Sarah: This is perhaps the most uneven matchup of the event. Jacinda the lowly ranked AWUBA Superfeather, brings some form into this with a solid TKO1 of Kimberley Joseph and prior to that a grinding KO7 of Nicole De Silva. Some would say she’s passed it at 39. Natalie on the other hand, would have been challenging Rachael Finch for the AWUBA Super Feather title, coming off a UD10 over Krystal Forscutt who was the surprise packet at the BBU card. Natalie, any comments?
Natalie: I won my very first title against Jacinda 6 years ago to the day. So I am looking forward to this. I have height and reach advantage so I will be using that tonight.
Sarah: And Jacinda, you’re in form but some would say out of your depth here tonight.
Jacinda: Whilst ever I am still knocking people out, I am still a chance. She is an accomplished fighter but she can be beaten.
Round 1
Lightning quick start, both girls charging to the middle, into quick exchanges, Gruzzy soaking up shots to her protected torso, then leaning away and firing quick jabs at Jacinda’s face. It’s a minute of toe to toe combat mid-ring, both girls faring well. Jacinda taking a rest, backs away, filling her lungs, and takes a couple of quick jabs to the chin. She protects he face, giving ground, and that works well for Gruzzy’s reach as she just puts a couple of jabs out there and has some space to work in. Jacinda trying to bend the knee and coming in low but Gruzzy backs off, keeping the distance and bangs that jab at the opens. Gruzzy scoring well but not troubling the older girl and there’s the bell.
Kristy: You can see there, Nat tried to get to Jacinda quickly and take the reach advantage but Jacinda closed in as well. Both girls then getting into a close exchange that I don’t think neither really wanted. But that is how Jacinda is going to win the fight.
Kylie: Yeah not sure about the nickname Gruzzy, but I guess it’s easier to say than Gruzlewski. You’re absolutely right Hinzy. Jacinda probably didn’t want to be in close right from the outset but that’s the way to beat Nat.
Round 2
Gruzzy controlling from bell to bell. Keeping the distance, banging Barrett’s head back a few times and she’s backing off, always just out of reach of Gruzzy who just slides half a step and bangs another jab in there. Gruzzy on top, closing the gap slightly more and placing the left and right cross at Barrett’s chin, then skips back out to a safe distance. Whenever Barrett tries to come forward, she’s taking leather, has to be quicker or more evasive. It’s more of the same from Gruzzy. Throughout the final minute, Gruzzy holds back a bit, seeing if Barrett will come forward but she is happy to sit back and wait.
Kristy: Interesting round there from Barrett. She’s clearly being out boxed. I think she should take it to Nat again like she did in the first. It can’t hurt.
Kylie: Definitely. She has no answer from the outside as she just doesn’t have the reach. I’d be darting in there from the start and brawling her back against the ropes.
Round 3
More of the same from Gruzzy. Checks Barrett earlier to the chin with a whippy little uppercut. Barrett now opening the gap to more than a metre. Gruzzy advancing, placing that extended jab over and over again, right on the same spot. Barrett blinking, she’s coming apart, Gruzzy lurches forward, stiff jab to the forehead, followed by a MASSIVE RIGHT HOOK to the left cheek and DOWN GOES BARRETT! The older girl spun off her feet and flat on her face. Pushing herself up slowly and getting to her knees. Bleeding from cut eye. She’s up at 7, it’s only the smallest of cuts. She’s pale, long faced, swiping the blood away as the ref calls them in and she is out of there. Barrett in full retreat, quite quick for an old girl. Gruzzy spends the best part of two minutes chasing her, putting the occasional jab through her helmet like guard and there’s the bell.
Kylie: Well that was precisely the exact opposite of what we said she should have done. Gruzzy….Nat….is just too good from the outside.
Kristy: After that knock down she looked sick but surprisingly, she looks ok now. She had two minutes rest there.
Kylie: Nat will finish her this round or the next, I’ll put one of my house on it.
