BBU Stable Bantamweight Tournament: Quarterfinals

As the reigning BBU Bantamweight Champion (8-1-0 in 2011), Double A Boxing’s Una Healy enters the tournament confident of success. She faces Jennifer Metcalfe (3-2-0 in 2011) of Beever’s Babes. “It makes no difference if Healy has the belt,” Jennifer declares, “this tournament starts us all on equal terms.” Una replies coyly: “But I think it fair to say ‘Some of us are more equal than others’ After all I knocked Metcalf out last time. I see no reason for that not to happen again.” Jennifer is not amused. In the ring, Jennifer is in a lacy red bra and panties. Una is dark blue bra and panties. Red gloves for Jen, light blue gloves for Una.

Round 1:

The fans have barely settled into their seats when they are out of them again as Una and Jen throw themselves at each other in a furious attempt to snatch a quick victory. Punch counts go soaring as the two girls swap head and body punches with no thought of series defense. HEALY GOES DOWN! Quick left hook to the jaw and a follow-up sweeping right on the chin sends the AA boxer sprawling to her side. Jennifer bouncing up and down in excitement as the ref moves for the count. Una beats the count, but seems dazed and Jennifer rushes back in eager to dish out more punishment. However Una turns her shoulder into the charge to block it, then she swings a wide right straight into Metcalfe’s unguarded temple. Jennifer’s legs buckle and Una shifts position to pummel punches into Jennifer’s belly. Metcalf gasps and lurches forward. POW! Una Healy uppercut under Jennifer’s chin lifts the BB girl up on her toes and then she topples backwards. Spectacular crash onto the canvas by Jennifer who lays there as her breast cups slosh back and forth, groaning with shock. Grinning Una Healy goes to neutral corner, but somehow Jennifer Metcalfe rolls to her side, then to her knees and then up on shaky legs to beat the count. Una shrugs and moves back in, but Jennifer immediately goes defensive using clinches and hands-in-gloves to buy herself recovery time. Una keeps active and edges Metcalfe out on cards. Both fighters’ faces are lumped up and reddening after this barn-burner opening stanza.

Round 2:

Both fighters more cautious this round, but Jennifer Metcalfe works hard, moving and shifting around, looking to land against Una Healy. It takes her a while, but she starts landing regularly to Healy’s ribs, getting in under her elbow and taking an opportunistic shot at Una’s face whenever she gets an opening. Una reluctantly to go defensive, tries to counterpunch to score points, but she gets the worst of it. Left cheekbone getting noticeably red and swollen. Jennifer’s aggressiveness gets her a narrow win on the cards.

Round 3:

Jennifer continues on the offensive and she is really working that left cheek. She’s got Una hurting and Healy forced to protect the injured cheek with a high guard. This, of course, leaves large swaths of Healy midsection open and Jennifer Metcalfe happily goes after it with deep, hungry punches that causes Una to retreat. Late the round, Una finally remembers her jab and she smacks some accurate punches into Jennifer’s mouth and nose. Jen’s head pushed back and blood trickles out of nostril, but Metcalfe starts to bob and weave, making herself less of a target. Then as Una lunges after Jen, Metcalfe gets in a sudden right uppercut and HEALY STUMBLES TO HER KNEES! Una up quickly, insisting it was a stumble, though referee insists on 8 count. Jennifer finishes up the round again ahead of the champ. Crowd buzzing with growing excitement: are they about to witness an upset?

Round 4:

Una not pleased with how this fight is going. She comes out with aggression, trying her best to drive Jennifer Metcalfe back to the ropes. Jen dogged stands her ground in heavy shelling. The two just standing there shoulder to shoulder, heaving leather into body (mostly) and head (sometimes). Goes on and on as the crowd’s hysteria mounts, but suddenly Una Healy is back off! She’s punished Jennifer to the body, but the close-in exchange as punished her as well. Metcalfe punch has re-started Healy’s nose bleed, probably what forced the champ to break it off. Metcalfe tries to follow, but Una’s accurate jabbing blunts Jen’s with good shots to the belly that force Metcalfe to cover up. Jennifer takes another narrow round, but she goes back to her stool look worn.

Round 5:

Una’s nose is stuffed with more cotton and she comes out with fresh determination. Her punches to Metcalfe’s flanks are very solid and they are ravaging Jen’s already battered ribs. As Jen tries to protect her ribs, her head opens up and Una swiftly pours in a sudden torrent of punches. Jen banged in the mouth, nose and eyes, reels back and hit’s the ropes. At last, Una Healy has Jennifer Metcalfe where she wants her and she is merciless working her way from head to body and back up to head. Una ducks down low to bring up a right uppercut from near her ankles to smash into Jen’s wide open jaw as the Beever’s Babe lolls against the ropes. Impact lifts Jen off her feet, shoulders and head actually going over the top rope! Fierce combination punching to the Metcalfe belly and Jennifer just topples forward against Una, her face sliding down the champ’s sweat soaked body before landing on the canvas as Healy’s feet. Una quickly moves out of the way to make room for the referee. Jennifer makes a valiant attempt to push herself up off the canvas, but suddenly her arms give out and she collapses back to the canvas as the referee makes to 10. Una Healy the KO5 winner.

After: Crowd cheers wildly. Una’s victory not unexpected, but Jennifer Metcalfe clearly gave her more of a fight than she expected. Una not pleased about it either. As soon as Metcalfe is revived, Una scoops her defeated opponent and gives her a walk of shame around the ring. “I just wanted her to know there was no mistake about: I am the better fighter!” Una explains later. Jennifer Metcalfe says: “I scared it, that’s what it was. Maybe I wasn’t able to finish the job--but I showed everyone she’s vulnerable after all!”
