BEFORE:
"Yeah, it's a big fight for me," says Nicole. "Halle's been the Queen of the Exotics for a long time. And don't kid yourself. She's still very good and very dangerous. But, if I'm going to get where I want to go... Well. There it is."
"You know, people have been saying Nicole's the heir-apparent to my throne for a while now," says Halle, smiling beautifully. "And you may be surprised to hear that I don't necessarily disagree with that. Here's the thing, though. The Queen's not ready to step aside just yet. And Nicole's about to find that out."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and, yet another show of respect from a Front Street fighter as 'Don't Cha' bangs out over the sound system and here comes Nicole Scherzinger!"
McCarthy: "Got to admit, I'm surprised the Dancing Hooker has class enough to let Berry come out second. Did I just say 'Class' and 'Scherzinger' in the same sentence?"
Tess: "I'm surprised your tongue doesn't catch fire if you say 'class' at ALL..."
McCarthy: "Shut it, Walmart!"
O'Dell: "Let's not discount the possibility that the Grand Wizard decided the order of entry..."
McCarthy: "Well, I'll NEVER say 'class' and 'The Grand Weirdo' in the same sentence!"
Tess: "You just DID!"
McCarthy: "SHUT IT, JOLLY GREEN GIANT!"
Tess: "Get stuffed, polymer bra!"
O'Dell(sighing again): "Nicole into the ring, slaps hands with Britney who exits the corner as Neve and Jewel take over again. Brit has a seat next to Wiz and Nicole drops the robe...wow...not many women are going to win the disrobe against Halle Berry, but Scherzinger in that hunter green number is certainly competition."
Tess: "No doubt about it, Jenny. Nicole is one of the most beautiful women in the FCBA..."
McCarthy: "PLEASE!"
O'Dell: "And that's 'She's Fine', otherwise known as 'The Halle Berry Song' and here comes Halle. Berry making her way to the ring with the crew from The Academy. Climbs into the ring, helped off with the robe and...well. I'm calling this one a draw after seeing that orange bikini..."
McCarthy: "If this was a prize fight, they'd stop it. That's how much Halle is blowing her away!"
Tess: "Um...this IS a prize fight, Brainless Wonder!"
McCarthy: "If I have to get out of this CHAIR, Walmart..."
O'Dell: "Ladies, please. The fans would like to see the fight, not 'Plan Ten From Outer Space: The Return Of Bruno' starring Michelle 'Bombshell' McGee and Judd Nelson."
McCarthy: "Michelle...HEY...I was up for that part!"
Tess: "This stuff writes itself..."
O'Dell: "And there's the bell. Scherzinger out hot looking to find Halle with that jab and work off it. Berry hard to find though. Moving the feet and upper body, giving Nicole angles, changing distance, tying up in close and working the body a bit. Referee breaks. Scherzinger lands a jab and Halle counters with a right hand. Berry blocks a right hand receipt and lands a double-pump jab. Scherzinger responds with a left and Berry ties up, lands a hook to the body."
McCarthy: "Halle having the better of things right now, Jenny. She's a slick veteran. She's not as fast as Nicole at this point, so she's using technique and experience to offset that, and it's working."
O'Dell: "Berry in and out here, bobbing left and right. Scherzinger landing the occasional jab, but not much else. Halle able to counter, mostly to the body, but landing the odd right hand to the head as well. Berry clinching, hooking the ribs. Referee breaks them, and there's the bell."
McCarthy: "Good, tactical defensive round for Halle. If she can keep Nicole off balance like this, it's going to be a good night for Ms. Berry."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "On to the second now and Nicole opens with a nice combination. Landed clean before Halle could get her hands up. Scherzinger sticks the jab. Again. Ducks a right hand counter. Sinks a hook into the ribs. Makes Berry miss with the jab. Again. Nicole able to use the speed effectively right now."
McCarthy: "Scherzinger's as quick as almost any bantam in the world. You can't let her pot shot you from out there or she'll pick you apart."
O'Dell: "Halle showing angles, using good head movement to limit things. But Nicole is finding the range here. Lands a left. Another. A third. Berry trying to get in closer, but Nicole not having any. Using the legs well to keep distance and get room to let the hands go."
McCarthy: "Halle lands a hook to the body, but Nicole responds with a left right to the head and bends back away from a whistling right from Berry. Scherzinger another jab. Another. Berry hooks the ribs, but Nicole sticks another in her face before circling and resetting. There's the bell and that's an excellent round for Nicole. Evens things up. And we've seen the game plans. If either girl gets her terms, the other is in trouble."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Into the third now and Halle looking crowding Nicole a bit, looking to counteract that speed advantage and work inside."
McCarthy: "Good strategy, not giving Nicky room to punch."
