LIONESS CLUB: DOWNUNDER EVENT REVIEW

Posted by Kate Garraway & Gina Wild on 10/11/2011, 3:23 pm

Hello, this is Kate Garraway speaking from the KO Club, North London where the Lioness Club members are enjoying a day-off before the BBU Championship quarterfinals start during the weekend. Head trainer Gina Wild has agreed to share her opinion on our recent trip to Melbourne where we defeated the might of Downunder Boxing by 5-4 in a great event hosted by Mr. Baudo.

Kate: Gina, you've promised to give us your opinion on LC first event outside of London. Let's hear it, then!
Gina: Thanks, Kate. You're doing much better now that all the cans of Foster's are removed from your eyesight..
Kate: Let'd don't talk about that, shall we. I still refuse to accept what happened with me and Foster's!
Gina: OK, OK, some other time maybe. But going down to business, I must admit after the Ashes where the Aussie girls romped over the English contingent 4-2 I was afraid that we'll get the short end of the stick too. I had three safe bets for wins on our side and three which I knew would be impossible to win too. So it all came down to three fights I had even, but in fact there was one or two upsets involved.

BUNTON/WATTS
Emma is only starting her career and Naomi hasn't fought for over a year. I had this going in our favor and that's what happened. Emma with a good KO win and staying on track for the BBU Flyweight crown. If Watts was in her prime and fought on a regular basis with international opposition recently, she could have won it though. She certainly wasn't the worst Aussie out there!

RANGE/DE RAVIN
My second pick for our win which was fulfilled but what shocked me was the nature of Heidi's win. She really found that extra spark after stopping Cheryl Cole and has shown little mercy for the much experienced de Ravin. I almost feel like I must apologize the Aussie fans, cause this was humiliating for their girl. This gives Range quite a chance in the BBU tournament but Michelle Keegan is one tough girl to meet in the ring. There wil be blood spilled on the canvas there!

BIEDERMANN/BROWNING
This was one of the even fights and I'm not surprised there wasn't a KO here. Both girls were evenly matched but Jeanette made the same error as against Sanderson, she wore herself out in the early rounds and was pummelled around in the latter stages. No wonder the judges favored Browning. I need Jeanette to learn how to wins those fights, she hasn;t developed a proper haymaker just yet and this was a copy of her loss against Sanderson. I understand she wants to have a piece of Samia Smith very soon and is still upset about me skipping her in the BBU tournament. Well, the way Heidi Range has presented herself in her three fights quite clearly shows why I've chosen her instead.

SCHWARZ/MARAIS
The last one which I had a lock for us. Our Jessica was just way too experienced on international level but another KO in Round 1. I feel like being spoiled. Schwarz surely made amends for Biedermann's defeat. Germany isn't just over yet!

RUBIO/BASSINGTHWAIGHTE
I felt like this one could decide it all. Both girls pretty even with one loss in interntional competition. Pilar was really upset after her loss and also the fact I've skipped her for the BBU champs. She promised me a real slugfest out there and didn't want the judges to steal the victory away like she thought was the case with Leilani Dowding. A very convincing KO as she dominated the Aussie girl.

BLEAKLEY/CORNISH
Possibly the biggest mismatch in favor of the Aussies. Cornish should be making headlines worldwide soon, how come she only won twice in FCBA is beyond me. She easily dispatched Christine who tried her best but was always destined to lose via knockout. Good job for Cornish nonetherless!

SALMON/TAYLOR
I feared for this one, I expected Taylor being a bit too much for Zoe even though she's not exactly a powerhouse either. If Zoe had a more skilled fighter against her, she'd be KO'd in R1 herself. Well deserved win for Taylor and I need to work some magic if Zoe wants to win a fight soon. Code red for her on my list.

KURKOVA/HAWKINS
The second fight which I though could decide it all. Words cannot express my delight on the final result as Jennifer Hawkins was an extremely tough opponent. I hope Karolina and her can have a rematch some time in the future. I was hoping for this one going our way but it could have easily gone the other way. I hope this fight fulfilled the pin-up criteria 100% I simply can't wait for Karolina's fights in BBU champs now!

HOWARD/MacPHERSON
The verdict's on Sophie after this one. If Zoe Salmon is code red, then Sophie is double red and rising. I could have understand anything, but getting knocked out by a 40+ something in three rounds! Either Elle is still the master cougar or Sophie is just that weak. I could have done a better job against Elle but for the fact I'm retired now. We got humiliated at the end as this was our worst defeat of them all. Guess MacPherson's status as Australia's best female boxer of all time is still undisputed!

A special mention for Kim Davies who knocked Liz Hurley out in impressive fashion. Guess those cougars are mighty dangerous DownUnder. I have taken a serious notice of that!

