BBU Stable Flyweight Tournament: Quarterfinals
Posted by Vassago on 10/16/2011, 4:43 am
The fourth quarterfinal of the BBU Championship tournament in the flyweight division features Adele Silva from Kear's Kats (6-2, 6 KO) and former flyweight champion Gemma Merna from the Beever's Babes (4-3, 3 KO).
Adele Silva returns to championship competition after losing out to Dannielle Brent in December last year while Gemma Merna also seeks revenge after being stripped of the flyweight crown by Michelle Keegan this past July.

Round 1:
Both girls are wary of their past results and expectations coming into this tournament so unsurprisingly the first round is very tactical with only some single jabs being thrown from each side. Merna looks more agile on her feet trying to lure her opponent into an early attack but Silva keeps the distance. Merna throws an encouraging combination aimed at Silva's head but the punches cut through the air as the older blonde easily anticipates her rival's moves. There's little action to speak of inside the first round as nobody was willing to take any risks at this early stage.
Round 2:
The stalemate continues early in the second round, but Merna finally loses her patience and comes in with some aggression. She delivers some wild swing at Silva and manages to push her into a corner. Solid jabs land on Adele's stomach before she covers up and clinches. Gemma wants to shrug her off, but Adele leans forward and forces the younger blonde to center of the ring. Merna is upset about the lost advantage but has little time to think about it as Adele lands a solid jab on her ribs and continues with more low hooks to the midsection. The momentum has switched into Silva's favor but the bell stops her from any further progress.
Round 3:
Gemma lands a good hook on Adele's left cheek early in the third round, but can't follow it up as Silva quickly hassles away from her. Merna tries to pin Silva along the ropes, but can't get close enough to inflict any serious damage and gets treated with a couple of big punches to the chest. Adele has spotted this being Gemma's weakness and continues to pepper her breasts together with a solid uppercut that skims off her chin. That was a close call for the former champ who struggles a lot in this round and clinches in the final moments as Adele catches her breath as well.
Round 4:
Aggressive start from Merna again as she forces a stiff guard from Silva who blocks off several big hits to the head. Gemma swings at Adele's ribs and delivers a lot of punishment and it's Adele's time to back against the ropes. Gemma shows signs of the former glory and dominates the older blonde beating her up without much resistance but Silva manages to escape serious trouble by displaying excellent footwork technique and speed. Merna easily gets one round back but walks to her stool very frustrated. She scored a lot of hits but neither of them really rocked Silva too much.
Round 5:
Adele returns the favor with some heavy hooks to Gemma's face that catch the ex-champ off guard. This time Silva throws in something more than just speed & technique. Halfway through the round she lands the biggest punch of the contest to date when she slams straight through Gemma's gloves and romps her in the face with a swinging left-hook. Most of the crowed moaned together with Gemma as they've felt that haymaker all along as well. Adele follows it up with a couple of uppercuts that are blocked by Merna who leans forward and tries to clinch. She manages to remain in center of the ring but soon backs away and wants to catch a breath after that big hit. Adele chases her with some single punches along the ropes and finally manages to trap her in a corner. Several big blows really soften Merna up, but she is saved by the bell in the middle of Silva's furious barrage.
Round 6:
Gemma's left eye has begun to swell during the interval and it doesn't get any better after Adele works some fine techniques with a right-left combination to the ribs before more uppercuts inflict even more damage. Gemma is slow getting her guard up and Adele punishes her on a permanent basis with a number of jabs and hooks. Things are starting to look really bad for the ex-champ as she is pummelled and shoved around the ring by Silva who looks in much better shape.
Round 7:
Finally Gemma manages to get something going by pounding Adele's face with a series of jabs, but it's short-lived and Gemma struggles to breath as she's taken far too many punches to the ribs and chest. Silva clinches in the center of the ring but then quickly hits the former champ several times in the ribs and forces her along the ropes. Gemma looks really tired and gets pummelled around the corner post before taking yet more straight jabs to face and head. She covers up and ducks low to avoid the flurry of punches that come her way but Adele still keeps her calm and peppers the hapless rival with single punches instead. No really big hits scored but Adele settles in full control over Gemma.
Round 8:
Adele plays the waiting game and invites Gemma into coming back at her. Merna refuses at first, but then lands a good combination to the stomach and another uppercut goes wide soon afterwards. Silva responds with some single hooks and jabs before pummelling Gemma's breasts again. This really sets Merna back and she gets pushed into the corner where Silva starts to manhandle her in a one-sided fashion. Several bigs hits land on Gemma's face and body and with thirty seconds left on the clock, she finally leaves her guard completely open which enables Adele to crush her jaw with a big hook. Gemma falls down flat on the mat and Adele thinks she's won this one right here and then before Merna manages to beat the count at eight. She immediately clinches after the fight resumes and pushes Adele back along the ropes. It's not a pretty piece of boxing but allows the struggling former champion into surviving into Round Nine.
Round 9:
Gemma feels like she needs to attack and despite looking much worse to wear than her opponent, she throws a big combination to start the penultimate round which sends Adele back along the ropes. Gemma jumps at her and looks for a follow up, but the strength and stamina isn't there anymore and the much faster Adele skips to the right and circles around the frustrated Merna. The Kear's Kats' corner is getting louder with every moment as they see that Merna doesn't have anything under her belt to threaten their girl. More fruitless punching from Gemma doesn't make her cause any better and Adele is happy to keep the distance and literally wear her rival out. Gemma breaths really heavily inside the last half a minute and shakes her head when the bell brings this round to a close.
Round 10:
Adele is happy with that one-knockdown in Round Eight as she feels she's done enough to keep her opponent at bay. Nonetheless she works on Gemma's swollen eye and peppers it with single jabs and hits to further enhance the damage. It's almost all over bar the shouting and Merna looks like she's accepted the defeat. There's not much passion and heart being shown from the former champ and Silva underlines her dominance by trapping the heavy breathing rival in the corner and pounding her with series of blows to chest and head. Gemma covers up and allows Adele to land a number of unanswered hits. It's sad to watch as Merna looks like a random journeywoman being schooled by the most unexpected of teachers. Bell sounds for the final time and stops her misery as Adele Silva has well and truly beaten her up and looked in much better shape both physically and mentally as the contest went on.
Judges score the bout 99-92, 99-93 and 99-91 all in favour of ADELE SILVA who advances to the semifinal where she will face Emma Bunton.
Meanwhile some questions need to be asked regarding Gemma Merna who looked nothing like the champion she used to be just few months ago. Following the title bout loss to Michelle Keegan back in July, she has since fought Kara Tointon and was handed a tough defeat before falling at the first hurdle again tonight. Does the Beever's Babes management plan to give Gemma's career a fresh start anytime soon? Living on past glory has been pretty lethal to her reputation and allowed many other BBU flyweights to move past her in the pecking order.
Final result: Adele Silva def. Gemma Merna UD10.
