BBU INTERNATIONAL BOUT

BEFORE. Malika Menard the one under the spotlight here: the phenomenal French fighter has already managed to win eleven fights in a row, establishing an absolute record for the BBU, but she doesn't want to stop: "I need to win a couple more fights to break Sabrina Washington's record, and I know that Helena is not an easy opponent. She's stubborn and resilient, and quick when she manages to, but he had a rough fight against Casta, and so I know she's beatable. I'll get to her body early in the fight -this way I'll break her pride down!" Mattsson the underdog here, but she shows some confidence: "Malika had a great start, but I saw some flaws in her technique in her recent fights. Especially against Pippa, she's been hit too many times -and I'm stronger than Ms Middleton!" Menard in her stunning black bikini, Helena in her equally astonishing yellow one.
R1. Girls out in a hurry, dancing on their toes, throwing jabs at each other with force -and even precision! Menard gets at Helen's gloves early, but Mattsson blocks nicely and answers with a right hook to the body. Menard not letting the shorter girl dictate the pace here, she insists with the jab and finally finds some clear shots at Helena's body. Mattsson steps back, guard high, with Malika chasing her for a while, pushing the Swede towards the ropes where she unleashes her right cross… but Helena ducks, stepping on the left and here comes the left hook! Malika Menard hit hard, she is now the one that steps back, with Mattsson in pursuit. Menard using her right to keep the blonde away from her, but it's simply not working: French girl gets her ratio of punches here as she stands there for a few seconds, getting punishment from Helena until the bell stops the round. Nice first round for Mattsson, she put some pressure on Malika, but the French girl seems to be the one with the hardest punches.
R2. Menard back with the jab, but Helena stays quick here and Malika finds air rather than flesh on several occasions. On the contrary, Helena manages to get her counterattacks set up nicely, pounding at Malika's left side on several occasions, and then having a clean uppercut to her chest. Menard still trying to hit big at the end of the round, but it's clear this strategy is not working at the moment -her corner has to do some work here!
R3. Menard now moving a little better, trying to get Helena close enough to get her thunderous right started, but Mattsson does not cooperate. Finally, Mattsson moves in, Malika goes for a right hook and Mattsson ducks gain, answering with a right cross to Malika's face! Big French girl stunned -she moves towards the ropes to escape Helena's follow-up, but she gets trapped there. Helena now pouring with her right -Malika with her mitts on her head and her elbows tight on her chest, she waits for her chance to hit Helena, but she misses! Mattsson's left punishes Malika again with a clear shot on the face -French girl now frozen, unsure of her actions as Helena adds more punishment. Crowd on its feet, cheering Helena -Swedish girls is certainly getting the sympathies of the British crowd here, especially because of her French opponent- but Malika finally manages to clinch and stop the onslaught. Cheap shot from the French girl as the two are separating makes the crowd murmur in disapproval, but Mattsson gets her revenge soon with a swinging right that crashes onto Malika's head; Menard visibly dazed, but she refuses to go down here. End of the round -Mattsson dancing around Menard, arms down, taunting her opponent; Malika with her mitts high, unable to score the big punch here. As the bell ring again, Malika gets back to her corner frustrated, waiting for her trainer to give her a list of adjustments to take care of.
R4. Menard calm, gets out of her corner and waits for Helena's movements; she eventually uses her right to test Mattsson's position, but Helena still doesn't give her a clean shot. Finally, Malika with the big right cross again, and Mattsson ducking again then pouring a precise combo to Malika's stunned face! LEFT/RIGHT AND MALIKA BACKPEDALS! Mattsson quickly follows her, hitting her again with the right, keeping pressure on her body with a nice combo, until the poor Malika finds herself at the ropes. Oh oh, big girl in big trouble now -Helena pouring on her face, Malika unable to defend herself, she sinks with her butt on the middle rope, sitting there in disbelief and crying bitter tears as the Swede keeps her pace. Right/left/right to the face -Malika desperately tries to hit Helena with her right fist but she gets hit by a glorious uppercut to the chin instead AND MENARD IS DOWN!!!!! Malika on her back, breathing heavily, even more tears on her face now; Helena jumping around, looking right into Malika's face, trying eye contact; ref shoving Helena away, then turning to Malika AND HE SIGNALS IT'S OVER!!! No counting necessary -the formidable run of Malika Menard ends here at the hands of a very determined Helena Mattsson!
AFTER. Menard down on her back for several minutes, unable to face the pressure coming from her first defeat. Eventually, ‘La Grande Malika' gets back on her feet, but she has to be helped by her staff. Danielle Harris tries to calm her, but it's clear that Malika is going to remember this defeat (or disaster) for a long time. On the opposite side of the ring, celebrations are going on for Helena's huge victory -simply put, she has been superb tonight. Her speed put a lot of pressure on Malika; her quick movements really broke the big French girl's psyche; and strong, well-placed punches did the rest. "I won big tonight! Menard was so pompous, so confident of her victory, that I had an easy time breaking her apart! I respect her -she had a great run and she put down very strong opponents- but tonight she found the best opponent she's ever had. I won -period. She's going to remember it! Everyone will!" As expected, Malika Menard was unavailable for the post-fight conference -but after a few days, she would blame Foxfire Atlantic and its attention to FCBA's wonder Mary Elizabeth Winstead for her defeat. Great run for her, she couldn't match Sabrina Washington's record but her eleven fights streak represents a record for a rookie. We'll see if and how she can bounce back. |