Round 4
Barrett meets her mid-ring, Gruzzy shocked, takes a hard shot to the stomach and she’s winded! Barrett digging punches into her stomach, Gruzzy buckled at the knees, cops two PENDULUM LIKE UPPERCUTS to the mouth and DOWN GOES GRUZLEWSKI! Barrett stunned, mid-ring as Gruzzy falls to all fours at her feet. Reaches out to grab Barrett’s knee but she steps back and Gruzzy is struggling to get up. She’s up now, nursing a split lip. Barrett waiting as the ref calls them in and HERE COMES JACINDA BARRETT! The older girl charges in smacking Gruzzy in the face, Gruzzy backpedalling, hits the corner and falls forward into clubbing lefts and rights to the rib cage, she covers up, the shots now digging in behind her elbows, OH ANOTHER RIGHT UPPERCUT to the chin, barely stays standing, Barrett thumping her in the belly as Gruzzy falls against her and hangs in, two more hard shots before the ref forces them apart. Gruzzy spinning out of the corner, sliding along the ropes on shaky legs. Barrett tracking her but Gruzzy is keeping her at bay, just holding at the left arm and pushing at Barrett’s face as she tries to get underneath and worked the battered belly but there is the bell and a huge round for Barrett!
Kylie: There you go Hinzy. That is exactly what I was saying.
Kristy: The round before you said that, last round you said it was all over.
Kylie: Yes but I did say she should dart in and go for the body. And she did exactly that and got the knockdown. Those uppercuts were enormous.
Kristy: So are you calling it for Jacinda now?
Round 5
BELL TO BELL DEMOLITON JACINDA BARRETT! Races in at the bell and catches Gruzzy just out of her corner, oh the body work, just a constant tirade of punches to the stomach, Gruzzy all compact, protecting everything, but taking hard shots. Each time she covers something, Barrett pummels something else. Gruzzy trapped in her corner now, Barrett unleashing the pain, LEFT HOOK smacks into her temple sending her sideways and returning for a SHORT SHARP RIGHT UPPERCUT, Gruzzy sitting on the ropes, helmet like guard, no openings for Barrett as she steps back and waits for Gruzzy to come off the ropes, she teeters forward and Barrett digs those hooks in behind the elbows again, Gruzzy coming apart at the seams, guard drops and Barrett lets fly with the RIGHT HOOK to the temple sending her head the other way, banging right hands into her ribs and there’s the LEFT UPPERCUT, Gruzzy smacked back into the corner, guard dropping by her side as Barrett smacks a left and right cross into her chin right on the bell and Gruzzy throws both arms over the top rope to hold herself upright.
Kristy: Vintage Jacinda Barrett that round. Nat nearly fell done after the bell there. Look at all that blood just leaking from the lip. Cause for concern in her corner and Barrett is just beaming in the other.
Kylie: Nat is in a world of trouble now. How quickly this fight has turned. What an amazing round from Jacinda. Her punches are just getting harder as the fight goes on. Looking a little tired though after that round, she did a lot of work there.

Round 6
Gruzzy struggling off the stool, slow to her feet, won’t come out of her corner. Barrett carefully closing the gap, testing to see if Gruzzy is game enough to take her on. Nothing. Gruzzy backing away, making Barrett chase her down, poking the jab out and keeping the distance. Barrett able to get underneath and land a few body shots. Mid-way through and the retreating and jabbing is working in Gruzzy’s favour as the reach starts to come back into play. She’s touching that cut now and then and that is cause for concern from Barrett who is now on the back foot. Now Gruzzy can advance and keep the distance she likes, far more effective on the front foot, touching Barrett up with that jab. That’s the bell.
Kylie: I really don’t know what Jacinda was thinking there. Unless she really was tired, I have no idea why she didn’t just attack that round.
Kristy: She has played Nat right back into the fight, simple as that.
Round 7
Gruzzy catching another break as Barrett still doesn’t advance and Gruzzy just keeps her at bay with that jab again. Almost holding her out there, pushing the jab at her face, then throwing the one two. Gets a bit scrappy with her footwork and takes a solid straight jab right on the nose, blinking and shaking her head and hightailing backwards and Jacinta comes on now. She has Gruzzy where she wants her now, working low at the body, just pelting her abs with digging jabs, wide hooks, banging her head up with the uppercut and Gruzzy is in full retreat, hitting the ropes, sliding along, reaching the corner, spinning in the opposite direction. Late in the round though, Barrett is tiring and the two girls circle a little more than arm’s length from one another to the bell.
Kylie: Jacinda’s corner has got to get the message to her that she CAN end this fight if she takes Gruzzy….oh I hate that nickname….if she takes Nat on. Just get in there and belt her.
Kristy: Your right Kylz, we have seen it time and time again, if she darts in and gets to work, Natalie can’t take the harder punches and she is always on her bike.
Kylie: It’s so close, that if Nat keeps fighting from outside she will score points. So Jacinda must attack. I’ve got it 63-61.