All in all, we hope for a rematch with the Australian girls some time in the future, perhaps on our own turf this time. The small re-schedule glitch has been well and truly forgotten, I think it actually gaves us a favor looking by the final score. We wish Mr. Baudo and his stable the best of luck around the world and look forward to see his girls in action as often as possible.

How was that Kate? I may work as PR speciallist now after this one!

Kate: I couldn't have said it better myself, Gina, but work your magic on Heidi and Jessica cause there won't be so much joy after the BBU quarterfinals conclude.
Gina: Don't you worry my dear, I hope we make the semis with at least two girls. Just wait and see...

"DOWNUNDER, THE WASH UP< KEAR'S KATS & ASYLUM"

Posted by Green and Gold Magazine on 10/12/2011, 11:23 pm

Kimberley enters the Palladium and is immediately smacked in the face by the gush of hot stinky air and loud music generated by a gym of boxers working overtime and the new Vanessa Amorosi single "Amazing" belting through the sound system.

There are noteable absentees. No signs of Naomi, the Ems and Jess, but there are a couple of new faces in the shape of Holly Valance and Poppy Montgomery working in separate rings.

Kylie is shadow boxing next to Danni, offering up a few tips as Kimberley catches her attention.

Kylie: Davo, nasty shiner you've got there.

Kimberley: Worthwhile considering the shape of Hurleys face on Monday morning. I broke her nose.

Kylie: Nice. It was silly of her to get in that ring again, she should be listening to her head trainer.

Kimberley: You know she has already told Knowlesy she wants a rematch.

Kylie: Your kidding. She's a glutten for punishment.

Kimberley: I'm more than happy to get in the ring with her again. What is with all of us veterans getting back into it lately? Must be something in the water.

Kylie: Put it down to a mid life crisis.

Danni: You're passed mid life sis. I must have killed a few brain cells when I knocked you out at the gala dinner. Getting in the ring with Pink....your on drugs.

Kimberley: I must admit even I'm not silly enough to accept that fight.

Kylie: I don't mind taking one for the team.

Kimberley: What is that supposed to mean?

Kylie: It's an FCBA fight, this sort of exposure for Downunder is fantastic. And who knows what will happen on the night. I've got a knock out punch, she has a chin. It might be a solid one but you just never know.

Kimberley: Well good luck with that. Is anyone else heading over?

Kylie: I bloody hope so. I'm not flying all the way to US without a team. Best you check with Baudo.

Kimberley: Is he around?

Kylie: Sure is. We haven't seen him leave his office since Monday morning. He has been in there licking his wounds since the 4-5 defeat.

Kimberley saunters passed two rings, one containing Elle and Poppy, the other containing Nikki and Holly. Holly looking sharp, lightly fought over the last 4 years, getting prepared for her BBU bout against Sarah Manners. She gives Kimberley a quick wave between punches. Poppy in preparation for her Asylum bout against Olivia Munn, doesn't have time for pleasantries, looking more determined than ever. Abbie is working the bag and NatBass is resting on a bench nursing a serious shiner. Michelle and Sarah are on the ropes.

She enters Baudo's office, finding the man hunched over in his chair, rubbing each temple with his forefingers.

Kimberley: Hey Baudo.

Baudo: Kim

Kimberley: You ok?

Baudo: Do I look ok?

Kimberley: Mate don't let it get to you, these things happen.

Baudo: Kim if it wasn't for you, the fans may have had nothing to cheer about on Sunday night. The pain of losing a series on home soil is bad enough but we now have an injury list as long as my right arm. Emilie is looking at a 3 month lay off. Naomi has been told not to fight for at least a month yet we have already contracted her to fight Helen Flannigan in a BBU card later in the month. She'll be lucky to come out of that one alive. Jess may not fight again, the poor girl is still in hospital with a neck injury that I can't even pronounce....

Kimberley: Baudo, there was a lot to take away from the night though. Emily is 2 from 2 against quality opponents in Samia Smith and Jeanette Biedermann and if you want, include her effort on the beach against the self professed greatest flyweight ever, Hayden Panettiere, Em's in a good space at the moment. She should be challenging Michelle Keegan or Gemma Merna for the BBU title. Rach proved she is coming on, that was a gutsy win over Zoe Salmon and we actually saw power from her that we have never seen before. Who breaks a rib with a body punch like that? Abbie was at her best, even though against a less experienced fighter. For all the noise the King Of All Boxing is making, her match up agaisnt Keeley Hazell is going to be a cracker. And Elle was fantastic. She beat a real up and comer, 20 years younger than her. She is going to have to beat girls like that week in week out. You weren't disgraced.

Baudo: that's what I like about you Kim, you always see the best in a bad situation.

Kim: That's what I am here for.

