BBU March Title PPV Lightweight Undercard Bout

Phoebe Tonkin faces off against Italian Lightweight champion Laura Pausini in her second BBU Bout. At 37, and 5’ 6 ½ (1.69 m), Laura looks to be at a considerable physical disadvantage to the 5’ 10 (1.78 m) younger (22) Phoebe. However the Latin Union fighter points out: “Joss Stone was young and taller, but I cut her down to size. I have years more fighting experience than Phoebe and I shall use that to gain another upset victory.” For her part, Phoebe Tonkin responds: “I’m a MUCH better fighter than Joss was and Pausini won’t be able to stand up against my punching. She’s going to be glad this fight didn’t involve her title belt.”

R1: Opening bell and Laura starts to moving around Phoebe, clearly hoping to confuse the younger fighter. Phoebe keeps behind her guard, licking out with the jab and waiting for the veteran to make a move to test her inside. Sure enough, at the start of the second minute, Laura makes a feint to the right, drawing Phoebe in that direction and the Italian leans forward to loop in a left over Tonkin’s lowered guard. At the last moment, however, the Australian girl shifts to take shot on her shoulder, then swings out to BLAST Laura in the chin. Shot lifts the smaller woman up on her toes and LAURA CRASHES ONTO HER BACK. Phoebe steps back with a smile of satisfaction on her face as Laura lays there, awake, but momentarily unable to get her stunned body to obey. However the Italian champion shows her heart by rolling over to her side and the slowly rising to beat the count as it reaches 9. Laura swaying on her feet and referee is concerned, he appears to considering ending the fight. This brings Laura to sudden life crying: “I can go on! Really I can! Please, I beg of you--let it go on!” The referee nods and allows the fight to continue. Phoebe moves back in with wide, banging shots, but Laura able to dodge or blunt these. Phoebe has to chase the older woman and never quite catches up. Phoebe looks displeased at this, but it’s simply good veteran strategy for the situation Laura faced.

R2: Phoebe comes charging in on Laura clearly determined to end this fight quickly. The big youngster starts throwing haymakers that the veteran is able to duck and uses her jab to put leather on the Aussie’s face. Phoebe hit in the mouth, nose, eyes, comes to a halt looking unpleasantly surprised at this resistance. Then Laura swings in a lightning right cross/left hook to Phoebe’s jaw. Australian stumbles back putting her gloves up to protect her suddenly lumped up face and the Italian has a fine time feasting on Tonkin tummy and waistline. The rookie seems confused as to what to do about this and finds herself pummeled back towards the ropes. As her backside hit’s the strands, Phoebe takes alarm and responds with jabs of her own to keep the smaller woman back. Laura falls back to avoid a heavy punch landed on her and takes the round,

R3: Tonkin gets a stern talking-to from her corner during break. She comes out cautiously this time, which is fine with Laura who starts dancing around the bigger woman trying to goad her into rash actions with an annoying jab. However Phoebe remains focused and patient. Laura tries ducking down and going after Tonkin tummy again. It appears this is what the Australian was waiting for, she takes the body blows and hammers down on the incoming Laura’s head. Laura hit hard on the temple and her knees buckle: LAURA SINKS TO HER KNEES. Phoebe coldly dips down herself puts a terrific right uppercut in under the Italian’s descending chin. Laura now shoots backwards, legs spreading and arms flying above her head as she lands--OUT COLD! Ref immediately ends the fight and Phoebe Tonkin wins the fighting with a thunderclap KO3.

After: Laura Pausini revived and assisted to her stool. She recovers sufficiently to accept a handshake from the de-gloved Phoebe Tonkin. Phoebe later explains: “I am glad she wasn’t seriously hurt. I was afraid I’d really hurt her with that last shot. They never should have let her fight someone as big and strong as me. Hopefully, next time I will face someone better able to stand up to my punching. Really, I’m only here to win, not hurt girls.” No immediate comment from the Latin Union camp
