BEFORE:
"Minogue didn't have to come over here," says Pink. "She's a huge star in Australia, and she could make just as much money with a dozen other fights over there. She didn't have to do this, and I appreciate it. Now, that's not going to stop me from giving her a beating, because that's what Pinkness DOES when she gets in the ring, but, believe me I respect her for having the guts to fight me. Not everyone does."
"Why am I here," says a smiling Kylie, sexy Aussie accent on full display. "Well, I'm here to win! Pink's a Top 20 fighter, no doubt, but, don't forget, I've got a LOT more experience than she does. I haven't fought over here much, but I've been doing this 20 years in Australia. I know how beat girls like Pink. I've done it before. And I'll do it tonight."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and Pink isn't just talking the respect talk, she's walking the walk. That's 'Trouble' on the sound system, and Pink is coming out first, giving the championship position to Kylie Minogue! Pink into the ring, drops the robe, and there's that familiar black bikini with the white skulls. Gotta like a girl who starts the intimidation with the wardrobe!"
McCarthy: "Well, that might work against SOME girls, but not against real fighters like me..."
O'Dell: "Crowd popping big as 'I Should Be So Lucky' booms through the Asylum and here comes Kylie Minogue, bouncing down to ringside with the Downunder Boxing contingent, smiling, slapping glove against hands with some fans along the aisle. Kylie into the ring, helped off with the robe to reveal a crimson bikini that she definitely has the body to pull off!"
McCarthy: "SHE could have been a Playmate. Not a Playmate of the Year, probably, but a Playmate..."
O'Dell: "Folks in the U.S. might not know this, Mac, but Kylie is as big a star as Pink internationally. This card is being broadcast live to the UK, Australia and New Zealand, due to the international appeal of fighters like Kylie, a pretty shrewd move by the Wiz and Avril..."
McCarthy: "Who's translating for the audience in New Zealand?"
O'Dell(rolling her eyes): "I think they're using subtitles, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Well, to all our friends in New Zealand, Feliz Navidad!"
Tess: "I...no...too easy..."
McCarthy: "Who are you calling 'easy', Walmart?"
O'Dell: "Mac, if you're through making people rewind DVRs across 16 time zones, could we have your take on this fight?"
McCarthy: "I think you have to make Pink the favorite here. Kylie's slick and experienced, but Pink's stronger, younger, quicker. I don't think experience can overcome all of that."
O'Dell: "Well, let's find out. There's the bell and here we go. Pink moving forward immediately. Kylie looking to circle and jab, doesn't want to work in close, obviously."
McCarthy: "That would be a mistake against Pink. Pink's a very well balanced fighter, but, what makes her so dangerous is that she's got a lot of power for a bantam. Unless you've got J-Mac power, you don't want to stand toe-to-toe with her."
O'Dell: "Minogue trying to stick and move, but Pink keeping up the pressure, closing, going body, forcing Kylie backward. Minogue jabbing for space, but Pink pressuring, moving the head, hooking the flanks. LEFT HOOK TO THE CHIN AND DOWN GOES KYLIE!"
McCarthy. "Didn't land flush! Minogue saw it at the last second. Got the head back, but not far enough."
O'Dell: "Minogue up at at seven. Takes the eight count. Referee waives Pink forward. Kylie's jabbing and moving. Covers up as Pink sets to get off, then gone by the time she starts punching. Slick stuff."
McCarthy: "Minogue not badly hurt here. Playing this smart. Moving. Using the legs. Pink disciplined as always. Working her way forward. Looking to follow, but not getting wild or sloppy trying to finish."
O'Dell: "Kylie popping out that left, circling right, away from power. Pink lands to the body, Minogue covers, Pink sets, Kylie's gone. Great timing by the Aussie. That's the round."