Baudo: Lets get Abbie, Elle and Kylie in here for a quick chat.

Baudo calls his girls in. Abbie finishes up on the bag and Kylie completes her one on one with her sister. Poppy takes a stool as Elle leaves the ring.

Baudo: How is my favourite PA this morning?

Abbie: Great thanks Baudo, fighting fit.

Baudo: Ready for Keeley Hazell?

Abbie: Ready as I will ever be.

Baudo: So it may look like I have been sulking in the office for three days but I have been busy stitching a few things up. The Kear's Kats card is all but done. Alli has been good to us, allowing us to withdraw Emily, Jen and Jess from the card, and get Danni, Poppy and Holly on there. Abbie and Keeley is a done deal. I am stoked about this. The King is ranting and raving about Keeley being the best thing going around so it’s the best match up for Abbie at the moment. Might make this so called King eat humble pie.

Abbie: I won’t let you down Baudo.

Baudo: Now the dilemma is that Poppy has her PPV fight against Olivia Munn and shortly after that she has her Kear’s fight against Kimberly Walsh.

Kylie: If Katy Perry can go back to back then Poppy can do it. Tractorpull are predicting Munn by a decision so if this is the worst case, we won’t have to wrap Poppy in bandages against Walsh.

Baudo: Elle what to do we know about her?

Elle: As with a good portion of the US fighters, not much. We know enough to know not to focus on her wins but focus on her losses. She lost to Perabo in a unanimous decision. She has been shutting girls down early which might suggest she doesn’t have the endurance to go the distance in a fight. We won’t leave anything to chance, Poppy can knock her out.

Baudo: See to it that she does. Now what do know about the Kear’s girls.

Elle: Three fifths of stuff all.

Baudo: Listen Elle, if we go into this under prepared and I see a repeat performance of the Lioness debarkle, you and Nikki will be scrubbing these floors with a toothbrush.

Elle: Relax Baudo, we will do our homework. I had a fight to prepare for last time which was not ideal.

Baudo: Elle if you can’t manage fighting and the head trainer role then make a choice. I am not in the mood for excuses like that. Get both your jobs done or else.

Silence rains over the office as Baudo puts the greatest boxer in AWUBA history right back in her place.

Baudo: None of you are indispensable. After Sunday night, it occurred to me the challenge we have ahead of us. You girls have a job to do which is to ensure we are 100% prepared for every fight. Know your opponent inside out. Then if we have girls falling like tall timbers, at least I can say I am proud of the effort. But I am sitting here right now looking at my list knowing that we went in underdone. Not good enough. So you’ve heard it, I don’t care who you are, shape up or ship out.

Elle: It was just as hard for us to watch Baudo, it won’t happen again.
Baudo: Ok, now I have just got off the phone to Knowlesy from the BBU. He is interested in some match ups for a Card in early November which means we are going to be as busy as a dog with two dicks. The obvious one for me is Browning/Keegan or Browning/Merna.

Kylie: Danni will have something to say about that.

Baudo: Danni doesn’t run the gym.

Kylie: We have to get her something, she hasn’t fought since you announced she was back.

Baudo: There are other flyweights in the BBU that we can suggest for Danni. What else have we got.

Abbie: NatBass indicated she wants another go at Alesha Dixon.

Baudo: That might happen but maybe NatBass might want to put a couple of fights between that rematch. How about we try and line up Rochelle Wiseman for you Abbie? In the hope of Sabrina Washington after that?

Abbie: Keeley Hazell and Rochelle Wiseman that close together. Tough but I think I could accomplish that.

Baudo: That’s my girl. What else have we got?

Elle: I’m not fighting the Kears card so I would like to in the mix.

Kylie: I thin Denise Lewis is keen to fight you, that would be a great fight.

Baudo: She got stuck into you after you beat Liz, could be a goer.

Elle: Make it happen Baudo.

Baudo: I think we need to have a good think about this because the suggestions aren’t coming on too thick. Abbie and Kylie, you better stick around with me for a bit so we can nut this out.

Kim: Before we wrap it up, I saw your update on the AWUBA fights earlier this week. Is this something you would like Green and Gold to cover?

Baudo: I would be more than happy for you to take the coverage off my plate.

Kim: Done.

Baudo: That’s it then, we’re done.

Kim: Oh one more thing, who are you sending over for the Asylum card.

Baudo: Well at this stage, I'll be heading over with Kylie, Elle and Nikki. I can only cover the team and I'll take you with me Kim so you can cover the card.

Kim: What about Poppy's PPV?

Baudo: Yes well I think it would be nice to take the whole team there. Look find out how close the events are and maybe we can take the whole team. We have a lot on our plate at the moment and a few weeks in the US is not ideal timing.
