Matsumoto is the clear favourite for this bout, and the 25 year old American actress has a massive first fight against the undefeated Japanese girl who will surely overwhelm her opponent here tonight.

Emmy looks good as she steps into the ring, wearing a black bikini for her debut, but Sayuki’s super confident, clad in electric blue bra and panties, looking what she is – a contender!

Round 1

It’s a rapid start from Matsumoto, who comes off her stool with sheer menace, oozing power, and she’s punching the rookie in the first minute with all her force, going for the American’s body from the outset, and she has her backed up to her own corner as she slams hooks into that ribcage, hurting the girl. Emmy covers, and gets some punches of her own off, keeping Sayuki busy for a while in the middle of the round, but she can’t keep this going for long once the Japanese girl tucks into her belly with a couple of rasping digs, and she fades a little towards the end of the round, with Matsumoto then giving her a big left hook to the mouth, and another, and that’s got Emmy hurt just before the bell. Sayuki’s round.

Round 2

There’s more punishment for Emmy to take from Sayuki here as the older girl comes out strong -not as strong as in the first but she still gets Emmy on the defensive straight away, easily finding her range in the younger girl’s face, which is already marking up. Rossum grows in confidence when she finds that maybe the Japanese girl isn’t quite timing those shots, and she does her best to fight back, lands a combination to Sayuki’s cheeks, but Sayuki is still in control, beats her backwards, and again Emmy fades as the round moves to the closing stages, and now Sayuki gets Emmy to the body with a thudding right hook, sets herself, then gives the girl a solid thumping up against the ropes – left to the cheek, right around the side to her ear, snappy little uppercut to the jaw, another hook to the mouth and Matsumoto puts Rossum down in the closing seconds. She gets up - just, but she's shaken, and lucky that the bell saves her from any more - yet.

Round 3

It’s a strange start to the round as Matsumoto seems to have slowed down, and she’s allowing Rossum finally to get into this fight, the debutante slipping inside the older girl’s gloves and landing a few crisp little shots, maybe being on top for the first minute of this round. But minutes are not rounds, and Sayuki comes back at her – maybe she was just seeing what the girl had – and she’s clubbing her around the ring now, the poor girl finding it hard to hide, as Sayuki consistently clubs punches into her now bruised face, making the girl stagger as her knees struggle to hold her upright, effectively grabbing the round out of Rossum's hands.

Round 4

Out of desperation probably, Emmy stands her ground as the girls resume, and they trade shots, neither girl looking for defence, and neither looking to hold. This is good action, and a much more competitive round, with Emmy even getting Sayuki to step backwards half a stride after connecting with a good combination, only to get caught as Matsumoto moves back into her, and she’s hurt again when the Japanese girl switches to her body. Now Sayuki starts getting into her stride again, and backwards goes Rossum, yelping as Sayuki just pours leather on Emmy and takes all the breath from her. Right through the final minute with Sayuki keeps up the pressure and Rossum looks lost here, she has nothing in her locker that the Japanese girl is concerned about.

Round 5

The bell rings again, but Rossum is slower moving now, and she’s certainly slow out of her corner, not connecting with any of the punches she throws, Matsumoto avoiding her with ease, while Sayuki keeps peppering her – face and body, just where she likes. Rossum’s unable to answer the big punches when Sayuki starts looking to finish this off, and now she starts to fade away again and when Sayuki hits her with a right uppercut, she goes down, and stays down.

Sayuki Matsumoto knocked Emmy Rossum out in round 5.

That was pretty powerful stuff tonight from Matsumoto - it didn't take her a lot of effort to knock down Emmy, but the way she punches she’s surely going to get a title shot soon. As for Emmy – the fight was beyond her, and it would be good to see her up against a less powerful girl next time.