McCarthy: "10-8 Pink for sure, but Kylie doing well to avoid a jailbreak."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second round underway, and Kylie's back on her bicycle. Looking to stick and move. Pink pressuring, cutting the ring off. In behind a nice left jab. Landing it there, following up with a hook to the ribs. Minogue covers up. Blocks a couple, slips away to the right. Kylie feathering the jab out there. Not looking to engage."
McCarthy: "Good strategy for Minogue. Again, doesn't want to trade with Pink."
O'Dell: "Pink patient, though. Not forcing. Working forward. Finding the range with the jab. Content to land a punch at a time if necessary as Kylie denies the follow up with the feet. Minogue lands a left. Pink a right hook to the ribs. Kylie ties up. Referee breaks and Minoge back moving."
McCarthy: "Kylie hoping to lure Pink into something, but Pink isn't biting. Content to score and pursue."
O'Dell: "Pink doubles the jab. Kylie ducks an overhand right and gets out of town. Bell. Pink's round."
McCarthy: "No question. Pink up 20-17 early."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third stanza underway and Kylie back on the bike. Pink again trying to pressure. Minogue using the jab to slow the pursuit, working the legs to stay in open canvas. Pink lands to the ribs, but Kylie slips away, pops the jab. Back to the center."
McCarthy: "Pretty good plan by Minogue. Don't know if she can stay on the toes ten rounds at her age, but..."
O'Dell: "They say the same things about YOU at this point, Mac..."
McCarthy: "ME? WHO does? I can DANCE ALL NIGHT..."
Tess: "As long as there's a stripper pole on the stage..."
McCarthy: "SHUT it, Walmart!"
O'Dell: "Kylie may not be able to do it all night, but she's doing it here. Pink patient. Not forcing. Minogue scoring, hitting, running. Pink landing some to the body, but not able to put them together."
McCarthy: "This is the difference between a solid fighter like Pink and green kids like Ke$ha and Perry. She's not going to walk into anything. She'll stay patient and sound."
O'Dell: "Minogue a double pump jab as the round ends. Pink a bemused smile wants to tap gloves. Kylie's game. Smiles back. Pink shaking the head on the way back to the corner. Didn't think the Aussie still had it in her."
McCarthy: "She does at the moment. Minogue's round and she's back in the fight at 29-27."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Round four underway and Kylie circling again behind that jab. Pink working in, looking to cut the ring off. Willing to take a jab or two to do it. Kylie trying to reverse motion. Pink lands a left, hooks the body with the right, Kylie squirts away, but Pink right back there."
McCarthy: "Pink's fighting smart here. Slowly working Kylie back toward the ropes. Matching the motion. Not letting her back to open canvas."
O'Dell: "Pink lands a one-two. Works Kylie into the ropes. Minogue bobbing and weaving, catching punches on the shoulders and gloves, countering slick. Pink getting the better of things in close though. Landing in combination. Banging lefts to the belly. Good right hook to the side of the head. Kylie ties up. Referee breaks. Minogue looking for room, but Pink not giving her any. Crowding. Working the body."
McCarthy: "Look at Kylie's upper body movement here. Even against the ropes, not giving Pink a stationary target. Minogue's a crafty fighter."
O'Dell: "Pink going downstairs for points here, lathering the lats as Kylie ties up again. There's the bell. That's the round. Good one for Pink."
McCarthy: "No question Pink's round. She's back out to a three point lead on my card, 39-36 through four. And, there were some folks who didn't think we'd GET through four. Those folks underestimated Kylie Minogue."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth round has begun and Pink's turned up the gas, Mac. Still patient, still sound, but ratcheting up the pressure. Cutting off the ring, getting in tight, working the body on the older woman."
McCarthy: "Pink starting to impose her will physically here. Creating the terms she wants."
O'Dell: "Kylie forced back against the ropes, ties up Pink's right arm, bangs a couple of short rights of her own home. Pink punches free, goes to the body, banging that belly and those ribs. Kylie slips free, lands a jab, heads back to open ocean, but not for long. Pink working in past the jab, cuts off the ring, lands a three-punch combo to the head. Kylie ties up, forced back to the ropes, ducks a left, blocks a right, lands a left hook."
