The bantamweight title bout features the first defence of the BBU crown by Team Canada's Erica Cerra who knocked out Jessica Schwarz in an extremely vicious clash back in March. The challenger for the title is the experienced and undefeated 37-year old Japanese Kei Mizutani who dispatched Emma Glover during the same March PPV to earn herself this opportunity.
Cerra has FCBA background and many experts have predicted her reign to last for a number of months. The equally FCBA-experienced Billie Piper awaits as the next challenger to the title already, having defeated Nicola Roberts on points earlier tonight.
Erica Cerra wearing a white & red schemed bikini and white gloves. Kei Mizutani wearing a dark blue bikini and black gloves.
Round 1: Miztuani has a repuation of a vicious grinder, happy to inflict a lot of damage to her opponents, but Cerra got an equally ruthless experience against Schwarz, so it's little surprise that both women immediately engage in a wild punchest, worthy of any flyweight bar brawl!! Kei's age is not her strong suit especially against someone of Cerra's background and the champ receives an early lacing to the head, Kei's jumped on her with no sympathy whatsoever and breaks through with a flurry of jabs, Erica bravely refuses to step away, but gets rocked with a couple of shots and covers up. Mizutani leans on her in close distance, whacks a series of blows to the ribcage, but the Canadian has them all covered, no way through there for the Japanese. Quick left hook from Cerra catches her in the temple and briefly tames the attack. Cerra single-strikes herself out of trouble, lacing Kei in the jugs and firing a nifty cross-hook to the nose. The older girl gets nailed and is the first one to step back, seeking some respite. Some let-off for Erica who looked to be getting out-punched there for a moment. She begins to circle around her Japanese foe as Kei fakes some shots but remains on the back foot. The early aggression has eventually evaporated and both women are happy to hold back until the bell.
Round 2: Kei's first to strike, but her hooking combo crashes off the guard and Erica delivers the punishment instead, landing some single jabs from the left to the breasts, throwing a solid hook from the right that lands clean on the ribcage. Mizutani leaps up, misses a stiff jab and gets nailed again, this time a perfect shot from the top catches her on the cheek. Erica picks her off with jabs to the breasts, moments later an uppercut grazes off Kei's chin and the Japanese mis-times her jabbing response, only catching the Canadian in the forearms, missing most of her series to the midsection from the opposite side. Cerra's mighty quick on her feet, throws a series of shots herself, pummelling away at her rival's ribcage and jumping back as Kei's wild hook harmlessly cuts through the air. Erica repeatedly bunny hops around the older woman, Mizutani has a vicious reputation, but is made look slow and sluggish by the lively Canadian. Quick shots from mid-range add further misery to her gameplan and the champion just sticks to her gameplan. At the bell there are first signs of frustration on Kei's face, she cannot crack her younger foe so far, having missed a good chance in the opening minute of this fight.
Round 3: Erica walks around Mizutani, continues to work on her from mid-range, refusing to step in more aggressively. Kei latches forward, but misses a couple of hooks to the face, Cerra dodges those shots and fires a big response, catching the older woman clean on the breasts. Mizutani winces, bends forward, but her gloves are crushed aside by Erica's powerful uppercut. More damage on the jugs!! Kei looks for a clinch, drives with her head underneath Erica's arm, but the Canadian whacks her in the exposed ribcage. Ref steps in, Cerra has none of it, continues to blast quick jabs to the midsection as the Japanese challenger winces in pain. She tries to wrap her right arm around her neck but can't do it. Ref finally shoves the raging champ away and Erica's very upset, she steps up a gear for remainder of the round, nails the hapless rival in the midsection and face, Kei can only back against the ropes and cover up. She survies this late onslaught but the champion's warming up for a really spectacular finish here and Mizutani needs to find some answers quickly.
Round 4: Kei looks to tame the champion's charge by stepping up herself, but Erica's rolled into a higher gear, blocks off a chaotic jabbing sequence to the head and counters to the midsection, more clean shots on the ribcage inflict further damage as Kei is visibly too slow to prevent Cerra from methodically tearing her apart. Desperate lunge forward from Miutani, sky hook misses and Erica ducks to the side in time, wobbles the challenger some cross jabs to the head, Kei covers up but is out of position, loses her footwork and is rooted a spot briefly; Cerra piles in with double hooking combo!!! Left shot spilts the gloves and the right catches the Asian on the mouth. Loud moan from Kei who sinks on the ropes; easy prey for the champion now, Erica leaps up, works on the midsection, jabs her way through to the jugs again, crisp hooks to the face and Mizutani is turned into a training sack in no time. Cerra fires away from both flanks, snaps the Japanese girl's head back & forth, but can't send her down on the canvas before the bell. She sports a broad smile while walking back to her stool though well aware of the increasing advantage over the hapless-looking opponent.
Round 5: Mizutani's very slow off her stool, just asking for trouble one might say and Erica wastes little time in closing the distance. She whips a couple of hooks, Kei just couldn't raise her gloves quick enough to cover them off and moans again as her head snaps back. Cerra with a series to the ribs, has the Japanese retreating towards the ropes just seconds into the round. No mercy whatsoever from the champ, she sets up a lethal right hook, cross-hooking Mizutani's guard from the left and whacks her clean on the temple. DOWN GOES MIZUTANI crashing hard on her side as Cerra jumps away to her corner, allowing ref to start the count. Kei shakes her head, up on all fours at five and back upright at eight. Determined look on her face as she survives the first real scare, but will the physical strenght match her mental abilities? Erica thinks it won't and charges at her rival straight after the command. Kei refuses to back away and seek some respite in clinching and biding more time. Brave showing from the Asian warrior but she misses a left hook on the onrushing champ who in turn whacks her in the ribs from the left and follow-up from the right, straight on the temple again!!! Kei was launching a left hook herself but the knees gives way after that hook from Cerra and DOWN GOES MIZUTANI again, this time crashing onto all fours in the middle of the ring!!! More joy for the Canadian as Kei is visibly stunned, seemingly unaware of her whereabouts. She scrambles herself back upright at seven, but the eyes are misty and the ref doesn't like it. "C'mon, she's good to go!" Erica yells at her man in charge, clearly having a lot of fun out there. Mizutani shoves the guy away and leaps up, trying to punish the bragging champ, wobbly legs from the Asian, she misses a left hook to the head and Erica barely had to move for that one... she responds with a crisp right hook on the temple... it's like clubbing baby seals... DOWN GOES MIZUTANI flat on her back, arms spread to each side, eyes closed. She's not getting up this time and the ref calls for the stretcher already... KO R5 and STILL the bantamweight champion... Erica Cerra!!!
Post-fight: Some confusion about that final knockout. Totally unneccesary from Erica who had the bout won already, but the ref just couldn't tame the tempers out there and is at fault that Kei Mizutani suffered a heavy knockout which could have easily been spared. However the crowd is on their feet, they got what they wanted, one girl walking around the ring with her belts proudly raised above her head and the other one being stretched off unconscious to the locker room.
This was an international bout with neither girl having a significant support of the audience who just wanted to see a good piece of female boxing and Erica Cerra surely made it happen. With her FCBA experience she truly seems like a top class fighter in BBU and looks set to break the longevity of a champion's reign in the organization's history if she continues to display such performances. Billie Piper has a real mountain to climb if she's about to take the belts away from the fearsome Canadian.
Final result: Erica Cerra def. Kei Mizutani KO5.
