Smoky small venue fight--Los Angeles (The Dresden)

Been a great year for the hardworking Maria Bello-=-finally getting the fights and attention she’s deserved for some time--small but loyal fan base that follows her from venue to venue along the West Coast, Langton long regarded as a consummate boxer’s boxer, basically dropping off the radar screen, but for hard core fans Bello/Langton is a treat. No stranger to smoky dives and small, enthusiastic crowds, Langton was right at home at The Dresden and she showed Maria Bello no respect over 10 hardworking, very skillful heats,

Brooke showed her class right from the start, posting a glitzy shutout first that featured dynamic bring generalship, pounding jabs, flurries of combinations body and head--just dressing Maria up for the night to come. In the second, Langton showed she could sting as well--putting Maria down with a stunning counter right uppercut in the second minute, flooring her again in the third minute with a tidy straight right hand/left uppercut combo. Bello got up strong from both drops, but the under-rated brunette had gotten her respect and then come.

Bello proved stubborn and determined, and the next three round s would be a grinding near-stalemate as blonde bogged mobile down at the ropes and both girls traded vicious digging licks in close. Langton showed her defensive class in these heats, covering up, letting Bello burst to the arms and guard, countering selectively off the block--Brooke couldn’t win points fighting this way, but she succeeded in coaxing Maria to expend a ton of energy with non-stop attack inside. As Bello’s pace slowed, brunette giot back to boxing and from the sixth round on it was all Brooke Langton.

Largely pro-Bello crowd was nervous, quiet--occasionally shouting encouragement to Maria, but Brooke’s concentration never wavered as she operated on her opponent with icy calm execution. Landed punches seemed shockingly loud in the cramped confides, and the energy Maria had received from the crowd early on was sucked back again as Bello-fans reacted to Langton scoring blows. Straight right hands buckled Maria’s legs in the sixth. That short right hand/left uppercut combo dropped blonde again in the 7^th. Thumping body work in the 8^th left Maria slumped and shabby on the ropes. And 9^th and 10^th were workmanlike masterpieces as Brooke circled, popped face her jab, dropped areow right hands chest, stomach and chin from outside--moving in and out as required and even bodying up to walk the tired blonde around. Bello’s heart and courage never in doubt as she kept coming, kept working her hook to Brooke’s flank, but the decision was a foregone conclusion. Brooke Langton proved a spoiler as she has her whole career long, sending Maria home with lumps, bruises, and a valuable education on the night.