McCarthy: "Minogue showing how slick she is. This is guile and craft here. This isn't how she wants to fight, but she's holding her own anyway."
O'Dell: "Kylie lands a short right. Pink counters with a left-right to the head. Minogue slips away again. Back toward the center, but Pink right on her, forcing her back. Lands a good straight right as the round ends."
McCarthy: "Another good round for Pink. 49-45 now. Points starting to add up against Kylie."

Minogue/Pink Part II

ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Getting ready for the sixth and Elle MacPherson giving Kylie some advice in the Downunder Boxing corner. They all look pretty pleased over there, and Elle looks like she could put the gloves on and take out any number of FCBA welters."
McCarthy: "Well, they have to be happy with how well Kylie's done so far."
O'Dell: "Sixth round now going and again it's Pink pressing. Moving forward in good order. Cutting the ring. Forcing battle. Kylie bobbing and weaving. Making herself hard to find. Pink backing her into the ropes again. Minogue ducking and showing a tight guard, still moving. Deflecting and dodging blows. Looking to counter."
McCarthy: "When you fight like Kylie is, you're looking for that one mistake. The one opening that can turn things around. Pink's not likely to give you one of those, though. Might have to make your own opportunity."
O'Dell: "Kylie certainly isn't giving Pink a good pitch to hit. The Front Streeter is landing some to both the head and body. Minogue can't match her. But Kylie's using that guile and pluck to frustrate Pink, make her work hard for everything."
McCarthy: "Pink working the ribs again. Kylie getting red in the rib and lat areas. She ties up, forces a break, lands a couple of jabs before Pink forces her back again. Lands a right lead and a left to the belly. That's the bell."
O'Dell: "Pink again, Mac."
McCarthy: "Sure was. 59-54 now."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "We're back to it and the terms remain the same. Pink pressuring. Kylie looking to stick and move, but the younger girl cutting off the ring, forcing battle, working Minogue into the ropes. Hooking the body. Kylie ducking, blocking, tying up an arm. Countering in spots."
McCarthy: "Minogue slick with the counter. And she's in awesome shape, no question. Showing no signs of fatigue as she continues to show Pink lots of movement and wrestes inside with a bigger, stronger girl."
O'Dell: "Pink working the belly with a couple of short hooks. Kylie counters with a straight right and slips free to the center. Pink right back after her. Not forcing. Patient. Working her back toward the ropes again."
McCarthy: "A little frustration for Pink here. Unable to get exactly what she wants. She's winning the round with the body work and pressure, getting Minogue against the ropes again and going to work, but Kylie countering just enough to keep the referee at bay. And managing to spoil a lot of punches here. She's like a good hitter that keeps fouling off good pitches."
O'Dell: "Pink lets the hands go! A couple landed, but Minogue deflected severa"m Kylie ties up. Bell rings. Pink again with a shake of the head and a smile. Almost giving props to the slick gutty Aussie as she heads back to the corner."
McCarthy: "69-63 Pink. Minogue will need a knockout now."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Round eight underway, and Minogue again looking to stick and move, but Pink again not having any. Cutting the ring off, dodging and blocking the jabs, getting inside, working body."
McCarthy: "This is pretty smart fighting by Pink. Kylie isn't really threatening her. If she just keeps boxing, she wins this fight. The mistake is to try to get a knockout, get sloppy, and get caught. And she's not doing that."
O'Dell: "Kylie tying up as Pink gets inside, trapping the arms. Pink punches free, lands some body shots and Minogue ties up again. Referee will break them apart. Kylie back toward the center. Not able to land the jab. Pink working inside it. Banging that bod again with hooks to the flanks. Scores with a short left to the head. Kylie ties up again. Pink shoves free and Minogue back to the center."