O'Dell: "Berry tying up inside, working the body. Scherzinger shoving her off, looking to get some room. Breaks free and circles. Popping the jab for space. Halle trying to close...good right Nicole! Stopped Halle in her tracks. Another! A third straight right lands and Berry covers up. Nicole putting punches together now. Throwing Halle onto the defensive."
McCarthy: "Berry's in trouble out there. She can't punch with Nicole at this distance. Scherzinger's too fast..."
O'Dell: "Nicole lands a nice three-punch combination. Berry tries a counter, but Scherzinger's chin's not there. Instead Nicky lands a double pump jab. Circles. Sets. Left-right land clean. Halle tying up. Covering up. Glad to hear the bell ring. Good round for Nicole."
McCarthy: "Definitely. Puts her ahead 29-28 through three."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "On to the fourth now and it's Halle backing up and Nicole moving forward. Total 180 from last round! Berry with a high guard. Scherzinger probing with the jab. Trying to locate. Halle elusive. Using her legs. Moving the head and shoulders. Keeping the guard up. Nicole not able to land. Pursuing as Berry retreats with that high guard. Halle times a nice counter! Caught Nicole flicking out the jab and landed a straight right. Nicole steps in behind the jab and Halle ties up, works the body with the free hand, baging the ribs."
McCarthy: "This is clever stuff from Berry. Wouldn't work on a veteran like ME, of course, but she's got Nicole out of rhythm."
O'Dell: "Referee breaks. Halle backing away again with the hands high. Nicole looking to cut the ring off. Can't do it. Halle showing too much movement. Too many angles. Nicole unable to land the jab. Berry countering with the right when she throws it. Tying up again. Digs a hook into the midsection. Referee breaks them. Nicole in dogged pursuit again. Halle waiting on her. Waiting for Nicole to let the hands go. Blocking. Countering, stepping in to smother and hook the body. Bell. Excellent round for Berry and Scherzinger clearly a little frustrated as she heads back to the corner."
McCarthy: "Slick stuff for Berry. Very, very slick."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Into the fifth and we have a pretty even fight so far, Mac..."
McCarthy: "I've got it dead even."
O'Dell: "Scherzinger looking determined to change that. Pursuing Berry with a purpose as Halle retreats, circles, looks to counter. Nicole snapping jabs, but she's short. Too far out. Halle able to dodge, slip right, land a counter. Scherzinger bobbing in place now. Trying to get Halle to get off first, but Berry's not buying."
McCarthy: "Halle's just looking to counter."
O'Dell: "Sure is. She circles back and right as Nicky moves forward again. Poking that jab out, can't locate with it. Halle a good right over top. Follows with a left hook to the ribs. Nicole lands a left, misses with a whistling right hook! Berry ducks, digs a pair of hooks to the body and ties Nicole up."
McCarthy: "Scherzinger's getting frustrated here. Berry's tactics have got her way off her game. Halle clinching, countering, very effective."
O'Dell: "Halle shoving Nicole backward, hooking those ribs, tying up, making Nicky take weight, getting rough in there. Scherzinger shoves Berry back in response. Lands a jab. Halle blocks the right, leans in, ties up, works the belly with a hook. Nicole shoves free. Lets a flurry go! Nothing much landing. Halle counters with a solid right, follows with a good left. Ties Nicole up and smothers her as the round ends."
McCarthy: "Berry just great on defense in that last exchange. Blocking, getting inside punches, then landing two counters. That's Halle's round and she's got the lead here!"
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "On to the sixth of a scheduled ten. And Scherzinger back on the hunt. Trying to use the jab to get distance. Halle using her own jab now to counter, hooks the body, passes the right elbow, goes BEHIND and sets up! Nicole spins around and takes a jab. Halle leans in, ties up, bangs the body. Nicky shoves her away and Scherzinger lands a flurry! Best stuff Nicole's managed to land in a couple of rounds. Halle steps inside, ties up, lands a hook. Referee breaks them."
McCarthy: "Nicole looking better this round. Able to land more consistently. But Halle's still dictating terms."
O'Dell: "Nicole lands a one-two right there. Halle using the jab to work in, hooking off of it. Nicole hooks back to the body and Halle ties up, forces a break. Berry feinting, showing angles, baiting Nicole into getting off, now countering with the right. Using the left jab to keep Nicole off balance. Scherzinger looking for spots to let the hands go. Landing when she does, but not able to get into rhythm."
McCarthy: "Like I said, Jenny, Nicole looking better, but she's not fighting her fight."
O'Dell: "Nice exchange there! Both women landed a couple of good ones. Nicole double pops the jab. Halle digs to the body. Bell rings. Good, competitive round!"
McCarthy: "It was, but Scherzinger's getting by on her speed. Being forced to react. She may have won that one. It was close. I'd give it to Scherzinger, but the judges may see it differently. But she's not going to win many rounds going along with Halle's game plan."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Into the seventh. This one is close so far. Both ladies looking to get some breathing room, and, at the moment, that's literally true for Nicole. She's looking to jab for room, get back to boxing in space, but Halle using that educated jab of hers to close, crowd, smother."
