“It ain’t the age, it’s the mileage” or so the saying goes. Young Ashley Scott came in with quickness, lithe power and superior conditioning against Virginia’s size, strength and experience, and in the end--it was age putting some mileage on youth I systematic, upset fashion.

Virginia knew she had to be the big girl, always coming forward, walking Scott down behind a heavy jab, looking to punch the body and clinch as often as possible to slow the pace. Scott loped and stepped supple outside, probing Virginie’s defenses with jabs and feints both--landing whip-limbed potshots to the older woman’s skull and sturdy midriff. Madsen proved the more able strategist, absorbing her fair share of looping right hands from Scott, but more than not managing Ashley’s willowy frame, putting a body on her and making those extra pounds count. By the forth round, this fight was being fought on Virginia’s terms, at Virginia’s pace, and those who know Ashley knew she was starting to break down tummy to tummy.

Madsen’s ham to the slighter woman’s ribcage made all the difference in the final four heats. Mouthbreathing and visibly worn, Scott couldn’t disengage from Madsen’s clinches, couldn’t get breathing room, and couldn’t work on the inside against the bigger blonde. Virginia out jabbed Ashley with sheer guile and timing, and thereby won the fight: Madsen’s command of distance enabled her to control every other element of this contest. By the final two rounds, Scott was reeling from hard, bashing haymakers to her head and shoulders: Madsen came forward hungry as an ingénue in her first get-noticed fight and would not be denied. It wasn’t pretty or stylish, but it was bludgeoning effective as Ashley finished up on her face, utterly used up and badly handled by her elder in this one.
