has more tricks than we expected.

Kylie: Great to see this from the Lioness Club. As much as we want our girls to win fights, this really is an awesome display of talent from the Europeans.

Round 5

Bleakley continues to clinch but the ref is onto it now and breaking them up much quicker. On one occasion the ref forces them apart and Abbie swings a VIOLENT RIGHT HOOK that catches Bleakley right on the temple and DOWN GOES BLEAKLEY! Her body goes rigid as she falls like tall timbers straight to her side. She goes out on the canvas, the ref counts it and it’s all over! KO5 Abbie Cornish!

Danni: A much needed win there for the Downunder Girls. Not the prettiest boxing we have seen in recent times from Abbie Cornish but it got the job done against a really crafty fighter in Christine Bleakley. Really looking forward to seeing her progression.

Kylie: A desperate win there from Abbie Cornish. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is why Baudo was down there getting the towel ready for NatBass, he just wanted Abbie in there getting him a win.

Danni: Lioness 4, Downunder 2.

Kylie: I hate to say it Danni but my prediction of 6-3 to Downunder did not include wins in the next 3 fights…..we could be end the receiving end of a 7-2 flogging!