McCarthy: "Give Kylie some credit. She's surviving here. And still looking for the big punch."
O'Dell: "Not going to find it in the eighth. That's the bell, and Pink wins another."
McCarthy: "79-72 now. Nearly a whitewash, but, again, Kylie showing plenty of guile and willingness to compete. Not doing her reputation any harm, that's for sure."
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "We're into the ninth and, again, it's Kylie looking to move and Pink not going to allow it."
McCarthy: "Who'd have thought Minogue was in this kind of shape at this point in her career, Jenny? Ninth round and she can still get up on her toes!"
O'Dell: "Pink cuts the ring off, works Minogue backward with that left jab, hooking the belly with the right. Kylie tying up, squirts away to the right. Pops a couple of jabs. Reverse pivots. Pink follows along. Bobbing the head, working inside the jab. Back to the body. Minogue tying up around the head. Referee going to give them a fresh start."
McCarthy: "Pink shaking her head again. Knows what Minogue is doing here. Fighting to survive. Looking for the one big shot that could end it. Pink not going to give it to her. Not going to get reckless looking for the stoppage..."
O'Dell: "Pink sticking with the game plan, cutting Minogue's retreat off, working her into the ropes, going to the body. Lathering those lats. Minogue ties up around the head. Pink pulls away. Back a step. Gives Kylie room to land a jab. Pink back forward with a hook to the ribs and Minogue tying up again. Pink bangs a pair of hooks to the midsection before Minogue ties up the arms. Ref breaking them and that's the round."
McCarthy: "Pink again easily. I've got it 89-81."
ROUND TEN:
O'Dell: "Round ten underway with the bell and Minogue back on the bike. Amazing. Over 40 and in round ten, she still has legs. Pink working past the jab...Good right, Minogue! Surprised Pink with that one! Kylie circles, pops a jab, lands a straight right on the chin! Stopped Pink in her tracks, Mac!"
McCarthy: "Minogue letting them go now, nothing to lose! Lands another hard right! Pink tying up...now lashing back to the body with a right-left, hooking the ribs!"
O'Dell: "Kylie with a hard uppercut to the chin. Pink smiles and shakes her head, snaps Minogue's head with a jab, buries a hook to the kidney! Kylie with a flurry! Landed a couple to the head. Pink fires right back with a right hand lead that got Minogue's attention!"
McCarthy: "Wow! Take back what I said about Pink fighting smart! Why is she trading here?"
O'Dell: "Kylie back on the bike, popping out the jab. Lands a hard right! Pink fires back with a left-right to the head, Kylie ties up...nice uppercut, Minogue. Pink hooks the ribs. Kylie with a left hook behind the ear. Pink bangs a right to the side of the head! Minogue a left-right to the face. BELL! Round and fight over and what a round to end it!"
McCarthy: "Minogue won that round, Jenny. Isn't going to win the fight, but there's no doubt about the Aussie's heart and ring savvy!"
O'Dell: "She's got Pink's respect. The two fighters hugging as the bell rang. Don't remember Pink EVER doing that at the end of a fight. Decision being announced, and Mac was right on it. 98-91 for the winner by UD10, Pink!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go on up to the ring where Tess Valmore has our winner, Pink!"
Tess: "Pink, were you surprised by how hard Kylie competed?"
Pink: "Nah. Like I said before the fight, she didn't HAVE to come over here. So, I had no doubt she came to win. Now, that was NOT gonna happen against Pinkness, but I knew she'd give it all she had, you know?"
Tess: "That last round, you both opened it up pretty good. Not surprised SHE did, being so far behind but..."
Pink(laughing): "Yeah. I'm a dumba**, maybe. But I wasn't gonna run from her. Fight was ten rounds. If she wanted to fight all ten, then we were gonna fight all ten. She earned that. She's earned more fights in the FCBA, too, if she wants 'em. In case you haven't noticed, most girls aren't still standing at the end of fights with me." |