McCarthy: "I'm very impressed with what Berry's doing here. She's got a younger, faster girl totally frustrated here."
O'Dell: "And Scherzinger showing signs of that. Punching from bad angles at times. Trying to get something home. Berry taking advantage with the counters. Nicole relentlessly moving, trying to find places to fit punches. She's having success in spots. Good combination right there. But Berry quickly shuts her off. Smothers her, bangs the body, ties up, shoves free, sticks a pair of jabs, gets back in tight."
McCarthy: "Halle's dictating. Nicole's fighting exactly the fight Berry wants. She may have managed to squeak out the last round, but not this one. Berry's getting the better of it."
O'Dell: "Nicole working the jab. Lands that one, but Halle counters with a hard right, then hooks the ribs as the round ends. Another to Berry and we've got her on the lead, Mac."
McCarthy: "I've got it 67-66, but the judges may have the sixth even or for Berry, so it could be a wider margin."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Starting the eighth now and Scherzinger again in pursuit. Nicole may realize she's behind here. Trying to force the action a bit and..."
McCarthy: "DOWN GOES SCHERZINGER! RIGHT HAND COUNTER FROM BERRY!"
O'Dell: "Right landed flush and sent Nicole to her rump! Referee's count reaches eight and Nicole is up. Going to take the eight count here and the referee waives them together. Halle moving forward behind the jab. Nicole snaps out a left...AND DOWN SHE GOES AGAIN! BERRY TIMES THE RIGHT OVER SCHERZINGER'S LEFT!"
McCarthy: "It's over! She's not getting up from that..."
O'Dell: "She IS, Mac! Nicole up again at eight. Referee looking closely as he counts the mandatory eight. Going to let it go on. Here comes Berry. Banging the body now. Scherzinger clinching, covering up. Legs not working too well. Halle forcing her into the ropes, hooking the midsection...RIGHT HOOK AND SCHERZINGER'S DOWN AGAIN! HALLE WITH A RIGHT HOOK BEHIND THE LEFT GLOVE AND NICOLE COLLAPSES ALONG THE ROPES TO HER RIGHT."
McCarthy: "I can't believe this...she's getting up AGAIN! J-Mac makes no bones about not liking the Dancing Hooker, but J-Mac also prides herself on being fair. This is NOT the girl that got bullied by Carter and Fox. She's up at eight and still wants to fight!"
O'Dell: "Referee again gives the mandatory and decides to let it go. Halle lands a hard right to the head and there's the bell. Huge round puts Berry in control!"
ROUND NINE:
O'Dell: "Referee is in the Front Street corner asking Nicole if she's sure she wants to come out for this one, Mac...and Scherzinger is not going to punk."
McCarthy: "There's a thin line between brave and crazy and she's probably crossing it...and I can respect that."
O'Dell: "Nicole demanding this continue. Jewel and Neve not happy about it. Britney up on the apron getting involved, but Nicole shaking her head, stomping her foot. She's coming out for the ninth..."
McCarthy: "I still don't like her, but you have to respect what she's doing..."
O'Dell: "There's the bell and here comes Berry. Two hard right hands! Nicole backed into the ropes, still clearly hurt...Berry hooking the body, looking at the ref, wanting him to stop it...and THAT'S IT! THE REFEREE..."
Tess: "Referee nothing! Check the replay. A towel was thrown in!"
O'Dell: "Either way, it's OVER. The winner by TKO9 is Halle Berry!"
McCarthy: "Let's roll that replay...that towel didn't come from the Front Street corner! The Weirdo threw it in from the front row! He can't DO that..."
Tess: "See, he CAN, because he just DID..."
O'Dell: "Class act going on in the ring right now. Halle over to check on Nicole, who's on her stool surrounded by Front Street corner people. Berry talking to Scherzinger. Nicole getting to her feet a little unsteadily and we're going to see a hug here."
McCarthy: "If you ask me, there's been all together too much of THAT going on tonight..."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring where Tess has our winner!"
Tess: "Halle, great fight tonight. Considered a bit of an upset in some circles..."
Halle(smiling): "Well, count ME as a member of one of those circles! That girl's ranked number one in the world! She's a tough out for anybody, let alone an old lady like me."
Tess: "You didn't look old in there tonight..."
Halle(smiling): "I didn't FEEL old. I'm still in good shape and I can still fight. Maybe not 10 or 15 times a year, but I can still pick my spots. I may not be as quick as I used to be, but I make up for that by being a lot smarter!"
Tess: "Mind sharing what you said to Nicole after the fight?"
Halle: "I just wanted to make sure she was all right. There's nothing personal between us. Someday, somebody's going to take my crown as Queen of The Exotics. I wouldn't mind if it were her. But, like I said, the Queen isn't ready to abdicate just YET." |
