UD10 Sims--hugely one-sided.

When Durance/Larter was announced for this card, organizers made an effort to put Sims and Bridges together, sensing renewed interest in the depth of the lightweight division and wanting to showcase as many of the class as possible. Angelica came in the “badass”. a tuff beach beauty who had made a career out of upsetting her betters--women almost exactly like Molly Sims in profile. Sims was a tarnished former great Blonde Hope who had never been able to take the next step despite some strong false starts ion her career to date. At fight’s end Pundits would be stunned at the beating Molly had been able to give to Angelica--a sustained, technically proficient masterpiece that instantly qualified for Beating of the Year ‘07 consideration, and quite probably stands as the worst drubbing Ms. Bridges has ever received in a boxing ring.

Like many classic beatings--the rhythm of the victory apparent early as Sims pitched a flawless shutout first behind a rigid jab and penetrating right crosses. Molly’s face was tense with concentration, her footwork basic, but crisply executed as she rotated clockwise to deliver from long range. Bridges was routinely pre-empted and punched off balance--clearly the curvy redhead was having some problems with the model’s lank early--but most in the audience assumed it would be a matter if Angie finding her range and breaking Molly down.

In the second, Molly staggered Angelica with the right cross, and mopped up with a series oif hooks off the front foot, hoisted up into bridges’ ribs. Ever the brawler, Angie tried to bang her way into the clear: Sims stepped out on her foe, pivoted right, and punched Angelica as clean one-two on the face over Bridges’ low left hand, it was a telling  moment: Molly easily and effectively denying Angelica, clamping down on the redhead and imposing will when Bridges wanted to slug.

Ever-resilient, Bridges came off her stool strong in the third and fourth, looking to barge up the middle and bully Molly. Sims stayed classy, walked her foe onto the jab/right hand combo and looked to Angie’s ribcage every time Bridges stooped forward behind her mitts. Angelica’s face was glowing from punishment at this point, and her confusion was evident to ringsiders.. Unable to negotiate distance or (surprisingly to some) jab with molly--Angelica’s resort-to-fury was backfiring, simply playing into Molly’s hands.

Over the second half--Sims showed firm-legged fitness--upping her punch count, popping her jab with even more zest and setting down to hurt Angelica almost at will. Angie’s legs continued to hold her up, but she was no longer coming forward with authority: busting up, dismayed, bewildered--the redhead became a target out on the end of long blonde punches, Molly stayed on her girl, getting stronger as the realization dawned for both women that it was going to be a special night for Sims--and a heartbreaking one for Bridges.

Trapped against the ropes and helpless, Angelica gave up her first knockdown in the 8th, collapsing against a patented barrage of raking, straight lefts and rights from Molly. Sims’ scowl of concentration was replaced by a sunny, fresh-faced grin as she strutted and winked into her corner. This was the Molly Sims who had stopped Taylor Cole back to back, doing the same number on another beach vixen who simply didn’t have the answers she needed to compete.

Battered, but unbowed, Angelica dug down and made Molly fight for every point down the stretch, refusing to give the blonde the satisfaction of the stoppage. Only the toughest women--physically and emotionally--can stand in for 10 rounds when they don’t have their best stuff, and simply will themselves to finish. Stifling tears, proud Angelica knew she had been routed 10 rounds to love even before the announcement: her face a battered mask of disappointment, discomfort and disbelief.

So once again, Molly Sims comes through in a big show-me fight--a fight many in attendance assumed she didn’t have the heart to win. Whether or not she can build on the moment and take that elusive next step remains to be seen.
