BBU Stable Bantamweight Tournament: Quarterfinals

Lioness Club bantam Melanie Brown in black bikini and red gloves faces off against Foxfire Atlantic’s Leilani Dowding in red bikini and black gloves. Both eager to use this tournament to advance their BBU careers and clearly anxious to have at one another, both bouncing up and down in the prefight.

Round 1:

Bell rings and the two fighters rocket out of their corners for a furious initial exchange in midring that brings the crowd to its collective feet. Nothing fancy, just robust slugging at one another’s heads, chests and sides. Heads knocked back and side to side. Legs put a-tremble and knees buckle. LEILANI GOES DOWN! Downing sits on her red bikini bottoms a dazed look on her face, but she gets back and goes right after Melanie Brown. She charges Mel, driving her back towards the ropes with a straight rights and lefts to the face. As Mel’s bottoms hit’s the strands, Leilani drops down and lunges up with a beautiful right uppercut to the chin. The Lioness Club beauty’s chin shoots up and knees give way. She ends up in a heap, leaning back against the ropes and looking forlorn. Leilani snarling, has to be forced back by the ref and this actually delays the start the count. Melanie takes advantage of the count regain her senses and is up by 8. When Leilani comes charging back in she is met by Melanie’s sharp jab that brings the charge to an abrupt halt. Leilani obliged to get defensive herself. Brown shifts to offense, doesn’t do much damage as Dowding covers up face-in-gloves, but she gets a narrow win on points.

Round 2:

Melanie back on the offensive as Leilani seems overly cautious. Dowding does use her jab, but not too effectively as Brown keeps pressing her with a steady drumbeat of punches. Most go to the body as Mel tries to push Leilani into the ropes, but she sees an opening and gets in a short left cross to the jaw. Dowding spins around and falls onto the ropes, her arms hanging over the top rope as she slowly sags to her knees. Big smile Melanie Brown as she goes to neutral corner. Leilani beats the count, but she looks shaken. Leilani covers up as Melanie comes back in. Brown has to settle for working Dowding’s flanks over to the bell. Big Melanie Brown round.

Round 3:
Melanie resumes the offensive, but Leilani in full defensive mode. Melanie dances around the covered up Leilani actually taunting her: “Come out and fight!” She jeers. Crowd’s not too happy with Leilani either adding some boos and catcalls. However Dowding keeps her cool, late in the round she comes out of the turtle defense with a good jab to the chin that startles Melanie and makes her step back. Leilani moves after her, but she is unable to land anything solid before the round ends.

Round 4:

During break Foxfire Atlantic’s head trainer Sophia Myles seen talking quietly, but urgently to Leilani. Dowding hasn’t looked good for most of the last two rounds and clearly needs to take the offensive. Melanie Brown, of course, determined to keep control of this fight and the two meet in a well-fought series of exchanges around the ring. Melanie working the Dowding body, while Leilani keeps countering to the head, though much of her initial efforts are being blocked. Then Leilani plants an unexpected combination into Brown’s tummy catching the Lioness Club fighter by surprise. Melanie lurches forward and Leilani unleashes that right uppercut into Brown’s chin. MELANIE BROWN ROCKED! The Lioness Club fighter still on her feet, but she flounders around helpless as Leilani keeps in front of her pounding that chin and jaw. Then she plants a hard sweeping right cross in behind Melanie’s ear and Brown crashes to her side. This time Leilani retreats promptly to her neutral corner as Melanie Brown struggles to rise. She actually makes it to her feet, but she is weaving as she stands. Referee doesn’t like what he sees when he checks her eyes. THE REF STOPS THE FIGHT!

After: While Leilani Dowding basks in the cheers of the crowd and the congratulations of Sophia Myles, Melanie Brown bursts into angry tears and begs the referee to reconsider the stoppage, but the official stands firm. Melanie finally led away by her corner people, but The Lioness Club, too, said to be very unhappy with this decision. “Mel was winning that fight. Sure she had her bell rung, but she insists she could have gone on. The referee should have given her the chance.” one confidential LC source tells the press. Foxfire Atlantic Boxing has no public comment, but privately, FAB sources sniff: “ Leilani won. Melanie lost. They should just deal with it.”
