What can we say, 35 year old French champion defends her title against 26 year old French challenger?

We can say that Lea beat Virginie last time they met! It was brutal back in January, and it’s likely to be the same in June.

Lea’s first into the ring, and she’s wearing a navy blue bikini tonight, looking good too – and here’s Virginie in a golden bikini, embroidered on the rear in red letters, BBU CHAMPION’ Lea is not smiling, and she is clearly ready to fight her fellow Frenchwoman.

Round 1

There’s no holding back in the opening seconds, with the girls exchanging punches straight away, with Virginie thudding some very good straight punches into Lea’s face, and the younger girl countering to her body. Virginie’s not standing still to trade, though, and she’s staying active, on her toes and dancing around the ring, making sure Lea can’t get inside her to rough her up. Lea isn’t moving as quickly as she should, and she gets picked off by the older girl time and again, ending the round red-faced and panting after taking many more punches than she landed.

Round 2

Virginie’s mobile again, and she’s snapping off some sharp punches into Lea’s face, but the blonde’s getting stuck into Virginie with a little more purposes, and she manages to push her into the ropes, the hit her to either flank, which is enough to have the champion clinching and hugging, looking to regain her breath. This is good, hardworking stuff from Lea, and she’s certainly landing the bulk of the punches this round, making it hard for Virginie, and stabbing the champion backwards and into the ropes, certainly taking the round back.

Round 3

Now both girls are going for it! There’s a tremendous exchange in the centre of the ring as the girls swap booming hooks in each other’s faces, and neither of them wants to take a step back, but Virginie has to, with Lea sending a left hook into her ribs, then a right to her mouth, and that has the champion spitting blood. Lea senses that she has Virginie rocking, and she closes in on her, thuds her to the body, but then she gets a faceful of Virginie’s gloves, as the champ fights back hard, sending Lea onto the back foot, and making her stagger and sway as she drives those sharp punches into her face, evening the round by the bell.

Round 4

Virginie starts the round the better of the pair, and she’s soon giving Lea a test with good jabs, and she’s beating the younger girl to the punch now, steps up the pace, and gets in nice and close, but then back comes the blonde, and she tags Virginie with a right hook, staggers her, tags her again, and that puts Virginie on her back, the champion looking unsure of herself, and she’s struggling to rise at 8. There’s not long on the clock, and Lea needs to be quick – in she steams, and she bangs Virginie’s head backwards, goes for a big hook again, but this time Virginie blocks her, grabs, clinches, and holds her way through to the bell.

Round 5

Lea’s swift off her stool, but she finds Virginie a harder target to hit this time, the champion covering up well, and defending tightly, making the challenger do all the work. Lea’s circling and throwing leather, but she’s landing nothing of consequence, and is becoming rather frustrated as Virginie keeps her away, and keeps her moving. Then, with Lea looking fairly short of ideas, Virginie comes back at her, and she raps her own punches into the blonde’s face, sending her to the ropes, where she can hit her more easily, Lea not reacting well to the champion’s punches, and she looks pretty sore as she concedes the round.

Round 6

Virginie is getting more and more on top in this fight, and she starts to make the challenger look tired now, batting her face from side to side from the outset, she then drives two left jabs right through the girl’s guard, shaking her to her toes with that one, and now it’s Lea who has to hold to survive. She rallies well, and punches her way off the ropes, ignoring a swelling which has risen under her right eye, but Virginie has spotted it, and she lands bang, bang with her left jabs, jolting Lea’s head back and getting that swelling to rise, the champion now taking control, and bossing her younger challenger.

Round 7

Lea’s cornermen have done a good job on her cheek, and she defends it well, with Virginie becoming a little left hand obsessed, and this lets Lea snap back at her, giving her some punishment to the body. Virginie is forced to defend, and she’s back on the ropes, with the blonde looking to punish her inside her guard, so she fights back as hard as she can, no longer defending, and now she does get through with her left hand, and it’s an uppercut which she lands, not a perfect connection, but enough to put Lea on her knees, the girl shaking her head, clearing it, and getting up at 7. The damage is done though, and although she tries to get back into the round, Virginie clinches her, and looks like she’s happy to grind this one out.

Round 8

The girls are tired, and Virginie’s doing very little other than spoil, with Lea almost desperate in her attempts to make the champion exchange punches. Virginie looks tired, and she’s not offering much here, just keeping Lea tied in and toothless, seeming to be content to concede a dull round. Lea does her best to liven things up, circles and jabs the champion, but she gets another good smack in the mouth for her troubles, and she too lets the time pass, grabbing a round back.

Round 9

Lea takes it to Virginie again as the round starts, and she’s not looking for the champ’s body any more, just going for a clean knockout, with the older girl really looking spent, and already looking at the clock, trying to clinch her way through another round. It’s not going to happen though, and a terrifically energetic Lea swings her right hand, and again, and she connects, splatting Virginie backwards, onto those ropes again. Lea should remember what happened last time, but her concentration’s waning, and she surges forwards, throws punches from either hand, then rues her decision as the champion hurts her with a solid straight right to the belly, opens her up for hitting, and punishes her with a good combination to the face, pretty much finishing that eye off, as the swelling threatens to close it. Now Virginie closes in, but Lea repels her, and she stuns the brunette with a left hook of her own, and it looks like the ropes are holding the champ up at the bell.

Round 10

This fight is pretty much even at this stage – who wants it more? Lea is the girl in the ascendancy again, sending Virginie backwards with a series of right hand punches, and when she connects with a left hook, the champion’s knees definitely shake. The blonde sees her discomfort, and in she comes once more, with Virginie breathing heavily, and she heaves a right hand into the champion’s ribcage -Virginie grunts, and responds! It’s the left uppercut again, and Lea’s back on the floor, not sure how she got there, but she hears the count, and beats it at 8, takes a good left jab to that busted up eye, then does everything to try to reverse the knockdown, and she hurts Virginie with her right hand to the face, gives it to her again to the body, and the champion folds over, but won’t go down, and there’s the bell!

This is close – it’s unanimous though – Virginie Ledoyen beat Lea Seydoux on points, and is still BBU flyweight champion.

Lea gave her all to try to wrest the title from her fellow Frenchwoman, but the last round knockdown was the difference between the two, snatching victory from defeat for Virginie.
