Before: Hayek a big favourite at most books, but Hewitt’s carved out hard won credibility in her break-through year--no one questioning the legitimacy of Jen’s title bid: she’s earned it. “I’m bringing a little Portman to this dance,” says Jen in preflight, “a little Mish, a little Packard--I’m a blend of the best at this weight and Salma’s going to be feeling very needy as this fight goes on. I’ll box her to set up my power, and Hayek’s going to be shocked when I hurt her, That’s going to turn everything around: Salma picking her butt off the canvas off the canvas.” Hayek happy to discuss the notion of Jennifer’s power. “PLEASE punch with me,” champ implores. “Jenny, punch with me and give the crowd something to cheer about--Yo0u going out in spectacular fashion. I know Jennifer Love Hewitt is not about to stand toe to toe with me, so I won’t go in about it, but truly--Hewitt as a power puncher is a joke.”
During R1: Shutout Hayek--champ putting on a power-boxing clinic. Hayek elbows in, hands up and loose, scooting footwork as she closes behind a banging job--Hewitt being steered, positioned, backed up and worked to the ropes. Salma scoring in clusters chopping a straight right hand high and shivering a straight arm hook off Jen’s liver and waistline--brunette doing a nice job of spinning out of danger, but she’s on her heels bell to bell.
R2: More smart, intense pressure from Hayek as she cuts off the ring with jabs, straight right hands, works her girl to the ropes and looks to score hard to the midsection. Midway through, crippling left hooks around the elbow have Hewitt pale with punishment--Jen reaching in under Champion’s arms and holding for breaks on shaky legs. Hayek tidying up n Jen in the final minute, really setting down and hacking right hands on top, left hands downstairs, twisting her hips into those ferocious hooks. Hewitt groannnnning as she bends forward, eyes clenched tight--she guts out the round, but she’s been taking for 6 straight minutes.
R3: Third shutout in a row Hayek--just systematically breaking her challenger down. Hayek’s jab stitching into Jen’s face and upper chest, rocking her back or to the sides. That banging straight right hand off the forehead drives Jen ropeside, knocks her off balance. Payoff punch is that withering hook, just chopping Hewitt’s trembling midriff and liver, relentlessly going there over and over again. Hewitt gritting her teeth, using her legs and pretty spin-sidesteps to escape pressure, still unable to do anything more than survive to do anything more than survive as Hayek rolls up the points.
R4: Jenny in full retreat--Hayek in reckless pursuit and Hewitt takes advantage. Early action--Jen stopping, walking a careless Latina into a gobsmacking right hand--Hayek caught flush, stopped in her tracks as curvy thighs give a shake--Jen’s over to offense! Lathering lefts and rights splatter up Hayek’s flanks, cashing in the hook on chin and getting her backing up. Salma extending her left as she backpedals--Jen lands a gambling right over top to drive champ ropeside. Hewitt launching a walk-in right over the top that misses, but collects Salma in the belly with free-swinging come-back hook--Hayek covering up and rolling her torso as Hewitt pours it on. Jen staying on her brisk with brisk shoeshines, stepping side to side to get angles as Hayek sits in the ropes, then settling down on hard hooks or right hands--Hewitt mixing up tempo well to score sharply to the face. Final moments, Jen finishes up strong on the Hayek rack, standing up in the stirrups to burp those puppies with jagged, rising lefts and rights up to and past the bell. Salma woozy, eyes filled with moist complaint as Hewitt romps to jug free of charge.
R5: Jenny’s got the initiative--looking sharp early. Hewitt dancing to a spot, planting, stepping in a straight right hand, fading back as she jabs, then getting another right hand as Salma moves in. Jen stepping out to walk right, hands up sexy at her chest as she keeps her left side pointed at her foe. Hayek shaking off the punishment by the second minute, starts to reassert herself, winning a series of spanking exchanges, forcing Hewitt to the perimeter and by the final minute--Jen’s running the clock.
R6,7: Salma ruthlessly puts down the uprising. Hayek cutting off the ring like a seasoned pro, patiently banging away to the waist o get Jen flat footed and punished, then tapping away with contact straight lefts and rights on the face and breasts--just touching Jen at close range, occupying her, then cashing in her body again with a thumping hook. Hewitt spending too much time in the ropes, too weary to get ff, laying in with Hayek for long stretches and letting the Latina work.
R8: Jen bobbing at the waist, trying to protect her midsection by staying low--Hayek crowding in off the right shoulder, stepping left to keep the angle and snatching at Jens hip and right side with bouncing hooks off shiny, taut meat. Salma stepping with and getting off crisp, sometimes clipping the hook into a left uppercut, grazing against Jen’s overhanging forward, occasionally helping herself to breast. Hewitt with some late hooks out of the bob rallies in the final minute, trading with Hayek in tight punching quid pro quo.
R9: Salma staying close, sable to get Jen bent forward and defensive, then stepping left to hook at the vulnerable right side. Hewitt doing a nice job evading head shots, protecting her interior, but the kidneys and ribs are getting jack hammered by Salma’s snatching persistence. Jen forced once again to open up late and does it well--she’s competitive when she lets her hands go, just too spotty about it.
R10: Hewitt with a second wind, gets back to some linear boxing that catches Salma by surprise, Jen able to move to spots, step in the lead tight hand, step out with that jab, then walk Hayek into a clean right cross, slapping the left to ear to pivot clockwise for an escape. Jen with some nice slick looks, spinning Hayek with an arm around the waist, shoe shining rights, but it’s too little too late. Hewitt takes a classy 10th, Hayek defends and retains via UD10.
After: Salma showing her pedigree, effectively controlling Jennifer wire to wire, but Hewitt exceeding expectations in some quarters. “Jen got beat by Salma’s consistency,” notes one pundit, “but you didn’t see her get hit with a lot of big shots, and the ones the ones that did land, she took well. A lot of those rounds Jen just played too defensively, although maybe you give Salma credit for causing that, but still--Hewitt going 10 with Hayek at this stage of her career is a good sign.” Salma loving it to Jennifer’s body all night long--Hewitt showing heart in gutting out the punishment, but Hayek solving a cute boxer the old fashioned way to remain a dominant title holder.
