(NYC) - Victoria Azarenka overcame a dominant early jab and punishing long right hands from Maria Sharapova to overhaul and eventually overtake her lovely Russian rival in the semi-finals of the US Open today.
The victory confirms and upholds the verdict of the Aussie Open final - a fight in which Azarenka battered Sharapova in shockingly one-sided fashion to claim supremacy over the Russian beauty for the first time.
It was a much better effort from Sharapova this time out, but perhaps even more devastating in outcome as Vika proved able to first withstand Maria's best offensives, rally herself under duress, then slowly roll Sharapova up on all fronts.
"I am the better fighter now, I think, yes," a puffy-faced Azarenka said in answer to a Chrissy Evert interview question. "Maria is vulnerable to me - to my movement and handspeed. I'm very confident and comfortable against her now. Also I am prettier, and in better condition!" |