Round 8
Barrett again on the defensive. Gruzzy taking the opportunity to score. Half step, pokey jab, back away, half step, one two, back away. Barrett, guard high, ducking weaving, but copping 1 from every 3. Here it is again! Mid-way through, a cheeky little uppercut on the half step in catches Gruzzy on the chin and she’s dazed once more, backing away, almost tripping as she escapes. Barrett quick to pounce, one whole minute of dominance from Barrett, Gruzzy’s head on a bobble as she just fires in those wild body shots and collects her with rising uppercuts. The final minute resembling that of the 7th with both girls circling again. Not a lot of punching to the bell.
Kylie: That round was identical to the 7th. This is just silly from the BronzedOz corner.
Kristy: They must be trying to reserve some power. We have seen big punches from Barrett but not since round 5. She could be tiring.
Kylie: Well then why doesn’t Nat end the fight.
Kristy: She can’t get in close to finish it because she will be playing to Jacinda’s strengths. 71 a piece Kylz
Round 9
BARRETT CHARGES IN! Gruzzy worked straight back to her corner, Barrett just brawling her, pushing her until she smacks against the ropes. Footwork brilliant, Barrett twisting into massive hooks to the torso, Gruzzy’s guard collapses and Barrett goes up top firing a CRUNCHING RIGHT HOOK at the jaw followed by a BLISTERING LEFT UPPERCUT which lifts Gruzzy off her foundations, settling on wobbly legs, she reaches out her left arm and pushes off Barrett’s right shoulder spinning out of the corner and stumbling to the neutral corner. Barrett hunting her down, but walks into left jab as Gruzzy steps away, straight back to that defensive position. Barrett trying to get underneath it but she takes to fluffy uppercuts, Gruzzy keeping her at bay. Another poking left arm just to keep her away. Barrett clearly frustrated, darts in and under for a combination to the body but cops and overhand right to the face and she’s hurt! Barrett backs away but not quick enough and takes a WIDE RIGHT HOOK to the temple and she’s blasted back mid-ring, stumbling back into her own corner. Gruzzy after her, Barrett spins out of the corner, Gruzzy launching into another right hook but misses and there’s the bell! Kylie: I can’t believe we waited since the 5th to see her attack. The left attack was huge but just not big enough to put Nat down. Nat really brave to fight through that and actually took control of the round after that.
Kristy: I cannot believe she stayed on her feet. Barrett so unlucky not to take the fight in that round. This last round is going to be a cracker! 81-79 to Barrett I would say.
Round 10
Gruzzy waits in the corner, Barrett charges in, Gruzzy stepping left late, jamming the jab straight at the older girl, it crashes against cheek, Barrett rethinking her approach is now back on the end of the extended left arm of Gruzzy. Half step, OH SWIPING RIGHT HOOK catches Barrett on the jaw and totally by surprise. Haven’t seen her throw that from the outside all night! Barrett stumbling to the ropes, catches herself spins in time to take two hard jabs to the torso, she’s all covered up on the ropes, little uppercuts hit leather, hooks take glove. Gruzzy working hard but just can’t find the openings. Barrett must throw punches to win this. Gruzzy clubbing away but isn’t scoring. She steps away, fires a right hook but Barrett leans back and wizzes past her nose, returning a straight jab that misses Gruzzy’s left ear. Both girls swinging all the way to the bell!
Kristy: Well Nat has definitely taken that round Kylz so if we have got our scoring right, this is a dead set draw!
Kylie: Couldn’t have picked it better myself Hinzy. Both girls waiting anxiously mid-ring….Majority Decision NATALIE GRUZLEWSKI!
Kristy: Oh the disappointment on Barrett’s. Totally written off pre fight and has taken her much younger and more experienced opponent to 10. Let’s go up to Sarah.
Sarah: Jacinda, come here, you look upset.
Jacinda: Devastated. When you know you could have won a fight by doing things differently. It’s very frustrating. That’s all I’ve got to say.
Sarah: Ok, well Natalie, you must feel like the luckiest girl in the world right now.
Natalie: Not really Sarah. I mean that was a great effort from Jacinda but I felt pretty comfortable even after that horrible 5th round. She just wouldn’t attack and I knew she was tired. I knew I could last 10 rounds as long as I stayed on my feet and out of her way. Although she caught me a few times, there wasn’t a lot of power there and so, here I am, one win away from a title shot.
Sarah: That’s a big call. They are queuing up in front of you, Krystal, Poppy, Jen.
Natalie: That’s what I am saying Sarah, if I beat one of those 3, I would have to get a title shot.
Sarah: Yeah, ok, well good job tonight.
